Tank bag ideas?

Recommended Posts

Hepco & Becker, among other things, will have their 'lock-it tank ring' available for the FJ. This tank ring bolts right down onto the existing tank ring, and provides two industrial strength magnets which hold the tank bag into place. Detaching the tank bag is a simple matter of pulling the available drawcord, which reverses the magnetic polarity, thus naturally repelling the tank bag from the mounts.

The GIVI tank lock system doesn't work with the FJ-09 unmodified due to the plastic trim piece on the FJ. I have not asked them yet to see if they are coming out with an adapter to correct this.
If you shim all 3 connection points, the filler cap will not open.
I modified the top connection point only by replacing the top bolt with a longer one and adding a rubber shim (about 2mm). This seems to be enough to allow the bag to attach properly (see adapter pics). Otherwise the 308 bag fits nicely on the tank.
I am also using the safety strap in case the bag comes loose, however, I have put about 80 miles on since attaching the bag and it is staying attached.

I got fed up with the Oxford X30 tankbag - lovely bag for using as a tankbag but a royal PITA when it comes to refuelling as the headstock strap is just too fiddly.

I've always been a fan of Bagster tankbags and I have one ready to use. Until a few days ago I didn't know they made a universal harness and it is quite cheap at £27 from http://www.motorcycleheaven.co.uk/bagster-tank-covers/easy-straps/easy-road-tank-bag-straps

I will use it with an Alpha bag.

I was nearly going to sell my Bagsters', please let us know how you get on with the universal strap.

Easy to fit - the headstock strap is longer than the Oxford one which helps plus they supply a myriad of straps with a range of end fittings so you can adapt to suit your bike.
I quite like being able to see the tank sides so people can see the pretty paint rather than  vinyl cover. I'll post a review after using it a few times but I have a full tank of fuel to get through first.

I think a 3 strap bag works best.
I ordered this yesterday:
http://www.rka-luggage.com/A02%20Tankbags/11SR3%20Build%20sheet/113W%20Build%20Sheet.html

It's a smaller bag (don't feel crowded):http://i.imgur.com/n1EWtPP.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/oqL22n5.jpg
With the bigger map window (attaches with Velcro):http://i.imgur.com/0Z6zTNs.jpg
Expanded (+10 beer!):http://i.imgur.com/iAlpLRX.jpg
Lots of clearance:http://i.imgur.com/u2JXJc3.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/heBKvlh.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/zPvM8E1.jpg

Hi DeersSlayer,
I like that bag. It's horizontal & flat!
Could you please take a shot of the central strap where it is connected under the seat, please?
I have a perfectly good Wolfman tank bag but with 4 straps. The clip buckles allow very quick bag removal to access the fuel cap. Unfortunately, I don't have my bike yet. I'd like to know where to strap the rear 2 straps under the seat....
Cheers,
Steve

Will do, tonight.
I had the small Wolfman 4-point for my WR250. The only thing I didn't like about it was the small map pocket window. Once a year I go on a ride called the Magical Mystery Tour, which pretty much requires a regular size map window.

So I replaced my Wolfman with an RKA 4-point Pine Flat:
http://www.rka-luggage.com/A02%20Tankbags/11PF4%20Build%20sheet/11PF4%20Build%20Sheet.html
It's the exact same tank bag as the one I just bought, but like your Wolfman has 4 straps. It should work well on my KTM 690 Enduro (sold the WR250.) Seems stupid of me to not just use the 4-point Pine Flat on the FJ-09 too, but the 3-point straps don't touch the beautiful RED paint on the gas tank. :D

Thanks DeersSlayer,
yeah, that would be the biggest issue of a 4 point strap. The rear 2 would be rubbing on the tank paint. The only thing will be where & how the straps are tied to the frame / subframe......
Edit: Having a look at some images above yours, it seems like the rear 2 straps could tie to the frome of the rear subframe.... The Wolfman bag has clip buckle protective pads similar to your RKA. The front are exactly the same. Could you also take a photo of where these front 2 are tied to the front? Please?
Cheers,
Steve

There's a couple of others in this thread with 4-point attachments that seem to go under the side plastic faux-carbon panels, they might have more pics.

Thanks DeersSlayer,
good work!
I think the 2 rear straps can loop around the gaps between the faux carbon plastic & front tubes of the rear subframe!
How much strap pressure will be on the plastic depends on me trying to loop it tight!
When I get my bike, I'll strap on the Wolfman & take some snaps!
Cheers again mate.

Unless I've missed a post on this thread, it doesn't seem like anyone has found a good solution that doesn't leave something ugly on the bike when you aren't using a tank bag. That's unfortunate. I guess it's because of the plastic fairing covering the front half of the tank. When my bike isn't all bagged up in touring mode, I want it to look as bare as possible. Maybe I'll do without a tank bag...

For my small RKA:
The single rear strap goes under the riders seat. Re and re both seats, about 1 minute?
The 2 forward straps can attach together and are mostly hidden low in front of the gas tank. Should only take 1 or 2 minutes.

You should be able to do that with most of the 3-point tank bags.
