  1. I have read here that the Factory chain spec is tight. Which is why I went with their maximum limit. I had asked the dealer and they said something along the lines of there must be a reason for the tight spec. Now I know they can get stuff wrong ( facotory and dealer) so... I'm kinda trying to float the middle.
Any engineers who can weigh in?
No engineers needed.  Every other sportbike factory specs are much looser, us track folks run it even looser, and there are no issues, only benefits.  Full rear suspension movement, etc.
You should be at least 1 inch or 25mm.  I run 2 on all my track bikes I've ever had.

    For example, the R6 runs 30-45mm (1.18" -1.77") of slack: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/612270/Yamaha-Yzf-R6.html?page=79

It's like Yamaha forgot the 1" in front when they made the FJ09 manual.

  2. I've just started noticing that on every heavy acceleration from stop or quick start with a turn the traction control light flashes. I mean every time... Is this normal? I'm not a psycho rider and I'm talking maybe 70% power on takeoff.
Try cleaning the speed sensor like below

The ABS light came on and left me with no front brake. Shut off and tried again, no change. Disabled TCS and rode home no problem. Next morning, same thing except I had code 069 on the display. Thanks to the forum, I discovered that's a front speed sensor issue. Found a post with pictures of the sensor (thanks again forum) and went to have a look. Removed sensor from housing, removed some debris from the end and wiped off the disk. Replaced everything and started up. No more TCS issues, all warning lights off, code cleared! Cancelled appointment with service department.
    Anyone else experience this?

  3. Hello Folks,
Late to the party as I just picked up a 2015 FJ-09 from a private party... sits in my garage waiting for the title to come in so I can register it! :-)

For reference I am 6' 2" and 180 lbs without gear.

In terms of the most popular windscreen that is helping folks on the slightly taller side, what do you guys and girls suggest I try? Trying to tap into the Cult knowledge that exists on this wonderful forum. Thanks a lot!!
6'3" here.  The windscreen that worked best for me is the Madstad 24" screen.  It's for 6'4" + and works great.  It's fully adjustable with tilt and height adjustment.  It comes with support bracket that is better than the stock one.
I had tried the Calsci large, but still got buffeting at the top of my helmet.

Here are some pics of it installed on my bike.

  4. In reading through this thread, I certainly hope that my dealer just does this without asking if there is a "noise" from the cam chain.   This is a new bike for me and, while I can pick up bad sounds in a car very easily, this bike makes a lot more "new" noises than my old one.  I'm no noob as far as working on my own stuff but I couldn't tell you if it's the cam chain, regular chain, "unique triple noises", or the transmission making any of the noises on the bike.  Riding season is short up here so I will probably try the dealer in the next week or so and see if they will entertain this TSB and when they can do it.
Yes this bike does have a few noises that are common, but not bad.  One of them is the loud clutch basket in neutral with the lever released.  As soon as you pull it in the noise goes away.
  5. With 2WDW ECU reflash and G2 throttle tamer, I do not feel the need for slipper clutch with aggressive street riding. So I am wondering why you want it and if simple changes in set up may help.
There are leverage gizmos that can be added to the clutch cable, but I do not know what fits FJ O9.  Since this kind of gizmo reduces force by increasing distance, you do have to make sure there is enough travel available to move the clutch pack the full distance needed.

That might help with the assist part, but the part that we are all most interested in is the slipper clutch.  Slipper clutches are awesome at the track.  Are they needed on the road? I don't think so, but they're just fun to have, like quickshifters on the road.
  6. I think I'll just go in. Dealer's get reimbursed at retail rate (i think) for it anyways, so they shouldn't have a problem performing it.

It appears that only about 4000 FJs in the US are affected. The bigger drain on their supply chain will be the FZ09s, of which there are almost 14000 affected.

I just looked at my VIN, and I'm one of the ones affected.

On a related note, do we know how many FJ09s were sold in the US and internationally?

  7. Yes Pit Bull triple tree lift if you're going to be using it regularly. The cheaper brands also work, but tend to fail much sooner than Pit Bull products.  Browse your local craigslist, and you'll eventually find someone selling a Pit Bull stand cheaper than retail, and it'll continue to last years and years.

  8. OP is right, the new FJR and XSR900 have the slipper AND assist clutch. I'm pretty jealous they got it.

I'd be willing to bet you could swap in the parts. Though I wonder all said and done, if a yoyodyne slipper would be less expensive.

Here are the two parts fiches. Looks like There are some big differences.

  9. I have the Calsci Large, but am still getting some buffeting, so I ordered the Madstad 24" clear today. I am 6'3". I think it will be better since it has it's own mounting system that seems more stable than the stock mount points, and allows air under to prevent the vacuum that causes turbulence.

Was a bit pricey at $287 shipped though :(
  10. Ha you guys saved your stock grips? I cut those suckers off lol. My air compressor decided it didn't' want to work. Besides, new grips (if I wanted to take off the heated?) are $10.

I'm pretty used to cutting off my grips each race season and adding new ones so I guess I didn't have any reservation about doing it haha.

Oh yea, and I've seen it mentioned before, but hair spray works great instead of grip glue.
