  1. Mounted the new ProTaper EVO Adventure High handlebars, Billet shorty black adjustable levers, Oxford Adventure heated grips and removed my stock handguards. Replacing them with Barkbusters Storm handguards for better coverage. I changed to the new ProTapers to help alleviate some pain in my shoulder. As most of you remember I was hit from the right-rear back in May of 2015 on my 33 day old FJ-09 by a big SUV. Suffering 3 broken bones in my left foot, 2 broken bones in my left ankle, a shet-ton of road rash, 2 finger knuckles and a wrist ground to the bone, and worst of all my right shoulder had dislocated tearing my rotator cuff, destroying my long head bicep tendon and destroying 25% of the cartilage in my shoulder joint. After surgeries 10 months ago I have been left with a fused left foot and a frozen right shoulder with limited and painful movement. But hell that won't stop me from riding!!! I mostly ride my Ural sidecar rig. The bars are low and swept back. perfect for my arm. My Roadliner 1900 is imposable for me to ride. can't raise my are high enough to control the bike. my other bike have lower, narrow, swept back bars so I can ride them to. Now My FJ-09 has been giving me fits. The bar was forward enough to have to make me reach and raise my are to its very limit. But worst off is that I have no rotation in the joint. So I am unable to relax my arm and let it hang naturally and/or comfortably. So the ProTaper EVO Adventure bars raise up, pull back, and offer more sweep to the controls enough to make life a little more bearable. Not perfect, but doable. I had to reroute my clutch cable. and on my throttle cables I just rotated the cable entrances to below the front brake lever, and of course readjusted the electric lines a little. My biggest problem has been able to ride more than an hour. I'm hoping the new bars will extend that.
Wow that sounds rough but good for you for mot giving up on riding! Any pics of the Ural?
  2. I have an update!
My first experience with this National Cycle Sport/Touring was sort of weird.  I moved it up and down.  In the highest position the huge freaking hand guards (?) rubbed against the screen severely  limiting handlebar movement.  I also had my old Nolan N102 on.  Like someone here mentioned, at high speeds I got a slight buffeting.  Yeah, it was annoying.

Since then I've had nothing but perfection!  What's my secret?  Well, I started by putting the screen all the way down and left it there.  I have been riding with my new helmet, a Kali Carbon Blackness rockstar of a helmet.  The thing is a work of art.

I've put over 300 miles on with this helmet and windshield combo.  Zero buffeting.  No noticeable turbulence that I can remember.  With my cheapo earplugs in it's as quiet as I think is possible on a motorcycle.

    I'm 5'8".  Loving this eff-jay
I'm surprised to hear that your handguards are making contact with the windscreen. The molds are perfect on both models that I have. Have you modified the angle of the handguards or modified them in any way?
  3. When I bought my FZ6R back in the days I went on a mission about windscreen. The stock one was horrible with buffering. Options were very limited since it was a new model so I bough some lexan and start testing different size and shape of screen. Anywhere from 14" up to 24"!!! It was expensive and quite a leaning experience...
What I conclude from the experience was size don't matter! I end up going much smaller and testing with laminar lip style add on... that did work great! I end up getting a smaller screen after a while since Puig came up with a really nice tinted touring screen. I added a MRA lip that is totally adjustable and doesn't look too bad. It comes with 2 type of attachments, you can either drill your screen and use the hardware they supply or a clamp style and doesn't not require any drilling. I did a 5500 miles trip last summer with this setup and it work like magic!

Not sure what works best for the FJ but the bottom line is bigger is not necessary better. A smaller screen with a MRA lip could be a better option?
I would much prefer to have a shorter windscreen that I look over than through. I thought about the MRA blade but I was pretty surprised at how expensive they are and I couldn't find anyone that had used it on the FJ. I've spent enough money for now so I'll stick with the screen that I have for now but keep an eye out for reviews to see if this will be a better option.
  4. Sunday evening I did my first oil/filter change at 500 miles and then added the following:
    Yamaha rear rack
Yamaha 50L top case with backrest
Swapped the VStream Sport/Tour windscreen for the Touring model
    Motocentric 14L magnetic tank bag

On Tuesday UPS delivered a new Schuberth C3 Pro helmet that I had ordered from Chaparral. After mounting the Sena 20S to it I rode out to Seat Concepts and had the seat redone. After they finished the seat I rode the Palm to Pines highway and then out to the Salton Sea. Unfortunately after about an hour of riding I realized that it was just too small. I've never experienced forehead and ear pain like I did on this ride. I figured that the helmet would slowly break-in as I rode but the pain just increased. All together I rode for 8.5 hours and did 300 miles. I was miserable from the tight helmet and didn't stop to take many pictures! I had gone into Chaparral to try helmets on and the medium seemed to fit the best. I like my helmets to be somewhat tight as I know that they stretch out after a while. I called Chaparral and they explained that the helmets on display have been tried on thousands of times and and are beyond broken in. I should have bought a large but the good news is that the shell size is the same between the two so I simply ordered new cheek pads and a liner. I just received those today so hopefully once I get them installed it will fit okay. The helmet is very quiet!

  5. So I finally got my VStream Touring windscreen installed and it's a good improvement over the Sport/Tour model in my opinion. The windscreen is just tall enough to eliminate all buffeting. It blocks all air in front of me but leaves a good amount of air on my arms. At first I was a little disappointed by this but I think it will be appreciated in the warmer months.

I also read somewhere in these forums that the stock handguards had to be removed or adjusted because they made contact with the windscreen at full lock. This is not the case with either the Sport/Tour or the Touring model.

  6. I installed the VStream Sport/Tour windscreen and although it's much better than the stock one I'm still getting a significant amount of buffeting. I don't want to say that I'm disappointed with it but it doesn't reduce the buffeting nearly as much as I had hoped. At lower speeds (below 50 MPH) I can ride comfortably with my faceshield up which is very nice although at freeway speeds the buffeting and wind noise is really bad. On the freeway here in California (lots of traffic) it feels like I'm getting hit from wind from all directions! I was really surprised how bad it was. I later found an empty stretch of road and got up to about 75 MPH and it's much better than the freeway of course but the wind noise and buffeting is still very noticeable. I'm 5'9" and i found that if I ducked my head an inch or two it pretty much went away so I'm thinking that the Touring model would have eliminated this. I regret not getting the Touring model but I still may before my 1000 mile trip at the end of the month.
I'm sorry to hear that you aren't happy with your V-Stream Sport/Tour model of screen, especially after you seemed excited to get yours after my review. You said that if you ducked your head an inch or two, the buffeting went away. So I am wondering if you had it set in the highest position, if that would have made a big difference? Or maybe the Touring screen is just the one that you need. Anyway, sorry for the disappointment!! I still love mine, and it works perfectly for me. Good luck!!I'm not unhappy with it I had just hoped for better protection on the freeway. Most of my riding will be on side streets and in that case the Sport/Tour model is a big improvement over stock. I'm just concerned about my upcoming trip which will require a lot of highway miles. I have the Touring model on order so we'll see if it's any better once I get it installed. Please don't feel the need to apologize. I realize that we all have different opinions and we don't all ride in the same environments so any review is subjective. With that being said I would much rather have the Sport/Tour model than the stock windscreen!

I started with the Touring Model. It really is effective at eliminating all noise and buffeting. But I found it very unpleasant having to look through the screen and in rather strong wind I felt it negatively affected the bike's stability. I replaced it with the Sport Touring (medium) one. It is somewhat better than the OEM screen. My advice is that you should not expect massive improvements from any screen. I'm 5'8".
I ordered the Touring model earlier so I'm interested to see how different it is. The top of the Sport/Tour model (in the highest setting) is right at eye level which I didn't mind until I got into the twisties. It wasn't bad but took a little getting used to.

Soon I'll be doing a dual headlight mod and installing some spotties.

Looks good, especially that last picture! How did you mount the GPS? Can you share any photos of how you did it? I'd like to move my Ram X-grip up there if possible.
  10. I had the CalSci screen for over six months. Although I was happy with it as far as wind blocking and buffeting, I didn't really like it's looks. I recently bought two new screens from National Cycle called the V-Stream. I had previous experience with them when I had my FJR-1300, and loved the V-Stream screen I had on it. So I was really glad when they made new ones for the FJ-09. They have three sizes, the "sport' which is H-12" (30.5cm) by W-12.75" (32.4cm) dark tint, the "sport/tour" which is H-15.75" (40cm) by W-16" (40.6cm) light gray tint, and the "touring" which is H-17.25" (43.8cm) by W-17.5" (44.4cm) clear. I bought the sport and the sport/tour versions and tested them out this past week, since Northern California has been having perfect riding temperatures the last couple of weeks. I loved the looks of the sport version with it's dark tint, but there was some wind buffeting when riding at freeway speeds. It still works better than the stock screen though by far. I might use it in the summer when temps in the valley are high, and the wind will feel better to cool me down, since I always ride in full gear. But I absolutely love the sport/tour version!! It looks fantastic, and has virtually no buffeting. I am 6'0" and have it set in the low position, and it works perfectly. I have no report for the touring version, but I'm sure that it is even better if using it for long trips, or extensive freeway riding. They have their own bracket to mount to the OEM frame, but it is easy, and anybody can do it in minutes. The prices are okay on the National Cycle website, but I found them on eBay for a lot less.Anyway, I just wanted to put my two-cents in on some great screens!!

Thanks for the review. I have the sport/tour on order and it should arrive on Thursday. I can't wait to get it installed and get rid of the buffeting. I went back and forth between the sport/tour and touring models but the touring model just looked too big but I was worried that the sport/tour wouldn't be tall enough to eliminate the buffeting. Thanks for the confirmation.
  11. I love the Givi Top case soooooo much more than the side bags. This is my 5th top case and is the first mod for any bike I buy. I can barely fit 1 pair of riding pants in a side case. The Givi never leaves the bike. Givi takes the bike from a toy to functional transportation. May not look great but I ride 8 times more per year when I have a giviThat's good tpo

That's good to hear. I just picked up the side cases today but since no one seems to stock the top cases I wasn't sure just how big they are. In some pictures they look absolutely massive but not so much in others. It looks good on your bike and that's a decent size case.
  12. How is the quality of the FJ bags to the FJR bags? I read a few comments when the FJ-09 was first released that the bags weren't the best quality but I've always heard good things about the FJR bags. This thread seems to indicate that other than the lid the bags may be the same?
