It may work very well for you. I'm 5'7" with a 30" inseam, and would like my CalSci shorty to be about 1" lower to be in clean air. Seems like your torso is 1.5" shorter than mine so... let me know how it works out! 8-) (before I try cutting down my screen.)Just pulled the trigger on the Shorty CalSci. I'm 5'6" with a 30.5" inseam. I'll let you know how it works out. The turbulence on top of my helmet from any position on the OEM screen about drives me mad!
<edit> I got that bass ackwards! If your torso is shorter, you'll likely get more turbulence than I do.

And they turned it into a cafe racer? Sacrilege! O_o To each their own I guess...deerSlayer: Nope. I was certain it was from the race bike! It was the two stroke. Bettencourt's
The only mods the previous owner (a friend) did was replace the battery with a capacitor (kick start only bike anyway), and install Jolly Moto exhaust.
Current owner (also a friend) is doing a complete rebuild, and installed modern wheels (17" front, and wider rear.)

I believe you're thinking of a different Honda 400.
I feel validated as a biker - I told my wife it was for a Honda 400! Great little bikes. Lot's of people turned them into cafe racers...Yes. It came with a Honda NS400R. That question is over 2 months old (Jan 20 post!)
I may cut down the CalSci shorty/low even lower, not sure yet.
The NS400R is a mid 80's V-3 two stroke race replica:

Thanks. Hand guards are not a problem, I already removed them completely. I don't like the look of the Yamaha guards, and they are very wide. The first thing that attracted me to the Madstad screen is it's wider at the base.I rode over & purchased a kit which I got for 20% off for cash & local pick up. Won't be able to tell you more as my FJ is still crated in New York. Won't pick it up till the end of April when I return to the frozen north after wintering in Florida. Didn't appear to be too difficult to switch between screens. You did notice that you have to remove the outer hand guard cover to fit the Madstad screen right? -
Did you ride over to Madstad yet?Gonna ride over to Madstad to look at their kit this coming week. Saw it mounted on a bike in a dealership here in Zephyrhills, Florida. Madstad is located in Dade City, Florida, next town North.
They now show an 18" version for the FJ-09, might work well for my multi-day rides (I'm 5' 7".)
I'm curious about how easy it would be switch back and forth between the 18" Madstad, and my current CalSci shorty (which I may cut down shorter.)
-
Excellent, thanks for that! Yes, more pics please!
I'll be doing this installation too, and I suck at this type of work...
BTW, nice Freudian slip in the subject title!

Yeah, only got mine home because I have an enclosed trailer.I go one further. My bike is bought and paid for and still sitting on the dealer's floor due to 2 feet of snow on the ground. I can't even tinker with it yet. lol

WTH are you people arguing about bike colour, don't you understand some of us have a really serious problem: new FJ-09 in the garage for over a month, never ridden it, and I have serious PMS!! (Parked Motorcycle Syndrome) It's -23 C this morning, -35 with the wind. ARRRRRRG!!
Yeah people, answer the poll! Do you have fast grey or slow red?I chose the matte grey.
Ok, I feel a little bit better now.

I hope to use my RKA 17 ltr (6 + 11 expansion), just for tools and a water bottle, and of course the map window for directions (only turn on my GPS for detours or when lost!) Only fish for the water when stopped. I only use the expansion for food at/near end of a day's ride when camping.
This is a little Cortec 11L Mini, not made anymore, that worked, and stays on fine. The best location as when you open the top, the angle makes it harder to use and stuff can fall out. Not good if you are fishing in there when you are riding.Thread drift: magnetic tank bag. Did you do the ULEWZ glued magnets mod? ( http://fj-09.org/thread/255/use-magnetic-tank-bag-plastic )
If not, how well does the bag stay on?
I'd love an expandable ADV style bag: low at front, high at back, so the map window is level. But nobody makes them with magnetic attachment, just with straps.
This is my first bike with a sloping gas tank in a lonnnnng time: Yam XS400 Special in 1979.

Yes. Yamaha makes that clear on the first page of the manual (2nd pic in my Jan 31 post.)Er... Scanning a 'legit' version is still copyright infringement. Not sure why you think it wouldn't be.
-
I'll probably have the whole index memorized before my first ride. Two months of reading without riding, damn winter! BTW, the manual's description of theory of the complete braking system including ABS is excellent. Even if you never plan to work on your FJ-09, get the service manual. You'll have a much better understanding of how everything works.
You just print out the pages. You can also do searches in a PDF, try that with paper.I'll probably hit the groups and IRC for it eventually, but while I'm a big fan of ebooks, it's hard to use a laptop or ipad while you're working on something. Dunno, maybe it's just me.

I think the bound manual was CDN $140. About US $111.

539 page bound manual. Better descriptive text than my Triumph manual. http://i.imgur.com/c5VG3pY.jpg
That seems odd. Unless the manual is in something like a loose leaf, 3 ring binder format I don't get how they could print copies on demand...but what do I know. Please describe what you get.I ordered mine Saturday (Jan 24) at my dealer. He said it would be in in about week to 10 days, and claimed they are printed when ordered. My dealer is small, although they also sell Suzuki and MV Agusta.
They finished it just before the bike's release:http://i.imgur.com/ncKMduN.jpg
Seems like it was printed in Canada:http://i.imgur.com/2kCFVwl.jpg

I'm not a fan of the matte grey 'colour', nor the batwing hand guards, but that very shorty opaque windscreen really ties it all together! Are you going to paint the upper fork tubes matte grey/black too?
Oh dear god, what has this board come to!?!?!?!? Blasphemy!!!Got rid of the windshield.

Interesting. Doesn't seem wider from the pictures. As long as it clears the hand guards, But if it's made for the bike, it obviously does.Yea its the Cal Sci and yea its in the high position. I really like it. I like that its a little wider than the stock and since its not as high the air hitting your helmet is clear. I was disliking the buffeting of the stock windscreen and this one seems better. Did almost 100 miles today. I'm up to 700 and change.
Scroll down a bit to the table. Compare the widths to the stock shield.

Installed the CalSci dark short windshield (See Garage -> Parts and Accessory Reviews -> windshield options)

All pics taken with shield in lowest position!
CalSci dark shorty installed (random white areas on shield from fluorescent lights, except the label saying "tighten to maximum 4 ft-lb"):

Note that the CalSci shield does not go as low down as the Yamaha shield. No ride review until spring, when I get my first ride with my bike! :-S

To me the CalSci attachment hardware (screw + plastic holder + grommet + aluminum spacer + cap) seems better quality than the Yamaha hardware (screw - that's it!)
Yes, my garage is *extremely* untidy! Bonus to anyone who can spot a partial glimpse (in 2 photos) of a rare Honda accessory (came with bike only available a few years in 80's in Canada, never in the USA.)

I stayed a day in Big Bend mid-late April 2007. Temperature was about mid 90's.Coming to you from San Antonio, just minutes away from the Texas Hill Country a great place to ride and a good ride away from Big Bend National Park. Weather in the area is ride able year round just don't go to Big Bend May through September when it is hotter than a firecracker. Today 1/20 its gonna be 75 degrees.
I remember a 2-lane road with a 75 mph speed limit! (#90 ?)

Ok, then I did not bring my new red FJ-09 home today. ;-) Roads were clear and it was a balmy -10 C, good enough for an enclosed trailer ride....
If there are no pictures, it didn't happen.Today installed front fender extender.

I ordered the CalSci short shield too, I also like clean air. Thanks for the link! I ordered the tinted short shield since i like clean air. I'll also post up pics when it's installed later this week
Had a small issue trying to order online. I live in Canada near the US border so it's easier & cheaper to have stuff shipped to The UPS Store at the border. The CalSci site supports a separate delivery address, but had an issue with zipcode vs postal code. I emailed CalSci, they replied right away with a solution. Got it ordered, they shipped it same day. Very professional!
