deersSlayer
Some pics and a few words from my trip from Ottawa, ON to The Maritimes, and back via the USA. Began with short day (200 km) that included a long visit with my 92 year old aunt in small Huberdeau, QC. Stayed at a nice B&B near the Mt Tremblant ski resort. There are 60 B&Bs in the area! Next day was all back roads to a small resort hotel just outside Quebec City. Had to stop for a large moose blocking hwy 347. Parc national de la Mauricie was a great road! View of the small lake from hotel: http://i.imgur.com/R2Q7LsS.jpg No pics during the next day as I successfully stayed ahead of rain chasing me. Most of the day was on hwy 138 along the North shore of the Fleuve Saint Laurent, but hwy 362 from Baie-Saint-Paul to La Malbaie was good. Had a very good 'brunch' at a diner in a small town on the water. Friendly town, most of the locals in the diner asked me about my trip. My French speaking was coming back to me! Started raining 10 minutes before I got to the ferry terminal 3 hours early. http://i.imgur.com/2SHTROh.jpg It was raining hard when I got off the ferry, but my excellent B&B (Auberge Bruine Océane) was only 3 km from the terminal. No pics on Tuesday. It was wet, and I made a really stupid 3-fault routing error that added 155 km. 785 km day. Stayed at a reasonable motel newly remodeled, the first one after the bridge onto Prince Edward Island. Wednesday was short, 350. My mom grew up in PEI, we visited every summer when I was a kid. I didn't recognize her old house, I was last there 40 years ago! I remember I loved going to Cavendish Beach (in the distance in this pic.) http://i.imgur.com/DoM3bOO.jpg North Rustico, 10 minutes from my mom's house. Went deep sea fishing from there when I was about 8. http://i.imgur.com/xvOgk8A.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/kKKoQIn.jpg Left PEI the next day, 1 day earlier than planned, to catch dry weather on the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton. Took this pic on the ferry right after another rider told me "we have a saying in Newfoundland for weather like this : we're gonna pay for this!" http://i.imgur.com/EyzCvsm.jpg Lunch stop on Cape Breton at the Glenora Inn Distillery, with live music: http://i.imgur.com/CbqzJVK.jpg Had a dry run through the very twisty sections on the West section of the Cabot Trail, very nice ride. It was going to rain that night, so I upgraded to a cabin at the Dingwall campground: http://i.imgur.com/0Fpszq4.jpg It had a nice view, that's ocean 'under' the cloud/fog: http://i.imgur.com/zwzrlVn.jpg Friday was very nice as I did the excellent east side of the Cape Breton trail. Stayed along the water from Sidney onward. This pic is at a pullout for the locals' super-mailbox: http://i.imgur.com/2NNUWfG.jpg Stayed 2 nights at a cheap clean motel outside St Peters Cape Breton as it would rain hard most of Saturday (08:00 - 15:00). From my room, the lake view is fogged in: http://i.imgur.com/25TlxXn.jpg Nice ride on Sunday over mostly very good back roads, including 170 km along the ocean on # 7. One 20 km dirt/gravel back road was slow going, but it saved 35 km. Probably didn't save any time! I camped that night at Graves Island Provincial campground, a very nice spot. http://i.imgur.com/io6wLPk.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/63jK4N2.jpg It had a nice trail around the island/campground, about 4 km long. Obviously lots of water views on that hike. http://i.imgur.com/uocPUMy.jpg Took my time the next day, a short ride to the Digby fery (to St John, NB.) Stopped at an excellent restaurant along the way. http://i.imgur.com/BLIEBvn.jpg Another diner at the restaurant was a Neal Young impersonator. Very good singer and guitar player. I said the only problem was he was always on key! http://i.imgur.com/Xlrjd6F.jpg Ferry to St John, NB: http://i.imgur.com/AntwHiS.jpg Where's the motorcyclists only lounge? http://i.imgur.com/GE6SqbD.jpg Had a very long day Tuesday. 880 km with lots of rain, no pics. I cut through the USA for a more direct route home, but still all on back roads. Back tire when I got home, with 7,709 km total: http://i.imgur.com/mOYVAZa.jpg Down to the center wear bars, and an unexpected rough gravel road and rough construction roughed up the tire in several spots. New back tires goes on this Tuesday. [span]5 provinces, 4 states, 4 ferry rides, total trip distance 4,967 km.[/span]Animals on the road as I approached them: 1 moose, 7 or 8 deer, 1 fox (a big one!), 1 porcupine, and about 2 dozen rabbits! http://i.imgur.com/5T1JhN2.jpg Bike performed perfectly! 8-) FJ-09, 690 Enduro R. sulfurmdk
Very cool! I'm looking at doing my first long distance trip this summer and I have a buddy being posted to Gagetown, NB in the summer and he wants to do a tour of NS/ PEI / Nfld. I'd be leaving from the Petawawa, ON which will add a few days to my trip but all in all I think it'll be a great ride! However I have another buddy that will most likely be posted out of BC next year and this would be my 'last' opportunity to ride Vancouver to Alaska or Vancouver to California (I'd have to ship my bike out there in order to make it fit with my summer leave period). This trip would be considerably more expensive. Renting a bike is so expensive

I think Wessie and Johan do that when they go to Europe via the Chunnel, thought it mike work for you also.

If I was going to ride up to Alaska I'd buy a well sorted used KLR, then sell it after the trip. Then you could explore some really questionable gravel roads too. FJ-09, 690 Enduro R. Back Roads. deersSlayer
I'm probably going to the Maritimes again this June. Only taking a week this time, so I'll trailer my bike (and maybe a friend's weeStrom 650 too) to near Rivière-du-Loup, and start riding from there. 7 days on 2 wheels. I'll follow up in this thread. hammer
Did some of the same roads a few years ago, and I think we are going back out East this year. What are the specs on your tail pack you're using? Cheers!

What are the specs on your tail pack you're using? The dry bag is a Mosko Moto Scout 30 ltr. http://www.moskomoto.com/collections/moto-camping-luggage The saddle bags are RKA, and starting to show wear after about 35,000 km of trips. http://www.rka-luggage.com/A05%20Saddlebags/50/sb50.html This year I'll instead use my Mosko Moto Reckless 80 adventure 3 dry bag system. I bought the MM R80 for my KTM 690 Enduro, but if fits well on the FJ-09. I may use the Scout 30 for the top bag in the R80. FJ-09, 690 Enduro R. Back Roads. Period. sulfurmdk
I agree, I did some more research and the roads seem to be 'questionable' with construction and whatnot. I think Alaska is out of the question with my bike for now.
