Supporting Member maximNikenGT Posted September 16, 2020 Supporting Member Share Posted September 16, 2020 (edited) After giving my Niken GT a bath I went to lube my chain. Cleaned off my chain with paper towels and nitrile gloves since I was using 75w90 weight Redline gear oil for lubrication. While I was cleaning off the dirty chain a horrific smell came off the chain. None of my other chain driven motorcycles smelled like that when cleaning. Is this normal if you're chain hasn't been cleaned in 800 miles on a new bike? The smell was so putrid I almost gagged. Smelled like something died on the chain. Supporting Member maximNikenGT Posted December 1, 2020 Author Supporting Member Share Posted December 1, 2020 The smell was actually from the gear oil I was using. Hoo wee. No wonder Chain Wax sells as well as they do - avoid the smell. 2019 Niken GT "Motorcycles - the brand is not important, the fact that you ride is." nhchris
I'm a big fan of chain wax. Less dirty, adheres well and smells kinda nice actually. But don't mistakenly put it on the windscreen 1 1968 Triumph Bonneville 650 1971 Norton Commando Roadster 2002 Harley 1200 Sportster 2003 Honda ST 1300 2016 FJ

Ride365
Yup gear oil has a strong scent, give the Dupont chain saver lube a try......best I have used for any of the lubes, and I have pretty much tried them all over the years.

Big +1 on this stuff. Been using it on all my chain-driven bikes for about 160,000 of my 182,000 total miles so far. Have had nothing but great results. Will keep using it till the end. 1 2019 Yamaha Tracer 900 GT (Annabelle) 2013 Suzuki V-Strom DL650 (Juliette) 2013 Yamaha FJR 1300 (Rachel) 2008 Suzuki Bandit 1250S (Fiona) 2006 Honda VFR800 (Jenny) 2005 Suzuki V-Strom DL650 (Hannah) 2003 Honda Shadow Sabre VT1100 (Veronica)
WKE002
think i bought a fake sikolene pro chain lube, talking to sikolene HQ is useless, just arrived, Bel-Ray Superclean lubricant which yet to try. also got myself 5lt of Kerosene. did try gear oil before, smells bad and my case, it flings all over just after 1 short ride.
