Passenger Size/ Weight

Recommended Posts

I did a search and couldn't find any relevant info on here discussing this situation so I thought I would throw it out there. It's an issue I come across now and again and it's a grey area problem with no elegant solution. So let's say that a lady (could be a guy) is interested in taking a ride with you as a passenger. They seem calm enough to handle being a passenger and maybe they even have some riding experience BUT they are a bit *heavier* than you feel comfortable with. They could be very tall or wide or a combination of both. You feel that the weight of this passenger would cause some dangerous instability to the bike in whatever way you can imagine. The stock suspension would be one good reason. Now it's a given that you decline to give this person a ride for safety reasons, but what clever ways have you come up with to convey this to the other person? What passenger attributes cause a no-go for you?

The Tracer/FJ-09 isn't a good 2 up bike nor is/was it intended or designed to be a good 2 up machine IMHO. My wife is a petite little thing, and she isn't comfortable on it at all, plus overall these are a pretty damn small bike compared to most.

I appreciate your comment and it's a good point. This is the biggest bike (size and cc) I've owned so I don't have any other perspective as far as bigger bikes for passengers. Maybe down the road I will buy an FJR when I get bored with this one then I know for sure passengers won't be a problem!

Take them on a short ride and cruise, don't rail. Slow way down for rough roads both for their comfort and to protect the oil drain bolt (for those of us with 2015s). If they want to tour, trailer to the fun road.

Not sure how big the passenger is, but I've been the reluctant passenger on my buddy's R6 when a previous bike had a mechanical with no other transportation option available. We got home ok. If an R6 can handle 350# of rider and passenger...

These certainly are not boring bikes, but yes the FJR is a fabulous 2 up mile eating cruise missile.

My suggestion on how to respond would be..........

"I'm really sorry, but my current motorcycle is not really ideal for riding two-up and I don't have much experience riding with a passenger. I don't want to risk you getting hurt, but if you are really interested in learning to ride, here is what I would recommend........"
