I always thought the specs for play in the chain seemed a little too tight.
Might be interesting to see what the Forum consensus is on the amount of play riders are using and if any adverse effects have been noticed.

There's plenty of posts on this.  I seem to recall seeing that page linked here before but cannot confirm.  I'm pretty sure it's at lease been discussed here.  After following the link below, I see it has been discussed.
Please see the following link to get the current forum consensus on the chain spec: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=site%3Afj-09.org+chain

Yeah, I've seen some discussion of it awhile back. Just wanted to put the link to the article out there because it was published August 21st.

I've seen a couple people on here post about concern on the chain slack and I have a tendency to think Yamaha's spec in the manual is much too tight. I thought I'd pass this along, food for thought!http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/how-tight-should-chain-be-new-bike-tech-tips-answers?src=SOC&dom=fb

I agree. The chain seems too tight to me. I don't see the benefit. I think it could contribute to the harsh suspension too by limiting swing arm travel. I am going to loosen mine... at least a little bit.
Pistons or pedals, 2 wheels are where it's at...

10 hours apart. I think these threads should be merged. It's kinda confusing having the 2 with the exact same name linking to the exact same article. Mods? Agree?

It's amazing how 2 different Yamaha bike can be on this chain slack discussion. I do not like the manuals spec of 5-15mm on the FJ-09, I think it is too tight. On the other hand my wife has an FZ-07. It calls for 51-55.8mm which seems too slack.
