questions... and little help with potential purchase

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Looking at a 2015 FJ with a tad over 6K miles.  Owner states is dropped on a gravel driveway and sent me pictures of the damage.  Mostly a few scratches on the bar end that I am not worried about, but the stator cover is scratched and possibly dented a bit.  Was wondering what I should be aware of before making an offer?

Should I just look for leaks/crack in case and check the voltage on the battery while the bike is running?

Any help would be appreciated.

Chris

Welcome to the forum csinsc, You did not say how much the seller is looking for the 2015 FJ. I would first look at how much a new left over would cost. Remember with a new bike you would be getting a warranty. Why did the seller not fix the bike? and how much will it cost to repair all the damage, figure dealer rates for the work. Use all these things as a barging point when coming to a deal.

Great comments.. seller is asking around 6.5K, and he states that he is selling due to multiple bikes.  I think he may have picked it up cheaply and is trying to move it.

I believe that I can replace the cover myself. My concern/question is what to look for or if I can determine if there is any stator damage without pulling the cover.

Thanks,
Chris

You have to see the bike in person and look for other damage to the bike look at the forks, swingarm, plastics, tank any place that might have made contact. the stator cover is easy to replace listen closely for noise coming out of the stator cover that sounds like grinding or screeching and check voltage output. If you are not real familiar with working on bikes have an independent shop do a pre-buy inspection for you, money well spent If the seller bocks at this runaway. The price just seems high to me. Remember the bike may have a lot of added accessories but that does not make the bike worth much more in reality.

I'm not really one that is too worried about a bike being dropped.. however there are a decent amount of left over new and also some used FJ's with A LOT of accessories that can be had for similar prices. I would be patient and find something that is obviously a great but.

Having said that... as long as you are able to inspect the bike and all seems good. Stator covers are not a big deal to replace.

Chris normal voltage is 13-14V at idle IIRC. So long as it's not below 12.5V or above 14.5V you're okay.

The case covers are magnesium which is good at absorbing impacts. I don't think a drop would cause any internal damage. $6.5k is a bit high IMO. Personally I'd negotiate for $5-5.5k.

Good luck!

I think 6.5k is high for a 2015, especially one that's been dropped and shows cosmetic damage.  Also, 10k miles is not low mileage.

With the Tracer 900 GT now in the market, FJ prices should be falling.

If it were me, I walk away from this deal.

Thank you for the reference voltages.

I agree 6.5k is about 1.5k more than I would want to spend on it.

I may throw out that 5k number to see what he says, and I would want to take measurements before I commit to purchase.

I do hope that with the Tracer showing up, that I can pick up an FJ with low miles in the 5 to 6k range.

Don’t be too sure. I did a smash repair on a Mt-09 at work and the cover was still intact but it had flexed enough to allow the rotor to hit the stator and bend the poles. Both the rotor and stator needed replacing. It still charged fine, even with the rotor being bent slightly.

proprice seems $1k high for 2015, even without damag.

Good advice.

Also remember the coolant needs to be drained and the water pump removed to replace that cover. A bit more involved repair, I’d say a minimum of 4-500 bucks.
