If you ride lots of high speed roads (70 and above) consider a gear change to improve mileage.  I went to a 17 tooth front and now turn 4200 rpm at 70 mph.

On my FJ gas mileage seems very rpm-related.  Mine increased 10% with this change to around 55 mpg.

Most of my riding is on two-lane twisties between 50 and 70 mph with occasional (unavoidable) runs on interstates at 75-80 mph.

That's a big improvement. I assume you had to buy a larger chain?  Do you notice less torque in the lower gears with your new setup?

Are you riding like a bat out of hell? I can't seem to get less than 40 mpg no matter how hard/fast I ride, and the onboard mileage computations are pretty damn accurate from what I've been seeing.

No but I was riding in the mountains and reving it out a bit now that I've passed the break-in period.  Nothing crazy though. I'm going to pay more attention to my gas mileage and how I'm riding.

Glad to hear that you were able to get some assistance.

I have had the "F-Trip" flash several times but the furthest I have ever ridden with it on is a little over 20 miles, I usually find fuel within 10 miles when riding locally, I never push it to F-Trip while on a road trip.  I also find the "Average Fuel" reading to be a bit optimistic, if it says 47mpg, my 'real-world' findings using math at the fuel fill up is closer to 44mpg, about +3 mpg higher than true mileage every time.

Glad you posted this, thanks!  I didn't notice the FTrip on my display so just looked it up in the manual after seeing what you wrote.  Looks like it starts counting when the fuel light comes on with .69 gallons remaining gas in tank.

*Mistake in my post - F-Trip  begins counting when last segment on fuel meter starts blinking, not when fuel light comes on.

  5. Wow, this thread is timely!  I JUST learned what my max range is today.  I ran dry at 188 miles and was stranded for about 2 hours.    I assumed that I was good for about 220 miles based on the avg fuel economy saying 47 mpg.  Wow that was wrong! More like 39 mpg. The fuel light came only came on at about 175 miles.  Regardless of what the fuel gauge or fuel economy says in the future, I'll be looking for gas when I get close to 150 miles...if not sooner!

On a side note, this is the first time in my life that I ever ran out of gas in a vehicle that I was driving.  I tried using my AMA membership for roadside assistance.  I was on hold for over 30 minutes and finally gave up! 😡  Then I called my insurance company (Progressive).  They answered immediately.  I found out that my policy fortunately includes roadside assistance.  It took them about an hour to get to me but really glad I got the assistance.  I won't be renewing with AMA!

I think the Kappa boxes are "cheap" Givis  I also strap a duffle on top instead of a top case.  Duffle goes on the passenger seat and keeps weight more forward.  Have thought about a small top case for helmet and wet weather gear.  Would still put a duffle on the rear seat.  My duffle clears the sidecars so not too difficult to get into them for gear.  The small tool bag in the photo was a substitute tank bag as I had just traded bikes in the middle of a long trip.  Wound up strapping it on top of the duffle bag for the 1,400 mile trip home.  In the pic the bike is new, have only done a 2 mile test ride before setting out for 110 miles!  Everything was totally stock, all settings tire pressures etc.  Wonderful bike and Im in love with it.

Hey PhotoAl,. Thanks for sharing.  I really like the duffle bag idea.  It's certainly the most flexible of all the options and it's easier to pack soft bags.  Even if I get a small top case,  I can still strap a duffle bag over the side cases like you did.  I only plan on traveling 1-up so I have lots of room to work with.  I plan on doing some camping in the spring.  Thanks again!

I went with the Yamaha Tracer 900 Rear Rack/Top Case Mount (Item #B1J-F48D0-V0-00) and added a Kappa Top Box K47nn Manta Monolock System (Plate and universal l kit included).  Install took about 35 minutes.

Thanks for sharing the details of your install.  Very helpful and looks great!   I assume that you built that bracket on the bottom to make it work with the yamaha rack?   I contacted Motorstorm to confirm if a mounting plate is included but I received a response from them that references different model # adapters and plates that leads me to believe that no hardware is included with their Kappa Monokey top cases.   Did the universal mounting plate that you used come with the Kappa top case or did you have to purchase it separately?  Thanks again!

I'm not really sure.  I was 6-2 before I became a grumpy old man.  With an around inseam of 32 inches.  The 24 puts the  bad air about my helmet.  I do get some air around the sides, but nothing bad.  I'm very happy with the 24.

Same dimensions as me.  Thanks for the feedback!  I think I'll go with 24.

I have a MadStad 24 inch and if you ever get to west Texas, it's available for you to try out.  I got off of an ST1300 Honda and stopped in Virginia for an oil change.  The ST was a niche bike like the Tracer and they had never seen one.  I know everyone in the service dept rode it.  I told them I was going to enjoy a coke and they should ride it.  When they finished they came inside and told me it was ready.  I'm older and more stove up so I'll probably never get back to Pa again, but the offer still stands.

Hey Coop,. What's your height if you don't mind me asking?  I'm 6'1"ish and the Madstad site recommends the 24" screen.  I'm thinking either clear or light smoke tint.  Thank you!

  10. The dealer quoted me $149 for 600 mile service.  I thought this was a little high until I saw some of the other quotes on here.  After this first service, I don't plan on bringing it back unless it's for warranty work.  For me, it's much less of a hassle to do the service myself than bringing it the 20 miles to my closest dealer and either waiting there or arranging a ride. The laws are such here that if you can document service (maintaining a log and saving receipts for parts), the manufacturer must honor the warranty or it must prove that service was not completed.  As an aside, I found a service manual on ebay for $13.  I think Yamaha wanted $89 for print or $79 1-year access to a digital manual.

Yeah, it can be a pita.  The other day I was cruising along at 80 mph on cruise and after twenty miles I realized I was in forth gear.  LOL!  If you ever need some twisty roads, come to west Texas.  There is a curve 90 miles north of here.  No need to call ahead, I will be able to see you leaving Ft Worth.  Did I mention it's also kind of flat out here.  Enjoy the new bike and welcome to the forum.

On the bright side, at least you can still enjoy most days December through March.  The roads up here are a mess in the winter with all the salt, sand and cinders.

  12. Thanks for the welcome!  I was initially torn between this and the Versys 1000.  Ultimately I found the Tracer to be a far better deal and it feels more nimble and just a better fit for me.  In my opinion the Tracer feels sportier and less top heavy than the Versys.   I've read tons of glowing reviews about this engine similar to your account and watched a YouTuber called Motojitsu even taking this bike on a racetrack.  You're right about the aftermarket support for this bike! I love that and have started my list from suggestions on this forum.  Probably will start with the Madstad windshield.

I'm going to try and dial in the shocks over the coming weeks.  I'm about 250lb but may look into stronger spring when it's time to change my tires.

    Thanks again!

I have made my own basically thin piece of plastic that uses 2 screws inside original hand guards, crucially they extend above and BELOW original guard as I find windblast freezes my thumbs!

Not pretty but I only use in the winter.my

My clutch and brake lever came from the dealer adjusted higher than the grips.  I have big hands so this was really uncomfortable causing my hands to cramp. I just adjusted (rotated) both levers down about 2".  When doing this, I noticed that this plastic guard rotates with the lever.  Now the bottom of my fingers are covered with the guard.  Before they were fully exposed to wind on the bottom. Not sure if your levers are adjusted the same way as mine were.  Just a thought.

Welcome the forum @Yamagun I live just down the Delaware River from you, at least for the next couple of weeks. We are lucky to have great roads to enjoy the Tracer on. I'm the same height as you and have been running the MRA Variotouringscreen and it still leaves a lot to be desired, but defiantly better than stock.

Thanks Buddy,. Yes some nice roads and scenery in our area.  Truly blessed!
