Complete control of slow-compression and rebound circuits. Fast-compression adjustment via shim stack re-valving. A couple of clicks covers temperature effects, passenger loads, as well as Touring vs Sporty vs Track riding profiles. Use of light-weight oil greatly diminishes temperature sensitivity. Easy front sag setting via preload adjustable fork caps to handle varying loads, tune the stroke range, and influence overall behavior.

I'm planning on installing Racetech springs, Elka piston kit and possibly have OEM Yamaha R1 cartridges machined and retrofitted. Price should be around 500$ of labor, plus parts. You can usually get the cartridges cheap, if you can find them from a racer who replaced them.

Hello, friends! Im really looking for the cheap fork swap (internals) as many of us solving problems with rear suspension buying used zx10 zx6r shocks.

This is the first possible swap I read about. Who knows more? Are there OEM forks we can use? OEM cartridges and springs?

Hey @cha0s, did you ever make the mod's?  If so, how did it work for you?

It worked out pretty good. Huge improvement over stock and now it behaves like a sportbike. It's even better than my Speed Triple was. The R1 carts did not fit properly, so we cept the fork caps and had to fit parts of ZX-10R cartridges. I'm still working on setup as the front end will chatter under really hard cornering, but other than that, I'm very satisfied.

Thanks for the update.  It sounds like you had a good deal of development to make this work.

Sorry for the bit-rot. Added a good handful of options and also items from Stoltec. The most likely candidates for drop-in cartridges from other bikes is probably the FZ1, but there are years with proper cartridges that are rebuildable and more recently several years where Yamaha went to pains to make them useless.

I'm reviving this ancient thread rather than starting a new one...

It looks like bitrot has removed or scrambled much of the info here, so I'm hoping to revisit this conversation about front end upgrades for the FJ-09.

I'd like to drop a few bucks this winter updating the front end of my 2015 FJ-09.

The rear came to me with a good aftermarket shock, which I had rebuilt. The front end has appropriate Sonic springs, but that's about it. There's obviously a lot of room for further improvement.

Going with Ohlins cartridges up front strikes me as far too spendy. Not to mention it looks like I'd have to use Ohlins springs. So something a notch or two down from that.

I'm looking for better bang for the buck with new parts (not really interested in hacking/adapting used parts), and I'd be open to working with a good suspension shop. There don't seem to be any around here (Indiana) that work with streetbikes, but I could be wrong. Or maybe there's a dealer in Indy with a decent suspension department.

I'm also a very experienced wrench in my own right, and I have the appropriate special fork tools, so I could do the mechanical work easily enough.

Thoughts for 2023?

A re-valve kit from Race Tech is inexpensive, and relatively easy to do.

Stoltec offers ready to install re-valved carts (with, or without a swap for your OE cart). They use GP hardware, including a new custom needle (unlike RT). A little more money than RT... but still good value.

Andreani carts are another option, but you might have to experiment with oil weight in the c-leg to get damping to your liking. No big deal really. Andreani bough FBI... so they are somewhat local now. You could call them up.

Glad you did- I'm researching front end upgrades for my 2020 Tracer 900GT for the winter. Have you made any choices yet?

I have the Andreani kit (Model 105/Y07) installed in my 2015 and while they were a vast improvement over the OEM stock I found there was a further improvement (for my weight and riding style) when I changed to 2.5wt in the compression leg while leaving the rebound with 5wt.   As always - YMMV.
