I'm going to try the lower bolts. I didn't on the first go around because I liked the fact that the upper ones are the ones that have no gaps to pinch.

I believe I read it in the manual and the installation is the same as on my fz1. You loosely tighten the forward bolts down first till the upper and lower clamps touch, then the rear bolts. You end up with a gap on the back side of the clamps. It didn't look right to me the first time I did it but it is.

Typical Yamaha design for handle bars. After the fixed end is tighten, the second end has a gap and becomes like a pinch bolt, like on the front axle. This is typical in axle design on drive shaft bikes too.
