Fuel reserve light comes on with half a tank left?

I've stopped filling the tank to the brim and now follow the book with my new Tracer 9.

So I got "127 km trip1" / "9 liter fuel consumed" and the reserve light starts blinking. 

When I fill up (after riding 15km on reserve), it's exactly 9 liters. So great, the fuel consumption is more precisely calculated on the 9 than the 900 but it's even more weird to me. I don't mind that one-bar-half-tank thing but it's a nuisance that I'm hitting reserve with half a tank left.

If I can only fill 9 liters and the manual states that the tank is 18 liters and you should stop filling when the fuel reaches to bottom of the filler tube that means that I should still have 9 liters in there when the reserve light comes on.

I did ride the 900 empty once and I could only do 50 km on reserve so that does't make sense unless something changed drastically on the 9.

The fuel level sender is wonky but I'm not familiar with the T9.
