Metzeler Roadtec 01's

Recommended Posts

As I posted in another thread I put a new rear rt01 on my fj today.

Noticeably narrower and taller than oem rear.

And 5 gms of weight was too much so I ended up taking off the 10gm the bike came with and putting none back on.  A first for me.

The last three tires mounted on the rear of my FJ have not needed any weights.  Two Roadsmarts and one Bridgestone T30EVO.  The front is a different story.  The front rim is out and I leave one 30 gram weight on and it usually takes another 30-40 to balance it.

I carry an aerosol of Wynn's Tyrefix or similar. Works really well, even for the rest of the tyre's life in 2 occasions. Ignore any bollocks about never getting the tyre to seal again. The rim never has any gloop on it - it all gets flung onto the tyre as you ride along, then sets with the heat cycle.
Thanks Wessie for that info. Didn't know about that one.
Yeah, thanks Wessie.  I also picked up a nail on my trip to Tahoe, 420 miles after installing a new T30Evo.  I plugged it with a DynaPlug and continued, but after sitting two days the pressure was down to 20 lbs.  The nail went in at an exstreme angle and I guess I didn't quite match it, so  I ended up with two holes, both coming out at the same point.  After filling the tire every morning on my ride, as the tire would hold air when warm and in use as I checked the air a few times ea. day as I rode.  After getting home I put some Slime in the tire and let it sit overnight with the plug down.  Only lost 1 lb. over two days, and that may have been just before the Slime filled the hole with it's cotton and rubber fibers.  I plan on running this tire till the tread wears off.

I found the heavy spot on just the rim and then marked it.  With the new tire dots at the heaviest rim section I only need 15 gms weight to be pretty balanced. With the dots at the valve stem it was much worse.

FYI for anyone on the fence for the marc parnes balancer, it is much more accurate than my no-mar balancer.  Although my fj rear is so wide the parnes shaft is not long enough and I had to use the shaft from my no-mar balancer.  Also the no-mar balancer is handy when checking a wheel for true.

Anyone have a good online source for yamaha style clip on wheel weights?

Will this style weight work on the FJ?

  • 2 months later...
I've really liked the roadtec 01 tires although they haven't seen much rain (hasn't rained much lately here).

But I think the rear is wearing faster than I expected.

With Metzelers estimating rear center tire wear can be challenging. The 01s do have some short indentations in the center (as compared to others that have nothing). Their webiste says min 2mm but that makes more sense to me in terms of real grooves.

How does one read those wear indicators?
