A Matchless G80 500 single kick start lever will BREAK your right shin bone!

That's why the "Trials" guys wore heavy knee high dirt boots with an aluminum shin plate riveted on.

Being a road guy I wore classic American tall shaft black steel toed Engineer boots with the useless little instep strap and buckle. A soccer (football to you) shin guard shoved down inside the front of the right boot along with a couple packs of Trojans was wise protection...

I still have no money but can no longer live on $350 a month...

I owned a '74 Bultaco 250 Alpina back in the day. It was a GREAT woods bike and many hours of enjoyable riding were spent on it. Fun times.

Who the hell puts a kick starter on the left side?

Apparently it was a fad back then. My 1972 Penton 125cc Six Days Enduro had a Sachs engine with left side kick starter. It also came with lots of extra neutrals in the transmission, especially if the T-bar in the trans was at all worn!

I rode an old Russian two stroke Minsk (never seen a bike blow so much smoke) through central Vietnam, before taking off I asked our guide what the gearbox set up was, he said three up and a box full of neutrals.
There was definitely more neutrals than gears.

Broke off one of 4 of the plastic screws that hold the windscreen on a little while ago and have been holding it on since with 4 x metal screws as I just couldn't bring myself to pay AU$6.27 each for another 4 plastic OEM ones.

Recently found  a bag of 50 x M5 x 15 black nylon round heads online for the princely sum of around AU$8.00-$9.00 and now have plenty of spares on hand.

I didn't trust the plastic ones from day one and did the same thing when  I reinforced the shield support structure height adjustment mechanism.

The box I got are black oxide finished but are internal hex drive button head cap screws rather than Philips drive.

They were also cheap.

They're not used when I mount the winter barn door Givi shield.

😝

I never broke one and knew why plastic was used but weighing the advantages, I went black oxide steel. It's a real durable finish.

I think I knew why plastique was used but as it wasn't remotely recently, like this morning, I don't recall

Is the idea behind those plastic screws that they will shear during an impact, and possibly reduce rider injury risk?

It’s a legit question, as that’s the only plausible theory I can come up with for the factory plastic hardware on the windscreen.

Speaking of breaking or losing small fasteners, I'm sure many of us have lost or broken those pesky plastic push pin 'rivets' that love to fall into the abyss...  I went thru the Partzilla diagrams recently and made a list of all (that I know off) Yamaha P/Ns for the Tracer 9GT rivets. The bottom 6 on the list below are between $1 and $5 each from Partzilla, the top one appears to be the most commonly used one, and I got 100 from AliExpress for $1 plus $5 shipping. Yes, that was $1.00!  I've shared a bunch with other Tracer friends 'cause I'll never need 100, but it was a shocking price so I had to try them... they seem fine so far, I have used a few.

I also swapped those plastic screws out for metal ones after noticing two were broken. The heads were still there but the windscreen was pretty floppy and I could tell something was amiss before a ride. It was a bit of a surprise but I was glad to have caught the issue.

That's what I am led to believe Tex and like you, can think of no other reason why. 👍
