I didn't use tape during the install and don't notice a difference. I'm just thankful for warm hands! They work so well I had to lower the values for each setting. yamaha heated grips on the FJ09 have 2 settings....sweaty hands and complete body ignition. I had a 10deg C ride in to work the other day and the only thing warm were my hands.
