  1. After the first oil change at 1K miles there were noticeable "sparklies" in the paste that the magnet trapped. I attribute that to the break in of all of those metal parts setting themselves in against each other. The 2 changes since have contained hardly anything shiny, but a thin film of black residue forms on the end of the oil filter. About the same consistency as the black film I pull off my drain plugs magnets on the FJR.
  2. I have magnetic plugs in the oil pan and rear diff on my FJR. For the FJ-09 I have gone this route...I just swung by Northern Tool and picked up one of these. Slap it on the end of the oil filter.
  3. I have a "type 1" tensioner and had it make noise when restarting after a short shutdown in hot (+90) weather. The dealer replaced it with the revised unit that included the revised head cover bolt that enhances oil flow. We have 5K miles on it since the replacement and have had zero noise since, hot or cold. It did take them 3 days to get the parts and that was back in July when the TSB was first announced.
  4. We ordered a Corbin for the FJ-09 in anticipation of the Saddle Sore 1000 we completed this summer. Identical to the one pictured minus the backrest. We contacted Corbin and had them add a layer of softer foam. It made the seat a tad higher but my son never complained once about the seat in 16+ hours of riding. We are adding a set of Rox risers to compensate for the altered seat/bar position with the Corbin installed. The stock Corbin is significantly more firm and does sit lower. If you comfortable with the stock seat/bar position I don't think risers would be required.
  5. Scotts Performance Model S-1 You will need access to a parts cleaner and/or compressed air if you go this route to effect a thorough cleaning at oil change time. Side benefit is you get to see any signs of wear going on when you clean it up at oil change time. I have used it on my FJR's for 120+k miles. I change oil every 3.5/4K miles. At that rate and relative to the OEM and many other filters it's paid for itself many times over. Plus I get to save Mother Earth and keep all of those yucky oil laden filters out of landfills. Between the magnet in the filter and the magnet in my drain bolt I have very little of anything magnetic floating around. My drain pan is generally void of anything at my change intervals.

  7. We went with Yamalube 10-40 non-syn for the first 1,800 miles. We have since moved on to Mobil 1 10-40 motorcycle specific synthetic. Side benefit has been the disappearance of the black spots on the exhaust. I use the same in my FJR...both bikes will be on it from now on.
  8. I have a type 1 style tensioner in mine. With 1800 miles on the bike I would get some cam chain noise when the motor was heat sinked in high temps(ie air temps in the 90s and water temps in the 200's.) I could pull over for a few minutes, restart and get a subtle cam chain rattle. A few revs and moving down the road and cool down the bike and it would go away. I ended up having the dealer replace. No more noise.
  9. I am getting the revised part next Tuesday...intermittent noise at 1600 miles on a 2015. We shall see what the revised does to the noise...
  10. Actually we have addressed this issue. The solution is to insert bushings on the upper mount bolts to spread the upper mounts. Never seen it solved with a grinder but cant wait for pics of your solution. There are many ways to skin the cat.
  11. Ummm...you forgot to buy this and the bags are flapping around at the bottom???

  13. If you're real price conscious then keep an eye on eBay and Craigslist(I suggest you pack heat when going to pick them up!...Just kidding!) I scored my FJR bags locally off craigslist. The lids are not too hard to paint if you want something else. The Yamaha spears come off on the newer ones and your favorite paint color can be had at the local auto parts store.

  16. highplainsrider, here are the two logos, YAMAHA Musical Instruments, You want this, Yamaha Motors... The YAMAHA part should be an easy fix...for the logo using just a single color perhaps you can make little cutouts where the forks overlap the circle so the matte peeks through. Would be easier on a red bike...but worth a try on yours. I am not sure how fine the vinyl cutters can cut, maybe it can do something this small???
  17. nice work highplains...but...I need to inform you that you just installed the Yamaha Musical Instruments logo on your FJ. The Yamaha Motors logo has the points of the tuning fork crossing the boundary of the circle. The Musical Instruments logo is the one you chose, the tuning fork completely contained inside the circle. Also, the letter M in the word YAMAHA has the center point stopping short of the two legs. The Motor logo font uses a symmetrical font and the center point touches down even with the legs. (rofl)
  18. Have you had a chance to ride with the GPS in that position yet? How are the vibrations through the mount to the GPS? I only ask because I killed a Garmin Zumo by mounting it on a reservoir cover on my FJR. I could feel the high speed vibes through it on the road. I should have known better. I moved the mount base to my Mottorad Riser when I got my replacement. There are noticeably fewer and less intense vibrations in that location. If the vibes are not bad in that location I think you solved my question as to where I am going to mount my GPS on the FJ.
  19. My Arai Vector 2 with a Sena20S mounted to it fits nicely in my FJR bag on a daily basis.
