XR 1200 - Thoughts from the masses?

You don't have the Powervision module itself then, I'm guessing? 

I don’t have the Powervision programmer, and the Target-tune seemed to be running pretty rich, so I temporarily removed it and put the stock narrow-band sensors back in.   It’s running so well now, I’m tempted to just leave it alone.  

It’s a weird guilty pleasure to ride this thing:  There is no rational explanation for what makes it so fun…

" ...Weird guilty pleasure...." , there is something about a big airhead V-twin pushing all that heavy metal around, dunno, someone else called it visceral. To me it's a far more primordial feeling experience than any of my Japanese bikes- although I pick them more often then not to go ride. But I'll never part with my Dyna, not near as nice looking, it's garage built, as your XR ; that is a good looking scoot🖕 ( a truly rational person would never risk life & limb for the mere pleasure of zipping around on two wheels....)

Almost bought one of these when they first came out. Actually went to the dealer with a grand for a deposit. Didnt have one in stock and couldn't tell me when they would get one ,so didnt take my deposit. I wanted a sporty Harley and finally thought this was it . I liked the Buels. but never pulled the trigger. Would like to have one ,like you just for the different riding experience !           MIKE

Quick update:  After a couple of months and a few hundred miles, I’m really happy I bought this garden tractor…

It is 100% functionally inferior to the FJ, the Speed Twin, a mid-1970s CB750, etc… and I couldn’t care less.  😀

It is just silly, stupid fun to ride.  I definitely wouldn’t want it as my only bike, but it has fit beautifully into the three bike rotation so far.

I had a ‘14 Triumph Thruxton for a few years that didn’t handle particularly well, wasn’t very fast, wasn’t exactly comfortable, wasn’t real smooth, wasn’t even real good on gas but with (budget) upgraded suspension and a TTP Stage 1 setup with TOR pipes was one of the few bikes I’ve owned I truly regret selling.
 

Something about riding it was so raw, so pure, so just agricultural in nature it always made the ride a real experience like nothing else. There’s a vibe to it you don’t get from “modern” machines.

I don't have one of these beasts, but the pleasure of riding it y'all are describing makes me think of how I feel about my 24 year old SV650. 

I have to admit that I was one of those that really wanted the XR1200 when it came out, but I had just committed to another bike, and with the economy downturn in place I couldn't justify it. Maybe when I retire and have more time for my rotation I'll add it to the stable.

And so it came to pass, after I became so confident of my new XR’s reliability, that I decided to take an extended ride…  

One ride of 100+ miles, and one mechanical failure.   😀   (Hey, it’s just teething pains when sorting out a 14 year old motorcycle, right?) 

A clutch cable decided it was no longer in the mood to participate in the fun, leaving me about 120 miles from home, and pondering what to do about my predicament.   But momma didn’t raise no quitter, so I decided to just ride it home… I mean, who really NEEDS a clutch anyway?   For future reference:  It is impossible to find neutral in a Harley gearbox without a clutch, with the engine running.   

I plotted a route home that tried to minimize the need to come to a full stop, but there were still several times when it was unavoidable:  Slowly roll to a near stop in first gear, thumb the kill switch to shut off the motor, find neutral with a dead engine, restart, then ‘paddle and stomp’ when it was time to get rolling again.   Not elegant, but I made it home intact.

There were a couple of I’ll just low-speed cruise the parking lot moments when I mistimed the lights, but stubbornly refused to quit rolling… good times!  🤘

In the H-D’s defense, my FJ did exactly the same thing to me once before, so… 🤷‍♂️

Glad you were able to make it back safely and without needing to call for a tow.  It could have been a completely different story if you got stuck in Friday afternoon stop and go traffic.

I got REALLY lucky, honestly.  Even though it happened a long way from home, I was able to come up with a route that didn’t require many stops.  If it were in the city, with traffic, I never would have attempted to nurse it back home.

Take a good look at your throttle cables they tend to also get over looked at maintenance time and can trap water.
