greg
The fuse is okay. Any ideas?
Premium Member jimf Posted June 8, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted June 8, 2015 Did you replace the fuse or just visually inspect it? I've had 'em blow and not be able to see it at all. Nearly froze myself to death in 17F weather once before I figured that out. Other than that, there's a relay in the circuit somewhere since it's off if the bike is off. I'd look for that and test or replace it. If it's neither of those things you're probably looking at a wire continuity problem, time to break out the multimeter. 2015 FJ-09 (Mary Kate) 2007 Daytona 675 (Tabitha, ret.) 1998 Vulcan 800 (Ret.) 2001 SV650S (Veronica, Ret.) 2000 Intruder 800 (Ret.) greg
I did replace the fuse to no avail. I guess I will have to take the bike to the dealer and repair under warranty. Was hoping it's a minor thing I could fix myself.
graat
which fuse did you check? I checked some fuses at my Mt-09 tracer and the fuse for the 12V socket was teminal fuse 1. Auxiliary fuse 1 and 2 are connected to te unused extra connectors behind the windscreen.
2wheeldynoworks
If the adapter you used to plug into the socket has had recent contact with water it could have shorted out as well. Be glad it happened under warranty, and not the day after it expired

I will check Terminal fuse 1 and report back!
greg
Lo and behold it was terminal fuse 1. Thanks!
squidproquo
Why oh why do they wire the socket up with skinny wires and a 2 amp fuse? People use those things to pump up tires. Doing so on the Fj means an instant blown fuse.

Doing so on the Fj means an instant blown fuse.I run a SAE, Battery Tender, cable directly off my battery. Some or most of the pumps out have SAE cables included. I do think the power outlet should at least handle 5 amps which is a good charge for most cell phone and GPS devices. Isn't that what Yamaha designed this outlet for? If it only handles 2 amp loads, then IMO it's under designed. I've always carried a few power adapters with me when I'm out a ways. SAE to USB is a good one, SAE extension so electronics can be charging in the tank bag while GPS is in the power outlet or whatever, cig lighter to USB of course, and a few others. Doing so on the Fj means an instant blown fuse. Because they didn't design it to handle bigger loads. They don't want you to hook up a pump or larger draw device to that socket. If you want to run a pump from a 12v socket you'll need to install, wire, and relay it correctly yourself. Sorry dude. -skip

After reading this and like complaints, this is what I went to: http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Wiring_Kits/Fuseboxes/PC-8/pc-8.html#30akit Jim Davis, the owner of the company is working on a kit specifically for the FJ-09. I always buy one of his wiring kits for my motorcycles just to get around the wimpy circuits the manufacturers seem to supply us with. http://imgur.com/AttpXy8 http://imgur.com/zCJrvmc http://imgur.com/IKGn4Rg http://imgur.com/zCJrvmc http://imgur.com/IKGn4Rg -skip

squidproquo
Um yeah, the question is why wouldnt they design a socket to handle loads typical of the desired use of a socket on a motorcycle. Tires need air. Pumps need 10-15 amps. Like say, this would provide: http://www.powerwerx.com/fuses-circuit-protection/cigarette-lighter-socket-fused-bare.html My 2006 Sh*tbox has one.
