  1. I had the SW-MOTECH crash bars and lowsided on the left side at about 35mph.  The good: No major plastic or metal was touched on the top end, just the bar end and and clutch lever had a minor rash.  The bad:  The engine case was toast.  I bought secondary guards for the engine cases after that.caseguard.jpg.3df46f7c806c3c12fb9a8932edf1c151.jpg

  2. Testimony from a similar case - 2016 model
     1. Lowered the rear by installing the Yamaha lowering links.
    2. Dropped the front end about 5/8 of an inch in the triple clamps to keep the geometry same/similar.
At 5 foot 7, I am still not flat-footed, but I feel more confident when the bike is stopped.  As a couple of side effects of this lowering, in my experience, 1 - made the bike stand up a bit more on the side stand and 2 - the bike was a little harder to hoist up onto the center stand.  This in unavoidable.  I feel the Yamaha lowering links were very carefully designed to allow you to keep the stock sidestand and center stand.  But they don't lower the bike much.  I feel the handling has not changed at all, although I have less ground clearance.  I am satisfied.

  3. For anyone considering a REAX Speed Lock Tank Bag, this requires the purchase of a separate Oxford Quick Release Tank Bag Adapter.  You will notice when you attempt to SELECT YOUR BIKE (Revzilla or Cycle Gear) and go through the motions to find the FJ-09 model, it isn't there.  But the FZ-09 and XSR900 are there (!)  For later models, the Tracer 900 is there.  I contacted the manufacturer (Oxford) of the adapter (mounting ring), and they were unable to tell me directly if they made an adapter to fit the FJ-09.  BUT they supplied a link that had more information, which not only had printable templates, but yet another chart that showed the FJ-09, (called the Tracer 900 in their charts, even early models), which shows the adapter is their #5 for the FJ.  These various adapters (1-7) are available directly from Oxford at the same price as other suppliers.  Ordering #5 is the important part.

  4. If you want to see an earlier thread I started on this subject, here:

but here is a summary, so you don't have to wade through all the other comments:

Well, for those still following, I now can answer my own questions after six weeks with the lowering kit in place. Note the following: 1) Handling has not been affected (at least any change I can detect), and I am a fairly aggressive rider, as in drags footpegs with feelers removed. 2) Slight sacrifice in ground clearance - only noted with very aggressive cornering. 3) Side stand and centerstand still work - bike is slightly more vertical on the sidestand, and more effort is required to rock bike up onto the centerstand. Off-road clearance a non-issue with me, as I am pavement-only. The change in overall height is minor; I have a feeling the height was a very careful compromise from Yamaha, so the sidestand/centerstand would still be usable. I also dropped the forks in the tripleclamps about 5/8 of an inch.

  5. I first installed the $11.50 Chinese pegs – those were OK, but then decided to go with the MT-09 adventure pegs mentioned at the beginning of the thread. See image. They are great and look good. Would not dare install the peg feelers (called “bank sensors” in Europe) as I am aggressive canyon guy and was grounding two previous footpegs. Have not touched these down (yet).
