The 21 has bigger axles and nuts. When shopping for a tyre machine I noticed that pre-21 have smaller axles than almost any other bike. So much so that you have to buy extra adapters or you can not use the machine.

Could it be that Yamaha engineers want more torque on undersized parts.

I have some upcoming spring maintenance & mods including the chain slack, so I appreciate the earlier comments including the 77 ft/lbs. 

What's the axle nut size for the '21-22? I remember reading 32mm- same as earlier models?

15~20 axle nut was 27 mm, tq 108 & slack 15 mm.

I went with the LighTech Chicom clone adjusters* (1/4 the $ & still work well after 5 years), tq to 82 "# with 1.375" slack.

I adjust slack on the left and align with the right checking with a MP sprocket clamp / rod tool (with a replacement rod I cut double+ length)*** & a vernier caliper, and then pretension using a MP sprocket jamb tool^ and a much less expensive clone of the Chain Monkey chain tensioner** (a screwdriver & rag is a so-so substitute) .
