  1. I am an Instructor with Team-Oregon.org. Been teaching for 17 years. We offer several advanced classes in addition to the beginner and intermediate classes all throughout the state of Oregon. https://team-oregon.org The advanced course can be fond here. https://team-oregon.org/training-courses/additional-training/ They are a real hoot!
  2. Not worried so much with MPG but to reduce RPM's at highway speeds on IBA LD rides. But to answer your question. My last set up was a 17T/43T (2.53 ratio) and on a SS5000 Five States in-state ride last summer I averaged 43.4 mpg. The 17T/43T was a little too low and sluggish, so I upped it to the 16T/43 = 2.6875. I'll probably change it up again in another 20,000 + or whenever I need to. The last DID chain lasted almost 22,000 before starting to kink.
  3. New Chain and sprockets from Sprocket Center. EK 525 Red 16T front, 43T rear. Looking for lower highway rpms. Stock 15T/45T = 3.00 ratio. 16T/43 = 2.6875 ratio or 89.58% which translates to 10.42% lower highway rpm's. Sure it will not be "spunky" off the rails, but I'm a LD rider, not a hooligan. Well maybe sometimes......... And yes the bike needs a good washing! Hey I ride even in the winter!
  4. What the hell are Cornering lights? On my 2016 FJ09 I replaced my rear turn signals with front turn/running lights. The fronts are both running and turn signals. Now the rear does the same thing. Easy to do. Just run a jumper from the running light wires to the license plate light (always on with ignition). Technically per DOT rules you cannot have amber lights on the rear of the vehicle. But I've never been stopped and cited for this and I have done this on every bike I've owned since 1979. Additionally I fully agree that every bike needs three lights on in the front. I have a set of 10w LED's as DRL's in addition to Denalis for night use as well as retroreflective panels all over the bike. Front sides and rear. I would not recommend running your high beams on all the time as you piss off everyone, it is illegal in town and it is harder to get someones attention by what dimming your lights? Conspicuity is the name of the game. See and BE SEEN!
  5. Nice work! Your design might be the mount I use for a larger plumbed in fuel cell.
  6. I'm going to be the Naysayer here. They are all snake oil and a waste of money. Hiss! Hiss! Everyone with an opinion otherwise is guaranteed to chime in with anecdotal information. "Hey I survived a grizzly attack with a .22 pistol!. Shot my buddy in the knee and ran away! HA!!!" Riding your bike regularly does more to keep your fuel system clean than anything else. If you're going to leave it unridden for more than a couple weeks or longer (who the hell does that! ) well then maybe, just maybe a fuel stabilizer. But, naw, snake oil the lot of them!. Now where the heck is my gremlin bell????
  7. Four months waiting for my certification AND! Two days ago I received the acknowledgment from the IBA on the SS5000. Actual Certificate to follow! IBA Ride Certification - Database update confirmation Congratulations on a great ride. This note is to confirm that your ride has been approved and updated in the IBA's ride database. SaddleSore 5000 (#15041) 06-Jun-2023 5,291miles (US) Yamaha FJ-09 Michael Kneebone Iron Butt Association President
  8. New Shoes for Baby. Michelin Road 6 this time front and back. Shoe my own with the old tried and true HF stand. Static balancer as well.
  9. Yes resolved. Replace your radiator cap. Fixed my issue.
  10. Damn! I attended the final Banquet! Used to be a COGGER.
  11. I cannot agree more! Take The Aufderheide and Hwy 242 in Western Oregon come to mind as both incredible roads. Better views, better terrain changes, much less traffic and weekend warriors. The secondary county Roads in Douglas County are unbelievably good. The Alsea Hwy from 99W north of Monroe to Hwy 34 near Mary's Peak then all the way to the coast. Fantastic! Hwy 20, Hwy 6. You name it! All blow the east coast roads and I haven't even left the western Coastal Range and Cascade Roads. Hwy 395, 7, ....... never enough time!
  12. Anyone who has ridden in southern Lane county and Northern Douglas county knows there are tons of great back roads. My route today starts on Lorraine Hwy to Territorial. South to Hwy 38, through Drain left on Hwy 138 to Type Rd. Then to Fort McKay then Melqua south to Melrose, Coos Bay wagon Rd, Looking glass into Winston on Hwy 42, Then Roberts Creek Rd to Dixon Creek, back on Hwy 138 for a short run west to North Creek Rd. Then Hwy 99 through Sutherland to Oakland then Elkhead Rd with a brief stop at Mildred Kanapie Park (peacocks roam the grounds) to Anlauf Rd to Boswell back to Drain then Territorial, Lorraine Hwy back home. Great Ride about 230 miles round trip Home to home. The entire trip we never touched I-5. Map isn't perfect. But close. https://goo.gl/maps/rLKqQb3GugZ3CQAF9
  13. Made the ride. 5 days 5 states 1000+ miles each state all under 24 hours each. Total of 5420 miles. From my home door to door seven days 6100+ miles. Paperwork is in for IBA certifications. Hail storm in Idaho, Deer in Nevada, thunderstorms in Nevada, Idaho and Utah. Temps from 30 degrees in Kanab Utah and 96 in Needles CA. Pic's below are start in Yreka, CA and end in McDermitt NV. My riding buddy, Woody is 76 years old and kicked ass! We really didn't have time for pictures, but here's a couple. Once off the interstate the country was freaking incredibly beautiful! Ave price per gallon $4.504 high of almost $7.00 in Needles , CA and lowest price of just over $4.00 in Arizona. A spirited pace yielded Average MPG 39.515 and total gas was $562.45. Spent about 4-6 hours sleep at each stop/start hotel. We could have just rode the interstates but decided to make it more of a challenge and utilized as many State routes as possible.
  14. Finally got rid of the fender by installing a motodynamic license plate holder and the integrated tail light. Lights and plate holder off, On and Brakes on Turn signals are sequential and brakes do a double flash. Above is a LED light strip for parking lights and brakes (not MotorDynamic). Looks better than the stock. Should have done it years ago.
  15. 4.8 gallons of gas total in my 2016 FJ09. Reserve light and count up mile indicator comes on when it hits .8 gallons left. Best mileage I've had with normal riding was 192 miles on 4.3 gallons. 44.65 mpg. Which would translate to 214 miles to completely dry. On my IBA rides I usually bring an extra 60 oz gas in two large MSR fuel bottles. Still haven't got the time to install an auxiliary fuel cell. Yamaha could have easily placed a 5.5-6.0 gallon tank on the bike. 250 mile range would be perfect for the "western states edition". :)!
  16. Planning on Running a IBA In-State Saddlesore 5000 the week after next. Five states leaving from Oregon and riding through California, Arizona, Utah, Idaho and Nevada then returning back home. Each state 1000 miles inside the state within 24 hours, five times in a row. Total trip with start and finish miles is slightly over 5800 miles in a total of seven days. Already did a In-State SS1000 Oregon a BBG1500 Oregon. A BBG1500 Montana and a SS2000 on my 2016 FJ09 as well as dozens of other IBA and endurance rallies on my old 2001 Concours ZG1000. I'll have my spot tracker on and try to link it to the forum for anyone wanting to see our progress. Longest Ride between gas stations is 187 miles and longest planned day is 17 hours of riding with the assumption of good traffic, weather and no major construction delays. Using the interstates but most of the ride will be on state highways. Hoping for 6 hours hotel sleep in-between rides. Bike has New PR5's on the bike and plan on early morning starts to minimize dark hours riding to 2-3 hours max. Bike set up with McCruise control, RTIC gallon water jug, highway lights, highway pegs, custom saddle, Cardo headset, Spot Tracker, Garmin Zumo, Countdown timer, Camera and phone holder. Also have analog maps in case the electronics go fubar. Saddle bags and tail trunk with cooler attached to the back seat. Riding with a experienced LD buddy who is riding a similarly outfitted Concours 1300. Wish us luck! (psst. Luck favors the prepared). Updates to follow.
  17. Unless you used a torch to cut it off the answer is no. Get the Mazda plug as Ziggy stated along with a new crush washer. If that fails you can try some high temp teflon tape.
  18. Being a cheap ass I couldn't justify the Akra or Yoshi systems, so I went Delkevic. About half the price. CF can with full system under $500.00 out the door, you lighten the load as yes the stock is a beast and gets exceptional hot AND you retain the center stand. Do not buy the 9" can unless you want to go deaf! Don't ask how I know! https://delkevic.com/full-system-to-fit-fj-09-2015-2017-tracer-900-2019-2020-with-stubby-14-carbon-fiber-oval-muffler-and-stainless-steel-downpipes/
  19. One piece Stich. I can never forget to wear my pants!
  20. I picked a narrower Rizoma bar for my 2016 FJ IIRC I used the MA009 model. https://www.rizoma.com/en/ma_tapered.html?cat=52
  21. Locks are designed to keep honest people honest and the thieves moving to an easier target. than being said I do carry the latest version of the Kryptonite disk lock and a their short thick wire cable. Mostly a show of strength. Anyone with a diamond bladed battery powered angle grinder can cut through these in about two minutes. But thieves are mostly creatures of convenience and would be harder pressed into spending the time and making that much noise for a cheap assed FJ09 or Tracer. Harleys, Ducati's Beemers, wings, hyper sports bikes and custom. That's more in their wheelhouse.
  22. I ruined a aerostich liner by washing it in a machine on normal. Pissed me off as they aren't cheap. I loved it but they are now way too expensive to replace.
  23. I would think so, but I don't have the time to research.
