Premium Member 2and3cylinders Posted May 31, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted May 31, 2017 After making my own out of ABS hugger extension and despite thermoforming a center stiffening ridge that matched the OEM hugger profile, it snapped off cleanly after about 7,000 miles. I had used the readily available and cheap ($14) short black painted aluminum MT-10 hugger extension as a drill template but never installed it until mine snapped off but that was for only 3 rides, as the Pyramid CF hugger extension arrived in today's post from the Queen's realm. The instructions, as I already knew, called for roughening the underside of the fender and topside of the extension, cleaning and then bonding them together with either Pyramid's miracle glue, or a comparable Sika adhesive. I chose to use my trusty 3M exterior double-sided (gray) mounting tape (after thoroughly cleaning the bond surfaces with acetone) and stainless steel fasteners, which entailed drilling the very thin (and light) CF extension. I had trepidation about drilling the CF, being concerned about fraying and cracking despite it appearing to be well made. Well, I did drill it and potted the edges of the holes with methylmethacrylate ("super glue"), and made some polyethylene washers that I bonded to SS flat washers which, in turn, I bonded to nylock nuts to create a nut-washer assembly (to soften and spread out the concentrated clamping load of the fasteners) to facilitate ready threading on of the nuts to the screws in the limited access space between the tire and hugger. Once the fasteners were snugged up, I temporarily fitted over-night spring clamps to the portions of the extension - oem hugger overlap in the hope of ensuring a uniform bond of the 3M tape between and to the two surfaces in the 24 hours it will take the tape to reach full strength. All in all it took a lot of precise and delicate work but the finished installation should keep the shock and underside of the rear of the bike cleaner, my true goal; and the CF adds some bling and design sympathy to the mock OEM CF scattered about the conveyance. A polypropylene version of the exact same item is also available for $5 less; my purchase price including shipping was $48.48 because I asked and received 10% off the asking Ebay price. http://www.ebay.com/itm/122482132487?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Bottom line this extension offers about 90% of the coverage of the R&G full replacement hugger at about 1/3 the price and with less weight and more bling factor IMO. http://www.twistedthrottle.com/r-g-rear-hugger-yamaha-fz-09-
