Sorta new guy

Recommended Posts

Hello, I've been a long time Honda guy but I am very interested in the FJ 09. Honda isn't building anything that gets me excited to buy right now. I currently own a 1979CBX and a (recently deceased) ST1100. I'm looking at the FJ to replace the ST.

My question is are there any differences between the model years? I am finding quite a few 2015 leftovers in showrooms and wonder if I should go for one of those or opt for one of the newer models.

Welcome!

15's and 16's are virtually identical AFAIK. 17's changed some things, not necessarily for the better.

T'was me, I'd get the best deal I could on a leftover '15 and spend the difference on suspension, seat, ECU and farkles.

Welcome @cbxdave! You had me at CBX... very nice.

The FJ is a gem of a motorcycle, and has been - for me at least - the perfect mix of sport bike, hooligan, and touring mount. I have thrown some $$ at suspension upgrades, ECU remap, and other odds & ends. I’m one of the few that seem to be ok with the stock seat, but my days typically don’t cover more than about 250 miles.

For what it’s worth, I had an ST1300 previously, and honestly never really bonded with it. I found it smooth, silent, bulletproof, beautifully built, and totally without character. My wife described it as an Accord that was easier to fall off of... charming. The FJ isn’t the distance tourer that the ST is, but the trade off is much lighter weight & responsiveness. And the CP3 triple is absolutely intoxicating.

There is a ton of collective knowledge on this forum, so welcome and take a look around. The FJ is a great bike... you won’t be disappointed.

Whats the hot ticket for seats? I had a Corbin on my ST and was pretty happy with it.
The Corbin solves some of the problems that the stocker presents. It's a one piece and is very stable. Weighs a few lbs. more than the stocker. After you get it broken in, it is very comfortable. I really like mine.

I bought the FJ! I ended up getting a used 2015 with only 2700 miles on it, so still like new. Had it a week now and I'm liking it alot. I certainly see why everyone raves over the engine, that thing rips! I like the riding position, its pretty comfy. Will be great with a seat, that needs help. i'm pretty happy with my choice so far.

The three most common seats I see for the FJ-09 are

Corbin
Sargent
Terry

I have the Corbin, 3 years now and still love it.

I received my Terry Adcox seat on Monday and it then rained for two days. Finally got out yesterday for about a hundred miles. I like it! So much better than the stocker. It does raise the seating position which has me tippy toeing at stops. I'll deal with that for the more comfortable ride. Hoping to get out for a longer ride this weekend.
