  1. Is it possible to see through the dark smoke screen at night?I like the dark smoke more but if it is going to be a problem to night ride then definitely going to buy the light smoked one
I initially found the screen so dark that it was hard to see obstacles directly in front of me (I can see over the screen about 15 feet out), but I've adjusted to it since then and it doesn't bother me any longer.  It is extremely dark and at night it's very difficult to see through it, but again it's only an issue for the patch of ground right in front of you.
I would seriously consider the light smoke if I were buying again.
  2. Hi, Where did you go in Canada to purchase the Puig screen?
Also, do you have any pictures or more details as to how you modded the handguards?
I am undecided between the Puig and the Parabellum screens at the moment so looking at ease of install and effectiveness.
    Thanks
I bought it from bs-motoparts.com in Germany.  Ended up costing me about $250 and took about a week from ordering to receive it (~6 business days), so I was happy with them.  It looks like it's back in stock at revzilla, however.  With exchange and shipping the price should be in the same ballpark.

  3. Has anyone mounted the Puig screen with Puig hand guards?
The Puig hand guards don't exist yet.  According to a rep I spoke with, they are still in development.  This seems slightly odd considering they have pics up, but perhaps they are just tweaking the production process.  They are due out by the end of the year or earlier.
  4. I bought one and whilst I was initially excited, that felling was short lived,  when I found the hand guards hit the Screen!
No matter what setting I used,  the hand guards would hit the screen,  and I  one instance almost caused me to fall off.

I contacted Puig, and was advised used to adjust the handguards in by 10mm, which as we all know isn't an option,  as such I returned the screen, but have to live with the scratches on the inside of the handguards caused by the screen.

Sorry to hear you had a bad (and dangerous) experience.  I'm not sure what they meant by adjusting the handguards by 10mm.
To be fair, the instructions specifically instruct you to remove the handguard outer deflector; and this warning is also on the website.

I don't find there is a huge difference in look with the outer deflectors off, particularly once I replaced the screws with hex bolts and black bolt caps.  Some people strongly disagree with me, though.  Either way, I'll be putting on their accessory hand guard covers when they are released (their Canadian rep tells me this will be late November or December) which will negate the issue.
  5. I used a small amount of gorilla marine glue, specifically to resist water and because the drying time is 2 hours vs 5-30 seconds of many other glues - I pictured getting the grip half on and then having the glue dry and prevent finishing the job.

My big issue is that the next day I'm getting a really annoying rattling sound from the right side of my bike and I have no clue why. I took it back apart to see if a screw had come loose or something, but I can't find anything. All I can tell is it is coming from somewhere between the gearbox and the top of the right cylinder. Then suddenly it disappeared when I shifted into 5th gear and was no longer present in any gear. But now it's coming back...hopefully not something loose in the gearbox or something. BAH!
  6. You guys all make it sound so easy, but the instructions are a little intimidating as I have no experience with messing with a bike to this extent. I like to think I'm a smart guy and I've done superficial installs like hardbags, back rests, winshields, etc, but I'm wondering if I would be out of my depth in attempting this.
I'm always up for a challenge, but I don't want to f*** up my bike. Can anyone comment as to whether this is a reasonable project for someone with very little experience in such things? Much appreciated.
Easy weasy. If you can wipe your a$$, you can do this. Maybe a little hyperbole, but you get the point. I will be available when you try this incase you run into problems but I don't think it will be required. Buy the kit, take it out of the box and ask away after you review the pictures and writeup. If you are ever in So. Cal I will do it for you.

It seems you were indeed correct.  There was nothing particularly difficult about the install - it was merely a bit fiddly at some points.
The air compressor trick worked amazingly well, but the trick was figuring out how to do it right.  Once you do, the grip blows up and slides off.

The fairings were annoying because the right side doesn't fit precisely the same as the left.  There is a very slight gap between the upper fairing and the the headlight cowl/assembly.  This drove me nuts and took the most time of the whole process.

All in all, not nearly as difficult as I had feared.  And holy crap do those grips get hot!  The default high setting is 5 or 6 (I haven't checked), and it's painfully hot.  I can't imagine having it set to 10!  I'm pretty sure that's 1st degree burns territory.

    Thanks for the encouragement!
  7. I've been slacking on the updates. In the last couple weeks:

    1) 40mm mirror extenders
    2) gold and black adjustable levers
    3) heated grips
    4) backrest pad for my Shad SH39 top case which they failed to ship the first time
    5) adjusted my shifter and brake so I can ride with my boots and not be such a squid with hikers - I had no idea it was so easy

Up until now I haven't done much work on my bikes. I did the riding and let the shop do the work. But with this bike, I've been trying to take on more work myself. It certainly helps me get to know my ride better.

Pics when I stop being a lazy bum.
  8. I tested this and found the wobble started at about 170km/h (I have side and top cases and a puig touring screen, for reference). It's definitely disconcerting, but I'd have bigger problems if I chose to spend any time at that kind of speed - namely, losing my license because that will get you a "stunt driving" ticket. That involves extremely stiff penalties like losing your license for 2 years (both motorcycle AND car), and a minimum of doubling insurance rates. A second conviction can result in jail time and a 10 year license suspension. All this just from being clocked at over 50km/h over the posted speed limit.

Needless to say, I have no interest in making a habit of exceeding 150km/h at any point.
  9. As Jim mentioned the horror stories abound regarding Yammer's ability to fulfill these accessory orders. Took my dealer 2 months for the hard bags and 3 months on the grips. Like he mentioned, my dealer was up front about the backorder delays, so I knew up front what I was looking at. I was OK with the estimated times but agree it's still annoying as hell it should take so freaking long for this. I really wanted the the bags & grips from Yamaha though so was willing to wait, and I was not disappointed in them. My dealer, OTH... well that's another story...
Wow, I feel for everyone having to wait...that must make you crazy!
To provide a counterpoint, however, I ordered my heated grips a couple weeks ago from my dealer and they arrived within two days.  I don't know if this is a Yamaha Canada vs USA thing or if my dealer has a second party OEM supplier or what.
  10. I like the way you think!
II just couldn't take off the handsavers plastic that hits the windshield, I just can't handle how ugly they look, I did in all fairness order the Puig handsavers to stop any issues with the oem handsavers.
I talked to Puig USA and they said the hand protectors are still in development, and they'll be available Nov/Dec.  I'll definitely be buying a set when they are available.  I think it does lose something with the superficial deflectors removed, but I honestly don't notice a huge difference, at least with those nasty silver screws blacked out.
  11. My Puig windscreen is out on delivery as I write this post. I'll pick it up after work and get some pics going, as well as provide initial impressions. I'm pretty pumped, it looks great in pictures.
I'm really looking forward to your impressions, I truly feel it has been the biggest and most positive addition I've made to the bike.
I have posted a mini review in the windshields section now.  I'm very impressed and it's super quiet, but it is so good at reducing wind that it's too hot for summer riding.
  12. We are seemingly on the last heat wave of the season, so I'll definitely appreciate it for the chilly fall mornings that are quickly incoming. I'll buy a shorty summer shield next year.

The only thing is I wish it was a quick release screen to make switching easier. As it is, I have to remove the screen, remove the mount, reattach the plastic stock mount, then attach whatever other screen to the stock mounting points. Not the end of the world, but it means I won't be switching back and forth except between seasons.
  13. TL,DR:

IMHO the Puig Touring windscreen is the end-all-be-all of touring screens for this bike.  Total noise elimination and zero buffeting put it beyond my expectations.  The down side is that the reduction in air flow is so complete that it is not ideal for riding in very hot conditions.

    Now for the full review:

I received my Puig Touring windscreen from bs-motoparts.  The order took 7 business days (ordered late Friday, August 21 and received Tuesday, September 1), and everything was as expected.

The box was mildly crushed but there was no damage to the contents.

I had to remove the plastic fairing piece that the stock windshield mounts directly to (sorry this pic is kind of over exposed)

Those pictures are in the high position.  I put it to the lowest position and went riding.

I used the test ride to go get a replacement 3mm hex key, because mine wandered off.  I went to get this because I needed to take the hand guard fairings off - they hit the windshield which severely limits driveway manoeuvres, and I am not a fan of worrying about such things.

I got home and, as I was about to remove the hand guard fairings, I realized one of the bolts had come out.  This would only happen to ME!  I guess when I bumped the piece against the windshield as I found its limits while backing out of the driveway, it loosened the bolt which vibrated until it fell out during the ride.  I somehow didn't have a replacement among my myriad random bolts....back to the hardware store I went, with the guards removed for the time being.

I came back, hex bolts in hand, and fixed up the hand guards.  I got some black bolt caps to lose the ugly silver screw look.

    bozTWOA.jpg

    And we're done.

Now for my thoughts on the windshield...

First, some details: I am 5'9" tall with a 32" inseam.  The seat is set to the high position, and the windshield wound up in the high position.  I can see over the shield up to approximately 12-15 feet in front of the bike.  I didn't measure the vertical heights of everything.

In short, the windshield is almost TOO effective.  With the visor open on my helmet, there is zero wind noise - it's almost eerie.  With the visor closed, there is a very small amount of noise but barely noticeable let alone problematic.  The reason I say it's almost too effective is that I now get absolutely no airflow on my body, and that makes it freaking HOT since it was 31 celsius and a billion percent humidity during the ride.  This is not a summer shield.  I was a huge fan of riding with my visor open at night and not getting bugs on my riding glasses.  I have a tinted/mirrored visor so this is really great.

I tested the shield up to 140km/h and had no issues at any point.  Even at 140km/h I was able to leave the visor open without any issues.

    The verdict:
    - Buffeting elimination 10/10
    - Noise reduction 10/10
    - Aesthetics 9/10, as far as touring shields go
    - Build Quality 8.5/10, feels good, much thicker than stock, but the lip visibly flaps in the wind a bit (though not at all concerningly and still significantly less than the stock shield)

Between this and my heated grips and hand deflectors, cold/winter riding will be fantastic!  I'll be much more keen to commute on the bike during the shoulder seasons when it's ice cold in the mornings but nice during the day.

Further thoughts:  Anyone taller than me would find it noisier than I did - if I raise myself an inch I start to get noise.  However, I had the seat in the high position so there's maybe 2" of room above my head before the noise starts.  Someone taller than 6" would need the additional clip on to totally eliminate noise.  These number assume inseam-to-height ratio is the same as mine, of course.

I'm happy to answer any questions!

  14. Every time I shift into sixth gear, it's so loud I keep thinking it's a siren from an emergency vehicle.....a British one from the 1960's, but still it's weird.

This is by far the noisiest drive train I've ever experienced. Every gear has it's own strange noise.

  16. I agree the hand guards from puig look really good with the windshield.  I wanted to order them but they are not carried by BS motorsports, where I had to order the screen.  I have not found anywhere to buy them.
I had the same problem I order directly from a PUIG distributor.
*sigh* I've contacted both Canadian distributors, directly contacted Puig USA, and scoured the internet.  No responses or results yet.  Maybe availability will improve next year...
  17. They do hit the windshield, when doing garage maneuvers, but in normal day to day riding they don't. I did remove them while installing it, but it looked so ugly I went ahead and put them back on and see how bad it was, and it's acceptable, at least to me they are far from intruding in any riding maneuver, and I just try to be careful in the garage.
Anyway, I did order the handsavers from puig, I really like how they look.

I don't have the exact distance but in the puig site they measure it at 64cm from top to bottom and 41 at the widest part of the screen.

Riding review, first I have to be honest, I HATED the OEM screen, I'm 171 (5"7ish) and use an AGV ax8 dual carbon so it has a beak, and I couldn't find any position in which the standard screen wasn't a nightmare, I ended up removing the beak from the helmet and dropping the screen to it's lowest setting, deafening wind noise, but at least the turbulence wasn't killing me, it was still awful.

So any change would be a welcome one, and to be honest this screen is the best thing I've done to the fj, my life is happier, my neck relaxed and my helmet has its beak back, it's still at the lowest position, about an inch under my eyes, wind turbulence is gone, the flow hits me right on top of my head, I can use the visor semi open and no wind gets in my eyes, just the pleasure of the open road and not having to deal with fog.

Wind noise levels have dropped significantly, I'm starting to think the fairing has a lot to do with it, but my hearing is safe (still use ear plugs most of the time) but it's on par with the wind noise on my k50.

I'm pretty much in love with the damn thing, that piece of plastic changed drastically my life on board of the fj.

So would I recommended? Let me put it this way, knowing what I know now, I would've ordered the windshield before buying the bike, so I'd have it the day they delivered my fj, it's the best mod, and the most dramatic change I've felt on any bike (25 years riding, 30+ bikes, thousands of mods) I love the fj but had no place for it, I have a bike for long hauls, a naked bike to act stupid & scooter to run errands around town, I bought the fj for short distance touring. The first time I tried to do some light touring on the FJ the thing tried to rip my head off, now if there isn't any off road I'll take the fj over the K50 every time.

A bit on the dramatic side I know, but I really loved the bike and hated with every fiber of my being the standard screen...

I notice you didn't remove the hand protector deflector piece, which the instructions say to do. Do they clear the shield or interfere? I have one incoming and I'd like to leave them on if they don't interfere.
