urbannomad
Just got the stuff delivered and set about installing it. Got the 3P system installed with the top case rack inside the side case rack. However as i am trying to fit the top case plate, the rack just seems too wide to fit. What am i missing here?

urbannomad
Thanks.. will try that way. Did you use the supplied spacers or picked up something smaller?
Premium Member 2and3cylinders Posted May 16, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted May 16, 2017 You only need to use one set of the spacers, not both if I recall. I can check what is what and post photos for you but it was pretty easy and fast, and I used blue loctite all around. I also remember having to really push the top case bracket arms towards each other with quite a bit of pressure. I may have used have used a Quick Grip bar clamp for this purpose. Let me know if you want me to check install details.
Premium Member 2and3cylinders Posted May 16, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted May 16, 2017 ... I also remember having to really push the top case bracket arms towards each other with quite a bit of pressure. I may have used have used a Quick Grip bar clamp for this purpose. I don't recall fighting with the assembly to this degree. This will only happen if the top case brackets are installed square with the mount points on the bike (parallel). I tapered the tail a tad by shimming out the front facing mount points with washers. Probably works either way, but there shouldn't be any serious tension in the assembly IMO. I also shimmed out the front but I have a different plate maybe than what is current because I bought 2 plates maybe 4 or 5 years ago when I first mounted the top case plate on a modified NZ Ventura tail bag rack system on my VTR1000F. I have the top case brackets on the outside of the side case brackets because on my FJ-09 if the side case brackets were inside it looked like they'd impinge on the grab rails which sweep down and in very close to the side of the tail. See below photos. Oh, and if you look closely you'll see my auxiliary "Night Rider" red LED brake light strip bonded to the side and back of the mounting plate, that when illuminated runs back and forth and flashes alternately side to side. This light strip is quite effective even during the day as it is in the shadow of the top case. I also have very bright amber LED side marker light strips, and rubber covered foot pegs (BBs packed full and solid in the handlebars also seem to quell vibration a lot. So much so that I often find myself cruising at 70 mph in 4th gear). IMO the OEM tail - stop light is weak and is next on my hit list along with a sump guard, suspension mods and maybe an automatic chain oiler. The Velcro on the pillion saddle help keep my Nelson-Rigg tail and dry bags from sliding fore and aft.

But wasnt sure if that was appropriate, given its almost an inch out. Will also attempt what @piotrek has suggested.

I didn't use all washers, just what I needed for the geometry to work. I had two sets of instructions, one for the SH36, and one for SH48... but not the two together. Given that Shad shows both fitted to the bike in marketing material, you'd figure they'd be clearer . I can take more shots if you need... let me know.Given Oakville - Mississauga distance, i might just hop over when convenient for you to have a look in person
urbannomad
Circling back: spent an evening & got this done finally! Thanx to both you gentlemen & your links. The key turned out to be: keeping everything loose enough to let the top case arms have enough flex as @piotrek pointed out. I just worry that the top case plate screws now have a lot of lateral pressure which shouldn't be the case. But Shad guys didn't have a solution any which way either.
