fjay09
I'm going to build some side supports for my Cortech soft bags tonight I'll post a pic when I'm done. I kind of like the way you can remove the Yamaha soft bag supports so I might make something like that. But once I start using these bags I may never take them off unless I wash the bike. Those 1/4" aluminum L-brackets I referenced earlier in this thread take about 2 minutes to install or remove. Two Allen head bolts per side, and uses the stock Yamaha spacers. I only have them on for trips. They are very solidly mounted, tested over 6,500 km with full RKA soft bags, including some very bumpy roads with BIG frost heaves. I know the bags bounce/move a bit because much of the black paint wore off, but the bags never got near the rear tire. FJ-09, 690 Enduro R. Back Roads. Period. fjay09
I picked up some 3/8 round bar after work. I like fabricating so a little bit of cutting, welding and bending I'll see what I can come up with. I have a few ideas

I cant even see how your bags are staying attached! Looks really nice. Those nylon spacers picked up at Lowes as well? **Also Order, why nylon vs aluminum?**
fjay09
Here what I came up with real quick. Bent the round bar to match the contour of the bottom of my bags. I will have it finished tomorrow.

I cant even see how your bags are staying attached! Looks really nice. Those nylon spacers picked up at Lowes as well? **Also Order, why nylon vs aluminum?** Thanks! You know what? I forgot - those ARE the factory spacers from the hard luggage bracket. I used nylon ones on my homemade tail tidy. No reason why nylon wouldn't have worked equally as well, though. Just ran a slightly longer bolt in from the bag (punched holes in the bag) through a washer inside and out (painted black on the outside), through the bracket, through the spacer, and into the stock mounting holes from the factory bracket. Held the rear brackets in place at the angle as I tightened so they wouldn't hang below the bag - aesthetics are important, ya know Gave a little tug on the brackets to bend them out slightly, and voila! Nothin' to it. Once it had been on there awhile and I trusted the setup, I cut off the velcro straps that would normally go across the seat - couldn't stand that look, and I like the security of knowing it's harder to remove these bags than to just lift them off the bike. Added bonus: you can't see it in these pics, but I ran a lightning cable through some ¼" tubing from a USB adapter (made by Battery Tender) under the seat, down through the hole at the tail section mounting spot, punched another hole in the left hand bag, and now I have a bag-mounted iPhone charger in there, too. It's kind of superfluous now that I have my RAM X-mount up front for GPS on my phone (plugged into the power port up there), but I've been known to charge friends' dead phones in the bag while we're out on a ride. The only 'problem' I have is that I want bigger bags now, and I'll have to re-measure and poke holes and mount all over again. s e t h 2015 FJ-09 (The Me Bike) - CalSci, RAM, Shad, Givi, CrampBuster, Grip Puppies, GoPro, my custom Garage Door Opener Mod 2014 Valkyrie (The We Bike) - Too much to list, and no one on this forum cares anyway

See, I have neither the tools or experience to be this fancy. I'm much better at MacGyver-ing it by scrounging around my garage and Lowes. s e t h 2015 FJ-09 (The Me Bike) - CalSci, RAM, Shad, Givi, CrampBuster, Grip Puppies, GoPro, my custom Garage Door Opener Mod 2014 Valkyrie (The We Bike) - Too much to list, and no one on this forum cares anyway
troll
I made some bag supports specifically to fit my Wolfman Expedition Dry saddlebags. I made them pretty heavy duty as I ride rough roads and will be setting them up to carry rotopacks for gas, one can on each side. I built them out of 5mm aluminum plate and they bolt with longer bolts through spacers to/through the stock bag mounts. They also bolt to the pillion foot peg supports. I put a very light bend in them to make them flare out from the bike. I have ridden them with full bags for 3600km with over 400km of very rough gravel roads without any issues. I am very happy with the design and will clean them up a bit by trimming the edges some and general shaping. http://i.imgur.com/gaD2R99.jpg http://i.imgur.com/UM8akUU.jpg http://i.imgur.com/CQ9kKGq.jpg Coming to you from the frozen wastelands of the barren north
