Premium Member fanowater Posted June 8, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted June 8, 2015 Because I prefer soft saddlebags due to their light weight, I will need to be developing a solution soon. My current thought is to remove the two sides pieces on the tail the hard luggage mounts to. Then I will make a u shape from either aluminum tubing (1/2 square, 0.06 thick wall or 1/2 wide x 1/4" thick or perhaps round). Bolt that to the sub frame and it will keep the bags from swaying into the tire area. I still strap the bags down front and rear. I did something similar to this on my Daytona and it has worked perfectly. Since I only do 2, maybe 3 trips a year, where I need enough gear to require saddlebags, I don't mind spending 10 minutes installing/removing them. Will post some pics as soon as I get something made up. I should have read all three pages, you guys are way ahead of me. Ha. Good work. Guest fzrcraig
Has anyone with the Yamaha soft bags tried running the strap under the seat in order to take a passenger? Are there any options for these bags that would allow for a passenger (besides her sitting on the strap which I know won't go well for me)? vespadaddy
If you don't want to spend the $$ on an AirHawk seat pad for her, perhaps you could buy a piece of sheepskin, or cut a piece out of a car seat cover.
deersSlayer
Made 1/4" aluminum brackets to keep soft saddle bags away from wheel: Painted black. After a 1,500 km test (some black rubbed off at edges):http://i.imgur.com/qJu7aSH.jpg Reversed the brackets (even more paint worn off after my 5K km trip in June):http://i.imgur.com/gPwHsZM.jpg Because these new 'bags' (for the KTM 690 Enduro) fit the FJ well too: http://www.moskomoto.com/collections/moto-camping-luggage/products/reckless-80l(a 20+ minute video there explains all the bag's features well) Without the MOLLE extra bags:http://i.imgur.com/8hcJlry.jpg Rear view. Premium Member fanowater Posted July 18, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted July 18, 2015 So here is a picture of the soft luggage rack prototype. Still need to drill holes for using bungies to hold my tail bag in place, a drain hole per horizontal tube, prep and paint. The main tubing is 1" square and the verticals are 3/4" square. Top is 14", bottom bar is 15" (length of saddlebag) and the whole thing is 7" on the outside. Have square plastic inserts to plug each end. Each side only weighs a few ounces, 1/2 lb at the most. Currently using about 3/4 thick spacers, but may change that. Will post more pics when finished.
