New FJ-09 owner here from Charlotte

Just got home with a new leftover 2016 FJ-09GS. Selling my 2016 Tiger XRT. I’m riding it to Alaska in July. I originally purchased the Tiger for trip, because everyone seems to like the Tiger and adventure bikes seems to be the choice, but it’s too much adventure and I need something a little more sporty. I’ve had a couple FZ1s, Z1000, R1, F4I, Bandit 1200, and a couple WR450SM and did a lot lot of dirt bikes with Motocross and trails. Getting older and decided I need to start seeing N. America on a bike. This FJ seems to be the ticket and a healthy balance of power and long distance fun.

I need to purchase the 50L Yamaha top case and mount and taller windshield, and throttle lock or some type of CC, and a way to mount a USB connector in the factory spare 12V location to the right of the cluster. My research begains with a lot of reading and searching.

Currently have the FJ, Tiger 800 XRT, and a 1980 Yamaha GT80 sitting in the garage.

Congrats on the new bike, I'm sure you will love it. Look at the madstad windshield, I've been extremely happy with mine, after 2 years. and there was a link about the USB 12V connector just a few days back, do a search and you should find it.

Welcome to the forum @arcboy and congratulations on choosing the better bike.

Unless you are set on the Yam top box, it might be worth reading the forum for suggestions on luggage options. For example, Shad SH36 side cases are popular as they keep the weight down low and don’t impact handling as much as a huge topbox. There are also a lot of tailbag options if you don’t use luggage a lot.

Welcome to the forum arcboy. The FJ-09 does make a pretty fine sports tourer and an electronic cruise control can really help out there on the superslab. For a short while, the forum was working with a fellow in MN who produced an ECC for the FJ/FZ/MT-09, but he disappeared. Now the only source I'm aware of is MC Cruise in Australia ( https://www.mccruise.com/collections/all/yamaha-fj-09 ). The cost is fairly high ($500 USD) plus shipping which can be steep.

I did see that.  I think I am going to go with a Powerlet on one side and a dual USB on the other and wire up a fuseable linked powerlet straight to the batter to replace the SAE and get an adapter for the tender.

Whew, those Madstad's are pricey.

I did.  its the Silver with purple wheels, not my first choice but that ok still looks good.  I almost had one from Team Charlotte, but the sales guy wouldn't come off on the price of a used one with a warranty, so for $1500 more I got a new one.  The sleezman told me to call him before making a purchase to try and win my business.  So after shaking on the Mathew's deal I called him and told him the deal for $9K OTD.  He said he could match that on a year newer(2017) in Yamaha blue, which I would love.  The problem is I shook on the deal and am a man of my word and the deal was done at that point.  Makes me mad, because if he wasn't being a sleezeman I would have had the version that I really would have wanted for the same price.  Thats why no one likes a sales person and their shady ways.  Mathew's Fun Machines guys are way nicer and not pushy and I just got a much better vibe off them.

I figured I would save some money on the just getting the top case and not get the side cases.  My Tiger has top and side cases and after my camping ride I was fully loaded with a dry bag in front of the top case and had nothing in the top case after I was loaded.  I have ridden around without side cases and just a top case and that felt soooo much better without those side cases.  So my thoughts were no side cases and just have a large top case and two dry bags.  We don't cook and camp so that reduces a lot of stuff to load up.

Now that I just typed all those reply's I noticed I wasn't quoting anyone...idiot. haha
Yeah I saw that and that just looks hideous and really don't want to add something like that on a brand new bike with a warranty.  As much as I didn't really use it on my Tiger, I'm confident that a throttle lock like the Kaoko or Atlas should be a good alternative unless a CC like that looks better and for a much better price for something to come available.

I'll have to do some more research on the different throttle locks.

Mmmm. WR450SM. That's nice. Congrats on the bike, sounds like you have great taste in motorcycles!
Heck yeah!!  Actually a WR426 and WR450 both were converted and you can't beat them I don't care what you ride.  They blast through any corner way easier than any sport bike and hop a curb when ever you want and super light!!  They just suck on highways.  Thanks, and I think I finally found the best compromise of bike that is out there and even better that its a Yamaha.

I've been telling myself for probably 5 years now that I'm going to build myself a WR450SM. But I sold my Husky SM610 because it was encouraging me to do bad things. Since there's no cart tracks, or even really tight roads, around here it will probably be a while before I get around to building a WR.

Arcboy,
This is Brick on the forum and I live just up the road from Charlotte near Morganton. There are a group of us in the area, quite a few of us are retired so have time to ride during the week. We have a forum to help get rides together. Check it out at www.cofsta.com. AKA... Carolina Old Farts Sport Touring Association. At least I grew of us have FJ09’s.
