tripleb
Hello all, I've had my FJ for about 4 months now, and have managed to log about 1,800 miles to date. Unfortunately I've started noticing issues with my down shifting starting at around 3rd gear. Seems to be quite rough and non consistent. I would shift and hit a blank spot where nothing happened, gear indicator on handlebar would read zero, I then would have to pull in the clutch and firmly downshift again. Other times shifting from 3rd to 2nd, and 2nd to first would be quite erratic. Definitely not smooth by any nature. Has anyone else noticed this issue as well? I hope someone is able to shed some helpful info my way. Thank you in advance guys .
suitedsevens
I am having the exact same issue. I'm right behind you at about 1500 miles. It usually happens to me when I'm pulling up to a stop light and down shifting from 5th to first. My "blank spot" is usually in between 4th and 3rd but it does seem to move around once in a while. It only seems to happen about once every few days so I kinda just forget about it but it's quite unnerving. BBB
I would start with the simple stuff, like adjusting the shifter rod and seeing if it makes a difference for you. duhs10
The bike is under warranty. Bring it in and let them check. ^^^ This. Also, make sure you are letting the shifter come all the way back up after shifting down (or up for that matter). I've noticed this transmission prefers/needs that full "reset" between gears. isteve
My FJ is coming up on 4 months also. I really haven't had any shifting problems but have had to adjust the clutch several times and around 2500 miles I lubed the shifter pivot. The pivot was dry like they forgot to lube it. If you are moving slow or not at all when downshifting most transmissions will find neutrals especially if the clutch needs adjusting and is dragging a little. rain
Mine also, almost 6000 miles but has done it consistently since new. I just thought "they all do that", since others have termed the shifting as 'notchy'. FWIW, this only happens at low speed/low RPM downshifting, like when slowing to a stop and having to drop down 2 or 3 gears to get to first. If I downshift at more speed appropriate times, it's always smooth and consistent. (And I'm an under 5k rpm type of rider.) (mostly)

dbeau
2017 with 3k miles here. Never experienced this. However I almost always shift down through each gear, engine braking through each gear as I come to a stop.

However I almost always shift down through each gear, engine braking through each gear as I come to a stop.I used to ride that way. I read that it caused significantly more tire wear. I stopped going through all the gears to slow and now down shift once stopped. My tires do seem to last longer. Let’s go Brandon
outdoorvtguy
As someone may have suggested already, have you tried adjusting the shift lever? I usually ride with fairly big boots ( for my big feet ) and adjusted the lever accordingly. On those odd days when I wear sneakers, I experience the same issue you mention because the lever is almost too high for the shoes. Just something to try.
