  1. Changed out the radiator fluid, and cleaned the radiator.........
Re-installing the white overflow bottle was a pain in the ass, next time I think I will leave it installed and just use suction to get the fluid out and put fresh antifreeze back in.

    Next up is brake fluid
I think several of us had our battles with the reservoir bottle and its collars. I walked away from it three times before "luck" allowed me to finalize reassembly. Getting the collars back in proper place was my challenge.
  2. I see the event in Shasta is this weekend. I still have boxes of parts for those little rascals which I'm sure are in high demand. Would love to find a good useful place for them. If you know of anyone, please PM me. I have a long list of part #'s and descriptions someplace.
  3. Was the Datsun part of the group? So much potential... huh.png . I know... I know... but it's only just one wheel more than the Niken, and way better looking. tongue.png

Yes, it is part of the group. It was sitting in some guy’s backyard for 17 years, and we went down and rescued it a few years ago. It’s being improved slowly but surely.
Ooops, getting off topic BUT, great little cars. Heres the 69 2000 I restored years back. Also had a 67 1/2 low windshield 2000. Lots of fun on those trips.

  4. Flushed cooling system and replaced coolant. Had my turn struggling with which collar went where on the reservoir cover. Changed engine oil & filter, degrunged, cleaned and lubed chain, lubed clutch cable then cut off oil pan fin and installed Mazda flat drain plug. I also installed SW Motech Engage tank bag and SW Motech EVO GPS gadget for Engage bag. Finally I researched Bagster and Top Sellerie seats. Time for a new one.
  5. Forks on their way to Traxxion Dynamics. Shock is still in there, but I have a Penske on order from Traxxion. When it arrives, the stocker will go in the trash bin where it belongs.
Anxious to see a write up once you get it all dialed in. Are you replacing the OEM caps for compression adjustment or does Traxxion now include them with the AK-20 kit? If I'm not mistaken, I think there's an option but I haven't spoken to Traxxion about it on the FJ-09.
  6. I got my Givi SV201 soft bags from ebay for 90 bucks no shipping no tax. They fit the FJ nicely, they are on the small size but with a top box you will have plenty room for any excursion.
Was that new or used? I looked on eBay and they are over $150. Thanks!
I got a new set off fleabay last year from a private party for same price with shipping. I think they've been discontinued but still readily available.
  7. Do you need to install some hardware to keep the bags from rubbing om the tires?
No, Givi SV201 do not need additional hardware brackets. But I do recommend adjusting them up high. You can also use bungee's to pull the two carry
handles together and with the tops pulled towards each other, the
bottoms will never bounce in towards the tire. I carry a small tool
pouch on the passenger's seat between the two bags and the bungee also
holds this in place so it works out well for me. These aren't OEM so one should plan just a bit of tinkering, as with most soft bags, to get them the way you want. Four bungee cords supplied that I adjusted the length and ends on to fit how I wanted. They're on and off the bike in one or two minutes. Very simple.

  8. Those are the bags that I will be going with. I really like soft bags and they don't break when you low side or drop the bike. And the reflection is an awesome safety feature.

The rear peg brackets are the primary tie down points and rear grab handles removed so the bags can ride higher, avoiding rear tire rub. I ended up using black tape on contact points to avoid rub through on painted surfaces under rear seat. I have Givi Monokey E21, E360 set up but waiting for a better mount kit I guess. So these are working reasonably well. I like the nighttime reflective protection also and their lighter then a hard luggage system which is nice. I believe they're discontinued and might be getting a bit harder to find. I see Competition Accessories still lists them link, Givi SV201's but I think there were two sizes. I got the smaller ones and only had to expand them once so far. So plenty of room. Also added Kuryakyn link license plate attachment for helmet lock. There's always better, or soon will be, but the system has worked well for my needs.

  9. You do not need to remove the tank.  You need to remove the vent hoses, then just swing the tank 180 degrees around and set on the seats or on a towel placed where the seat was or on the passenger seat.  This worked on the FZ and on the FJ when doing the TBS at 600m.  You may have to undo the electrical connection.
Yep, and I did undo the electrical connection to turn the tank. Then hooked it back up to start the bike. I left the high pressure line connected. It's flexible enough to turn the tank without causing any problems IMO.

  10. For dual sport and winter street (FJ) riding I currently have and like Sidi Canyon Goretex. They have a flexible Vibram sole, very comfortable, waterproof membrane, great to walk in and keep your feet warm and dry. But they don't quite offer the protection I'd like and pretty warm for hot summers. For just street summer (FJ) road riding I like Sidi Vertigo Air's. They have a stiffer sole and body, very cool temp wise, also very comfortable and light weight. But not quite the flexibility and walking comfort I enjoy with the Canyon's as they are strictly a street/track boot but still not a full out race. Their also not waterproof but I can wrap up my feet in trash bag if caught in serious rain. The two combinations cover all my on and off road riding.

If I ever have to get a replacement pair, Sidi's last forever and their Vibram soles are replaceable, I believe I'd replace the Canyon's with Sidi Armada GoreTex. Vibram sole that's almost flat enough for off road, waterproof, comfortable and better then average protection. Probably a bit stiff during break in but I understand they soften up well after walking in them awhile. I'm sure they'd be too warm for my summers though. I ride low 20's during winters and the first few digits over 100 during summers.

  11. With 4850 miles on the bike I decided it  was a good time to start tweaking the suspension a bit, even though I suspect that in the long run the best answer will be updated fork components and a new shock (and that will wait until until another budget cycle). Today's task was to experiment with softening the preload settings. I'm about 166 pounds and a recent 10 day trip with 55 pounds of camping gear suggested the default preload was too much. Disclaimer: although I understand suspension components and adjustments in the abstract, when it comes to putting that information into practice, I'm a noob. In other words, I don't think any of my conclusions break any new ground

I set mine @ 6 1/2 notches out from full in on the front for 195 lb rider weight and 20 lbs of gear to get 30% sag. Should be a good starting point to get you where you want it with 220 lbs payload. I forget what I set the rear at. I'll let you know.
Rear I have on notch #5. Looks like a total of 6 notches which I will use #6 for longer then weekend rides with additional gear. The increments between the full notches I've not used.
Here are good reads from other members and their settings:link

Thanks for the info panooch. I need to go see if my heated grips are setup the same. Post by cbr600 on July 4, 2015 at 8:12am

Regarding the Universal Vista Cruise: I put one on mine, but it moved the brake lever to the left and throttle to the right and left a 2 finger operation for the brake

Your welcome. Please note, I do not have heated grips installed, OEM or aftermarket. Redfjniner I believe does have heated grips.

  14. Panooch, any comments on the vista cruise installation? I had only seen it without the hand guards.
You can see a photo in the thread "Throttle Lock" found here.  link dated June 12 th.
I was unable to get it to work at first but backslider said he got his to work with the standard drain hole in the throttle cable housing lower cover. He was right. It works fine and thank you backslider. My hand guards are on, though photo does not show them clearly. There are different versions of the Vista Cruise. Use this one which backslider also provided the info on. link

I ground down my engagement lever, knob, for personal preference. Have a tendency to put my thumb down on the L bracket while riding and the knob was sticking out too far. Photo shows the L bracket not completely pushed onto the screw. It backed off after hitting it with my hand yesterday. I need to put star washers top and bottom to keep it in place better.

I know I blew the bike off after yesterdays ride. Missed the right bar side though.
