Let's Talk Windscreens

Recommended Posts

I picked up a 2015 FJ09 brand new back in June 2016 and I've yet to mod it but recently I started thinking about windscreens. With the bike being out over a year and half now I want to who's making screens and why you recommend that particular screen. I saw a thread for the VStream windcreen and it looks cool but I'm wondering what are my other options. I'm looking for something that's not only functional but looks good as well.

This has been talked about A LOT.... http://fj-09.org/thread/122/fj-09-windshield-options

Lots of options... Puig, V Stream, CalSci, Ermax, Powerbronze and the list goes on... even some DIY screens out there.

I ended up with a Puig touring screen with the deflector. I feel it fits the lines of the bike and provides excellent wind protection. My only complaint is that it flexes a bit when in rough air, but doesn't seem to affect the function. Also, if you go with the Puig, make sure to contact their customer service and ask for the handguard displacers or the OEM handguards will make contact with the screen.

This thread holds a variety of DIY shorty windscreens: http://fj-09.org/thread/990/diy-lexan-short-sport-windscreen

The shorties are cheap and easy enough that I may fabricate one for summer riding and the reviews say it helps a lot with getting clean air over the helmet.
Edit: Also, an entire Forum subsection dedicated to Windscreens. Not sure if you've seen this one: http://fj-09.org/board/38/fj-09-windshields

I'm 5'11" .... At your height, you could probably get away with just using the wind screen without the additional deflector. Without the deflector, I still get good wind protection without buffeting, but significantly more wind noise than with the it. Its is fairly tall, but i think it fits the lines of the bike well.

If I remember correctly, in the picture from the previous post and the first picture below its in the highest position setting.

In the bottom picture below it is set to the middle height setting. With it in this setting, I am still able to see over the top of the wind screen. Mine is the light smoke color and I am able to see through it at night.

... It is quieter (wind) with my visor up...hmm.
I have noticed this as well and usually ride with my visor open and a pair of goggles on... even at highway speeds

I'm 6'2" and have the Puig touring with the spoiler on the top, set to the maximum deflection. With the seat in the highest setting I still get a lot of wind noise at motorway speeds. Dropping the seat down makes the noise disappear, but this alters my knee angle and I also end up looking through rather than over the screen, which I don't like doing.

This week I spaced the screen away from the mounting plate so I could refit my RAM mount there. The spacers are about 15mm long. Even with the seat back in the highest position and at speeds up to 90mph my head is now back in quiet air and I can see over the top of the screen again.

The roads here in the UK have been damp and slippery this week, with lots of salt on the road and this has been a useful diagnostic. If I ride at motorway speeds (85mph) any raindrops clear off my visor instantly so I must be getting smooth air flow in this region. More interestingly, I get dry salt marks just above my visor so rain (and air) must leave my helmet below that point, leaving a dry patch, which could be why the ride is now quiet. Who knew that winter riding could be a wind tunnel experiment?

thanks,
you may be right, at 5ft 7....ive also got 20mm scooped out of the seat, and use it in the low position, so without the deflector/spoiler would probably do it for me, but just out of curiosity, does the spoiler look like it would be possible to remove it, is it just a couple of screws

@wal there are 2 versions. 1 type screws directly into the windscreen the other clamps onto the top. I have the one that clamps on and can remove it in 30 seconds or less.

Most of these windscreens are either shaped or have cutouts to accommodate the ginormous handguards. I have this feeling that they compromise wind protection and/or aerodynamics. Are there compatible screens that work well with the handguards removed / replaced with smaller ones (e.g. KTM handguards)?

@autobiker you may have a point, but I have not complaints about the amount of wind protection i get from the Puig.

Yamaha sells a "touring" screen for the FJ-09. No cutouts for the hand guards. Looks hideous IMO, but maybe not to you.

I have been riding behind a 22" Madstad for the past year, and am well pleased with it. I'm 6' 4" with a 32 inch inseam. I have it positioned forward with the scalloped brackets. I also have the KTM hand guards, and they work a treat also and don't come close to hitting the screen lock to lock. It's a combo that looks good and works great!
