  1. I posted this on another forum, but since this is THE FJ-09 forum, I figured I'd repost:

"Stole 2 people's ideas. I made my FJ a little more like my Grom and used my old handlebars to make some additional foot rests for long trips. They may also provide some tip over protection. I also made my own ghetto vibranators."

I also justified my purchase of my giant rear box:

  2. I posted this in another forum I frequent, but because I like sharing images... I made some racks for my soft luggage. Soon the panniers will be bolted to the racks so I don't have to use those stupid velcro straps, and eventually the racks will be quick release and use the original hard luggage mounts.

I got some 1/2" aluminum rod and bent it to the rough shape in a vice. Used a propane torch to help the bends, but it was likely not needed:

Cut off the excess and I was really impressed that the ends lined up. When I was bending, I figured the bend spanned about an inch and just eyeballed it.

Got some 2.5"x0.25" bar and cut it down to 12" for each side. I wish I got 2" instead, but I think the 2.5" will work better for my future plans. Rounded off the corners with a file and drilled some holes.

Got some steel spacers from the hardware store to hold the bracket off the bike. These spacers will double as the hookup points for my elastic cargo net.

  3. I received my "Sport SD" screen in the mail yesterday. I have to say, my opinion of Madstad is continually going downhill. I received a warped screen, but decided to install it anyway. No dice as I've still got the same issue as before. I've tried a 3rd helmet as well, and different types of earplugs. The Sport SD will be going back, and I've ordered a MRA X-creen Sport to go back on the original Madstad screen. I now have almost $500 with of windshield on the FJ and in my garage. D'oh!

FWIW I think this set up just doesn't work for me. My buddy rode the bike and said it was an amazing screen. I said the same about his no name screen on his KLR. At a loss here, but hoping the MRA lip makes it tolerable, as my hour long ride was brutal.

EDIT: also, the Sport SD in 22" is only 1/2" taller than the 20" "new" style.
  4. Interesting. My brackets weren't scalloped like I see in your pictures. I ordered mine last month and got the new screen style with it. The scalloped brackets must be something you have to ask for. No issue with mine holding, but then again my head buzzes so bad at speed I can't see what I'm looking at!

What kind of air flow are you getting? What kind of wind noise? Still deciding on whether I should get the Sport SD style shield, or get an MRA add on. I find it hard to believe that a different screen shape s going to solve my problems.

  5. I think I'm going to swap to the old screen style you guys have, in a 22" size. I originally ordered the 20" and I'm 5'9" (and a half!!). If I hit expressway speeds and sit up straight, I get a very fast buffetting that actually blurs my vision a little (I wear glasses).
  6. I wonder why he thinks it is better? It took several emails back and forth of me asking that question, and eventually he said that the hundreds of happy customers have received the "Sport SD" (which is the old design), and they just recently switched to the new design. Don't get me wrong; their customer service has been great, and Blair has been extremely patient over a dozen+ plus emails. I'm just frustrated at the whole experience, and even more so considering that I may have been their guinea pig at my expense. By the time it's all said and done, I'll have spent probably $60 in shipping (I already splurged on the Madstad in the first place), and I might not even get a shield that works.

I actually saw your post when I turned on my computer to buy an MRA X-creen, but after realizing the screen everyone else has been pleased with is different than mine, I may go fork over the cash for the "Sport SD" style.

I've tried 2 different helmets (Arai XD-3 and Icon Airmada) with the same results. Without earplugs the booming is less, but I think that's just because the higher frequency of the wind noise evens it out.

I've attached 2 images of what mine looks like. Now that I've gone to the KTM handguards, there's heaps of clearance.

EDIT: You can also see that my OEM adjusters are all the way up, and the Madstad adjusters are all the way up, creating a sizable gap between the headlight shroud and windscreen. It does look great though! Checked their site and now I can't find any photos of the FJ-09 screen??

  7. David - I apologize for my delayed response. I agree that the lady I spoke to didn't know much, and I think the other guy I spoke with on the phone just wasn't familiar with the FJ-09, and didn't have the installation instructions nearby. I can't expect everyone to know everything, but a little disheartening that most of what I needed to know what right in the installation instructions, and they incorrectly conveyed that info to me. Since then, I have been speaking with Blair at Madstad via email. We have decided that I should try the "Sport SD" screen. He said that up until recently the Sport SD screen is what shipped with the FJ-09 kits, however the screen I got was the "new" design. I admit that the new design looks a lot better (IMO) than the old one, but he said maybe the old will allow the air to flow better.

The one I have has angled sides and a fancy "M" cutout at the bottom. The Sport SD is much more rounded and "simple" looking. Do you know which one your friend had? I suspect they didn't do testing with the new one, and just changed the looks.
  8. I'm 5'9" with an approximately 32" inseam and purchased the Madstad 20" screen a few weeks ago at the recommendation of their customer service and site. Unfortunately the people helping me had no idea what they were talking about. They said the screen sizing measurements were taken at it's lowest position, and that the full range of stock adjustment can be used, and their own brackets can be adjusted to raise the screen for additional coverage. When it arrived, the instructions stated that the factory bracket must be in the highest of the 3 positions (it will work in the middle, but hits the plastic "v" in the lowest). I tried all heights and angles with the best results being the tallest and most forward (approximately 2" below eyes), which certainly looks a little goofy as opposed to having the screen closer to the bike, but I really don't mind the look.

The worst part is the low frequency booming that I am left with. Under 40 mph this screen is great. Above that and especially at highway speeds I get a horrible booming noise that is more annoying (but quieter) than no screen at all. What is strange is that I get no buffeting, just the sound as if the screen is filtering out all the high frequency noise. If I lower my head another 2-4" the booming is still there, indicating that the taller 22" or 24" might not help. Really torn as to whether or not I just return the whole thing for a refund and eat the shipping and restock, or live with it.

  9. David - I think I ordered those same magnets. My description was accurate, but I was still amazed with how small they were. I got 50 of them and play with them at work while I'm on the phone.

Physik3r - Interested to see what you think of the tail tidy.

hscooter52 - could you post up a picture or two? I have no problem drilling my plate, as I've done that plenty of times on my old bikes. It's likely because the chinese/euro plates are drilled differently. Do the stock signals fit on there? Do you have side cases?

    Thanks.
