Premium Member DavidS Posted May 23, 2018 Premium Member Share Posted May 23, 2018 I just bought the Garmin Zumo 395LM, and installed it on my bike, right above the stock display. Looks great, and works great. Although, I'll freely admit, I still don't really know how to use it yet. I have figured out how to convert a google maps route to gpx, and import it into the unit. I'll be trying to retrieve and follow that route tomorrow. Anyone using this unit that wants to share tips/tricks/ideas all are welcome......... Too many features for me to comprehend at this point, it will take me a while to figure out what I actually want to use, and what is just to keep the marketing folks happy. So far it seems solid, install was a snap, and I'm excited to learn what it can do.

Premium Member 1moreroad Posted May 26, 2018 Premium Member Share Posted May 26, 2018 Anyone using this unit that wants to share tips/tricks/ideas all are welcome......... Use BaseCamp to plan routes instead of Google. Garmin seems to go backwards with every iteration of PC software, but it will still set up routes better than Google Maps. BaseCamp now has a curvy road routing like TomTom has had for years. I have to plug my Garmin into my computer to unlock BaseCamp.

I have to plug my Garmin into my computer to unlock BaseCamp. I got tired of Basecamp as the drag route option had a tendency to be a little obstinate and on occasion would not work at all so I read about Furkot on the ADV Rider website and gave it a try and it is easy peasy and has never been an issue and I have been using it for 3 years now and have planned multiple trips and can save them in gpx for my Garmin and kml files for the Mapsme on my phone, works a charm. https://furkot.com https://help.furkot.com/features/mobile-apps.html Cheers
rambuck
How did you mount it and can you post pics? Thanks.
Premium Member DavidS Posted May 27, 2018 Author Premium Member Share Posted May 27, 2018 How did you mount it and can you post pics? Thanks.I purchased a ram ball from Amazon that mounts behind the windshield with the ball sticking up behind the dash. Picture of the mounting bracket uninstalled: Picture of the mounting bracket installed: And picture of my bike with the bracket installed - Garmin device is in the holder I chose to mount the GPS right over the dash (but still behind the windshield) to make it easy to see. It is very visible, and I don't have to take my eyes off the road to see it. On the negative side, I'm having a lot of problems with the Garmin software. I can take the device for a ride, and it does fine, but trying to use Basecamp or manually enter a route into the gps is not that great. For some reason, I can't import a GPX file into the Garmin device, I can only enter the waypoints manually. I did get a route on my first use of the device, just by riding, but I can't replicate that now either. I'm going to call Garmin on Monday and see what I'm doing wrong. I do like the device though, I just need to learn how to operate it properly.

chitown
Some Zumos may be different but I think I've done it at least two ways for gpx routes: connect the gps to the computer, dropped the gpx file in the gpx folder on the gps, unplug, power up, and it would tell me it has found new data to import. Other method, open the gpx file with Basecamp, and do a Send to Device. IIRC you'll want to keep the setting in the gps for auto recalculating off or it may significantly change the route when opened.

Ill try that. power up, and it would tell me it has found new data to import This. Data from Basecamp shouk because stored under Tools:My Data:Import Data. After it's loaded and converted on the zumo it should be under Tools: Custom Routes.

I have tried both of these methods (several times) and neither seems to transfer the route to the Garmin. The only trip I have on my device is the first trip I rode with the Garmin installed. After I completed the ride, it asked me if I wanted to save the trip, and I did. I've read the manuals (multiple times) and watched a bunch of youtube video's all say the same thing, but don't work for me. I'm going to call Garmin this coming week and see if I can find out what I'm doing wrong.

chitown
I can see the .GPX files in the GPX folder on the Garmin, but they don't show up as routes when I turn the Garmin onGarmin customer service is good IME so they'll probably be able to get you squared away. My last post was from memory so did this just now with my Zumo 660 to make sure I didn't mis-remember. Just to rule out a corrupt file etc: downloaded a random gpx file online from http://www.motorcycleroads.com/75/101/California/Twisty-Road-Next-140-miles!!!-(California-Route-36).html. There's a "Download GPX" button on that page. - Connected Zumo. My device mounts the GPS internal storage as GARMIN and the extra sd card as NO NAME. - Copied the downloaded gpx file to GARMIN/Garmin/gpx. - Disconnected Zumo. Power up. - Shortly after the GPS is ready it detects the new data and raises a dialog: "New User Data detected. Import now?" - Clicked Yes - Selected Trip Logs on next dialog. - Selected "Twisty-Road-Next-140-miles..." - Clicked Import - When it's done importing it displays "Data imported successfully." - From home screen, click Where To?, then click Custom Routes, route is now listed there and can be previewed etc. Maybe that will help. Good luck!
Premium Member DavidS Posted May 28, 2018 Author Premium Member Share Posted May 28, 2018 I tried to transfer your Twisty-Road...... gpx file to my Garmin without success. Detailed steps below..... I downloaded the Twisty-Road-Next-140-Miles. gpx, and performed the following steps: 1 - In BaseCamp, I highlighted "My Collection" under On My Computer 2 - Inside BaseCamp selected File Import, and selected "Twisty-Road-Next-140 Miles.gpx 3 - Under "My Collection" I see "Twisty-Road---Next-140-miles!!!-(California-Route-36) and can see the map route in BaseCamp 4 - After several minutes of nothing, I see the Garmin Express window pop up, and it says my Zumo 395 - Not Connected 5 - The Garmin device rebooted 6 - After the Garmin device came back to life, under My Garmin Devices, I see my Zumo unit and the SD card I installed in the Unit 7 - It then appeared to transfer the "Twisty-Road---Next-140-miles!!!-(California-Route-36)" route to my Garmin (Select BaseCamp->Transfer and select Twisty-Road......) 8 - wait 5 minutes to be sure the trip had enough time to export 9 - I close Garmin Basecamp, and Disconnected the Garmin from my computer 10 - I turned the Garmin on and selected Apps and then Trip Planner 11 - The new trip was **not** in Trip Planner under either my Trip Planner or my Imported Trips sections Using BaseCamp version 4.7.0 - and selecting update says I'm on the latest version Am I doing something wrong? Premium Member 1moreroad Posted May 28, 2018 Premium Member Share Posted May 28, 2018 Maybe the Garmin is not seeing the SD card? Try taking the card out of the Garmin and mounting it in the computer directly. Can you see the file on the card then?
