While it certainly did not fit the way it was, I trimmed it down in a few places and tried it out on my FJ. Not sure about it yet.... I agree with your thought that the FJ doesn't really need a tank protector, but if you want one, that's a good way to do it. I like how it hugs the contour of the fuel cap.
