odd problem

Recommended Posts

Got a weird question for you guys. Might be a little hard to explain but ill do my best. I have a Delkevic 8inch exhaust on my fj09 and as it sounds amazing it is giving me some issues with my ears. At cruising speeds and when getting on the throttle slightly the exhaust creates (best i can explain it) a droning, low tone that causes my ears to ring (from what im assuming is vibration of the inner ear)... but heres the problem, it only does this to my ears when I have ear plugs in and a helmet on. without either theres no issue besides it being too loud. but with a helmet on (ive tried 4 different helmets, currently using a AGV K6) and ive also tried 5 different types of ear plugs ranging from $1-$40. They all exhibit the issue. Again I know this sounds weird, but its not wind noise or anything else, its only when the exhaust is hitting certain rpms, most specifically cruising ranges. Im at a point where im about to put the stock exhaust back on but really dont want to resort to this. Any ideas or experience? - the main problem here is that my ears are ringing after riding short time frames with earplugs in not because its too loud, but some weird noise/vibration its making off the helmet im assuming...?

I thought this was supposed to be a judgement free zone...

Anyway, my guess is there is just some sort of resonance coming out of the pipe at that specific RPM that can work its way into your ears, and the earplugs are actually helping it.  Probably need to start at the source and change something with your exhaust.  Those baffles you can buy might not cut down volume a ton, but I'm willing to bet they will change harmonics.  Hopefully for the better.

Maybe as an experiment, take the baffle out you have.  See what happens.

True to all of this. will try the baffle out first then order that one. better to try $50 before $200

I too have suffered from tinnitus and its no joking matter.  I would definitley advise you to get a stock exhaust back on there asap. The droning frequency must be exactly the correct tone to set your ear ringing  off. Hearing loss is almost always asssociated with ringing in the ears.  Get that Delkevic off and save your hearing.

I was about to order Delkevic's 14inch to replace mine. Dont you think thatll will be quiet enough and hopefully not cause as much vibation

Also, if I do go back to the stock exhaust do I have to do a ECU flash

Do you know if it was flashed for the pipe? Seriously the OEM pipe does not hold the bike back. Since you don't like the noise, you can probably find the OEM exhaust free. Even here.

The stock flash is what holds bikes back today.
