  1. "Good call Bobdog, I took the Luray-Warrenton roads this weekend too, except I was in the car, not the bike, and thought the same thing, great roads!
Saw a bunch of bikes, especially ADV and Sport Touring, no FJ's though I would have obviously noticed!"

THAT'S BECAUSE MINE'S THE FASTER STEALTH GREY...
    "Stealth grey" you say... (rofl)

  2. A quick fun loop for you guys in NOVA - Rode out to Front Royal, linked up with a buddy there (Custom HD 103 Police Special) then went to Exit 13, and added a rider (Triumph 1050 triple) to the group. ROUTE: Head for the BRP, but stay to the right and take 340 to 675/678 down to Luray - Lunch - Back out 211 east from Luray to Warrenton, then reenter suburbia and take 15/29 north to 66. This cut my time on 66. There's paving work on 211 on the east side of the ridge, so you may have to wait 10 minutes or so. Fun ride - lots of twisties and long sweepers. Didn't check the odometer trambo, but I think 225 round trip from right near 495.
Good call Bobdog, I took the Luray-Warrenton roads this weekend too, except i was in the car, not the bike, and thought the same thing, great roads!

  3. to Northern Virginia (suburbs of D.C.) where people don't really have time to ride.
Whoa whoa whoa, I ride, every single day! Only thing that ever stops me is snow or ice!  :D
hehe okay yeah that wasn't fair, let me re-phrase that; In my experience from when I lived in NoVA, I didn't have time to ride! (rofl)
  4. dvinny13, yes VA has some great roads, maybe you don't see many bikes because this state differs vastly from rural areas near where you are, where you probably see a few cruisers, to where I am in Hampton Roads, a lot of military and govt. so loads of sports and cruiser bikes, to Richmond where they have a large retro/cafe and adventure scene, to Northern Virginia (suburbs of D.C.) where people don't really have time to ride.

Let us know when you return with the FJ!
  5. I've just started noticing that on every heavy acceleration from stop or quick start with a turn the traction control light flashes. I mean every time... Is this normal? I'm not a psycho rider and I'm talking maybe 70% power on takeoff.
Wouldn't be able to tell you if it's normal, because I don't think I ever accelerate heavily from a stop into a turn. Can you give an example? It's certainly not normal for 70% acceleration in a straight line.
  6. Did some motocamping in Gore, VA this weekend with some Triumph friends, the gray Bonnie is the new 1200 version.

First time really taking the FJ on fire trails, it handled everything in it's stride and carried a full set of camping gear effortlessly.

  7. Just to be sure, is it also at high speeds? I live near the german Autobahn, so I reach 110mph and sometimes more, quite a lot lol.
Yes, it is perfectly fine in that range.
The beak is also functional, as well as aesthetic, although it doesn't create a noticeable down force at high speeds, or protect the rider and headlight from debris and splashes, or even increase the efficiency of the engine by channeling more airflow into the radiator...where this product really shines is standing a drink on at the gas station/camping, and placing your tools on when working on the bike! :D

  8. I tried the same thing, although only opened the rear of the can, not the whole system.

Steel is not too thick and it bends easily. However, it is lined with another layer of perforated steel though, so when you bend it back the two pieces have distorted so that it mis-aligns the surfaces.
  9. Modded the stock exhaust on my 2016 FJ-09 this weekend following the directions already provided so far in this excellent thread! Highlights:
    • Removed and re-installed without removing the center stand—key to this is to un-screw the radiator hoses (two screws, takes 2 mins) as pictured below. This frees up the manifold for easier maneuvering.
    • Opened chamber and removed the “s-curve” pipe with a 4” cut-off tool
    • Added extra hole from the cat chamber into the rear chamber with a 1 ½” hole saw
    • Outlet pipe kept stock, ECU stock
    • Got a friend to weld it back up
Very happy with the mod, it’s a much deeper tone and overall a little louder, but not too much to make it obnoxious. Feels like it removes some of the jerkiness a little too in A and STD modes. No pop on decel, but does give a nice rumble that wasn’t there before.
    Time: 3-4 hours
Cost: If you have the tools and can weld, $0

  10. Um, Dude... the 2" version is what everyone on here is talking about.  If it's too long for you, that's too bad; seems to work "perfectly" for everyone else.  Not sure if they offer a shorter version, but I think they do.  And yes, the listing clearly states that it is each, not a pair for that price.

Edit: Disregard my last post broheim, my second one came in the mail I realized how you must be using it, and it works great! Thanks for posting a much better-priced option!

  11. Decent turn out for a ride from Yorktown, VA to Bikes at the Bottom in Richmond on Sunday. We had a Sportster, Bonnie, Wee Strom, FZ-09, two FJ-09's and a ZR-7S, as always, pics (vid) or it didn't happen:

  12. Rodan, I'll be VERY interested in your report on the bead seat. My butt and the stock seat are not compatible, but my budget and the aftermarket seats are even less compatible!
In addition to the bead set (great idea!) you might also find my past post about the Cal Sci DIY seat mod interesting:

Modified the stock rider and passenger seats with memory foam as per California Scientific's instruction guide found here:

First try left some visible edges under the seat cover, so I went back and smoothed the edges with scissors and added some duct tape to the seams:

Looks stock, but the memory foam makes a great improvement, not by adding support, but by relieving some of the pressure!

Note: I'd recommend ordering the foam from Cal Sci, or another source you know, I initially ordered some from www. Foam Online. com, but they sent me extra soft tempur foam instead of extra firm.

  13. CafeRacer, I'll try to do it next weekend. To hit it from NOVA on 66 cut thru Gainesville 15 south and take 211 across to  I81 down to exit 72, I77, near Blacksburg, to 614, to 16 in Tazewell.  16 is the Dragon's Back. For you, I64 west to I 81 to I77, 614 to 16. It's almost 400 one way.
Just got back; rode Skyline from Front Royal down to the BRP past 64 and cut west to 81 in Augusta County. About 400, starting in NOVA to Front Royal and return to NOVA. 150 of those miles on 66 to/from NOVA&Front Royal on 66. 10 great hours, including lunch and a fill up. 44.4 mpg, including I 81 & I66. Heavy LEO presence on I66 again.
Glad you got to get out to the BRP, rain hampered most of my riding plans this weekend, although I did get out for a quick coffee run to Richmond on sat:
