  1. I forgot, the adjustable screen is too short imo and makes little difference fully up or fully down.  I am waiting for the extended screen to arrive.  I doubt if the easy to use good up/down adjustment mechanism would be transferable.

The new joystick and menu interaction is easily and quickly understood.

The panniers are the same as the Tracer GT boxes and fit quite tidily but are a 'stick out' shape.

  2. Yes seats are a straight swap.  Fitted the cha-ching Yamaha mudflaps, so will post a photo of the cheapo and the maybe better looking pricey option side to side.  The flap performance is the same.

Put muffs on the handlebars, so replaced the front brake master cylinder with an MT10 one so that I could fit MT09 screw in mirrors on each side.

The euro 5 engine seems more responsive than the euro 4, as I believe the gearing/sprockets and maybe swing arm have been changed.  Front end looks identical.  The (huge) digital display is most noticable, but the Garmin Motorize is a gimmick and not a patch on a Zumo XT.  I have only just done the first oil change so will post more when I get out more on it.  I have stayed off the downshifter until run in, but the upshifter works great especially with the zippier performance and the exhaust sounds nicer too.

Overall my first impression is that it is improved (as they did with the 2nd gen FJR), feels like a bigger sport touring  bike.

  3. As you know Danfay Distributors are the importers in Ireland.  They only have 1 in stock, in a crate.  This is the bike I am buying and they are going to build it up this week and put it in their showroom.  I will pick it up in January.  They have no plans to get any more apparently as the list price is very high.

I expect it will take quite a time to sell my 2019,  however I am happy to keep the 2 of them for the time being anyway.  I know of 2 other Nikens in the locality, so sometime when you are back you could take one of mine and we could get a photo of 4 lined up, which would be a rare photo indeed.

  4. My riding friends think I must be crazy, and could well be, but I really enjoy the Niken especially on the Wicklow Gap on a cold dry day.  It is so well spec'd that the only add-ons I can think of are the tox box adaptor and a chain oiler. I have the touring screen and the heated comfort seat on the 2019.  I can fit the mad money Yamaha front flaps on the new one too.

  5. I put a deposit on a new 2023 model Niken last Friday and will be collecting it the first week of January to get a 2024 registration plate on it.

For a time, I will have the 2019 and the 2023 so it will be interesting to see what parts can be swapped between the two versions.

  6. Did exactly the same as Johnjo - replaced my Scottoiler with the 'genuine' Cobrra and found it very good indeed.  So out of curiousity bought the knock off Cobrra for around 30 euro shipped.  Can't see any difference between them either and also use cheapo gear oil.

  7. I fit fender extenders to all my bikes, and while they have to help a bit, I don't think they are that effective really (probably because the ends are rounded off).

The flaps are not elegant, but hugely reduce the crap thrown up on your boots.

  8. I put the Pyramid hugger extension on my Niken - looks nice but makes no difference.

Reluctantly, and in the absence of a listed 'proper' front fender extender, I put rubber flaps on the end of the front fender.  They are very close to the ground without reversing over them.  Work really well in keeping the water/crap off your boots but are a triumph of form over fashion.

  9. You turn the engine over a few times in the normal running direction so that the auto cct initially releases and tensions as it will continue to do for the rest of its working life.

On the Tracer 900 you rotate the engine with a socket from the left side, so the running rotation is anti clockwise.

On an FJR1300 for example, you turn the engine on the right side so you would turn the engine clockwise for normal rotation to tension the cct.

Whether you turn anti clockwise or clockwise, merely depends on whether you are turning the engine viewed from the left side of the engine or turning the engine viewed from the right side.  Either way, you need to turn the engine in its normal direction.
