  1. One of the features of motorcycle specific gloves is some form of wrist closure to secure the glove on your hand. If the glove slides off your hand too easily it might come off in a crash - and we are back to the unprotected hand situation. All of the work gloves I've seen (Hopot, Lowe's, etc.) slide off too easily!
  2. I think I'm missing something here. I sympathize with the OP and his travails with Yammaha. I'm sure we have all, at one time or another run into a situation that's similar - a mechanical item breaks down shortly after the warranty expires and before we would normally expect said problems. There has been a LOT of talk (especially early on) about 'did you check your valve clearances'. It has always been my understanding that insufficient clearance in the exhaust valve train can lead to burned valves because they do not stay in contact with the head long enough for heat to be conducted away. Too much clearance does not lead to excessive pounding of the valve against the head, it simply does not open the valve enough for proper breathing and power suffers. (Again, this has been my understanding. Correct me if I'm wrong.) Checking and adjusting the valve train would not have prevented wear in the valve guides, nor would it have affected the valve seats. From where I stand, I think this cylinder head had improperly heat treated valve seats and poorly machined valve guides (maybe a stack up of tolerances?). In other words, I don't think there was much the OP could have done during his ownership of the bike to prevent this - any more than I could have done something to prevent the failure of my steering box on my Econoline van (Service Manager, "We never see these things fail...they are bulletproof") shortly after the warranty expired.
  3. Hi, I'm currently in love with my Honda - but she is too big and heavy for me (unless we are moving at anything over a few mph). But, as I get older, sooner or later I will have to downsize a bit. I ride with a BMW club, swap lies with Guzzistas, and really enjoy the STOC crowd. I have a '77 T3 that I want to get back on the road this summer, and I just put a Shorai battery in my ST1300, replacing the Yuasa AGM. The ST is my primary ride. This summer I've been to a Guzzi Rally, an STOC event, and will be going to the RA rally in Pennsylvania in July, as well as our BMW club's weekly rides and other events. Hopefully I can learn from all you guys about the FJ so I don't end up with a bike that doesn't fit my needs. I'm the sort of fellow who likes to research something before I jump in - unpleasant surprises are exactly that - and unwelcome to boot. What am I looking for here? What are the maintenance 'issues' the FJ is known to have?; What are the accessories everyone adds?; What is involved in servicing the bike?*; What aftermarket accessories are available? I expect to search the threads and toss in my .02, ask questions and enjoy the conversation.
