I was thinking while they were in there to change spark plugs, and Throttle Body Sync? Wish I could do it myself, but I just don't feel comfortable doing the valves. I'd rather have it done right. I don’t have my manual in front of me so I don’t know exactly what the 24,000 mile service entails but the only “scheduled service” that the dealer has done was valves, TB sync and spark plugs. nhchris Posted February 1, 2020 Share Posted February 1, 2020 (edited) It's one think to check the valve clearances, but a whole nother thing to adjust them! Pulling the cam shafts out, figuring out the shimming, keeping the cam timing correct on reassembly, etc. I checked the clearances on my ST 1300, but opted not to tear it down further to do the adjust. I’m patiently waiting for the GSX S1000GT to become widely available. And waiting…… The guy I bought my FJ-09 from timed it almost perfectly; at 21,000 miles, the front tire was worn out (rear tire had been recently damaged and replaced, which I'm sure was not in his plan), the original chain and sprockets were beyond shagged, and 11 out of 12 valve clearances turned out to be out of spec. Oh well, I bought it in February and didn't have much else to do for a while anyway... The valve check and shim process is no worse than a lot of bikes, and better than many, but it is definitely not for beginners without guidance. One of the reasons I do this myself is so that I can take the necessary added time and effort to get all the clearances set to the upper end of the range. That is eye-watering, and is that what you expected for London? i have about 18,000 miles on mine just now and have arranged for a local repair shop to check and adjust the valve clearances ad the end of the riding season. Andy the owner of the shop is happy for me to strip as much off the bike as possible and then wheel the bike the two hundred yards round to his workshop. was quoted £150-£200 for valve check and adjust. Ride On Posted July 24, 2022 Share Posted July 24, 2022 For what it's worth I'd guess it's about a 3 hour job to check and adjust the valves. That's assuming you've done it before and you're proficient at it. $500 doesn't sound bad for a dealer to do it. I adjusted my valves this spring and screwed up seating the valve cover gasket. As a first timer, and about 12 hours of messing around from beginning to end, I finally got things right. I'd still do it all over again though. You mis-assigned that quote to me somehow. I sadly not only know how but am also fairly proficient at doing all my own maintenance, repairs and mods. I say sadly because while doing so I only incur the cost of parts, it saps by energy and eats into the limited discretionary time I have but I will continue working on bikes. I found a good mechanic about a one hour drive from my home. Valve clearance inspection, throttle body sync, and new sparkplugs and air filter all for 350 dollars. I supplied the parts which I bought online including all new gaskets / seals. There is nothing like spending a day riding with friends in the grip of a shared obsession.
