Saddle Sore 1000

I have a friend who lives in Wichita, Kansas. He and I have been talking about ridding an Iron Butt Association, Saddle Sore 1000. Our plan was for him to ride from Wichita and me to ride from Salt Lake City. Meeting in Denver for lunch. We also have a mutual fried who lives in the Denver area, so we invited him to join us for lunch.

He suggested, Biker Jim's Gourmet Dogs. They are well known in the Denver area, for serving unique dogs. You can get a hot dogs made from rattle snake, reindeer, pheasant, beef and other things. My friends ordered, rattle snake and pheasant. I was not taking any chances and stayed with beef.

My route. I-15 south out of Salt Lake City to Spanish Fork. Turning south west on to US-6 down to I-70. Then taking I-70 over to the Denver area. Returning going north on I-25 to Fort Collins. Changing over to US 287, going to Laramie. Getting on I-80 for the rest of the trip home.

Total mileage ridden  1,141.9 as per my trip meter. This took just under 21 hours. Leaving just before 5 am, July 3rd and getting back before 2am, July 4th. I will be submitting my information for certification.

I learned a lot from this and am glad I did it.

I hope this encourages anyone who has been thinking about doing this. Go for it.

The Air Hawk seat cushion and cruse control are HUGE assets.

I could feel my cholesterol level rising as I studied these hot-dog pix!   Guys look happy enough though...

I'd like to hear about the Air Hawk seat cushion. I've seen it discussed as being very effective, but what makes it so good? How does it attach to the seat?

Great trip and update. I also am heading out in a couple of days (and use an airhawk). I use an airhawk R cruiser large size. It attaches using straps that I criss cross under the seat. Even the large size doesn't cover the entire seat but hangs over enough on the sides to be perfect for me. I can stand up on the bike and the hawk doesn't move a bit. Also going for a 1000 ride but not sure if I will pull it off or not.

Wishing you the best of luck. Watch the stops. Amazing how those just seem to eat time.
Are you going to submit it for certification?

Twenty plus years ago, a long distance rider gave me some tips. Hope they help you.
Riding underwear, a huge help.

Asprin, two every four hours.

The best advise ever given to me for chewing up the miles.

Good advice, except I would substitute Ibuprofen or Tylenol instead of Aspirin, due to the risk of subdural or intracranial hematoma if you are in an accident. Basically Aspirin inhibits clotting and internal bleeding can be worse.

But get your doctor's advice, I'm just a guy on the internet.
