Alaska Hwy and the Stewart/Cassiar

Did a little tour with the goal of Telegraph Creek B.C. The road into Telegraph Creek can be very difficult in bad weather, it is dirt, narrow and in places very steep. When we got to Dease Lake it had been raining for 36 hour so we decided not to go in to Telegraph Creek. The trip ended up being 1400km over three days. We had everything from torrential rain to blue sky and sun. The Stewart/Cassiar Hwy was very rough, broken chip seal with awesome views through the Cassiar Mountains.

I also like it, I plan on doing an alaska trip next June- any pointers as far as bike go? Is there enough mud/gravel protection in the rear or is that something I should invest in? I see you have a small front fender extender but is that enough? K

I'm envious, this looks awesome and I think the aggressive tread looks awesome on the bike as well.  I would love to do something ilke that someday, just need to find someone else crazy enough to ride with me.  I've ridden some rough rodes in the backcountry around here in PA, but nothing quite like that (no mud yet).

Keep riding and taking pics please, I will continue to live vicariously on my paved roads.

Are those Ortlieb bags? What type of support are you using? They appear to be the sort of system I am considering. Soft bags would seem to be a way of keeping the weight down and avoid handling issues. It looks like it was an adventure, just what we all seek.

I traded a 2012 Super Tenere for the FJ and am really short so knew I didn't want a KTM.

I have a D&G Racing hugger which seems to keep the rear fairly clean and the bags are Wolfman Expedition http://wolfmanluggage.com/collections/expedition-bags I built my own racks to hang them on out of 5mm aluminum plate. I had these bags on my Super Tenere and I really like them.

we didn't stop much to take pictures.

Did that ride in 2012 on my DL1000 V Strom. Camped at Dease Lake also. Started out solo from a rally in The Dalles, Oregon, up through Couer D'Laine Idaho, and on north up through British Columbia and over to the Cassiar Highway. Then on up to Fairbanks and the Arctic Circle. Ran into a couple of youngsters in Stuart, BC who were from Vancouver, and headed the same way I was, so we rode together. I really enjoyed their company and the ride. Would do it again in a heartbeat....if my wife would let me....sigh.... Here's my website for anyone interested, I took a few pics.  www.philsplace.smugmug.com
