  1. Today's farkle adventure included installing my $24 eBay shorty levers. I love em' since I usually brake and shift with two fingers anyways. I was relatively surprised how heavy and well built they were for being such an inexpensive product. Plus they look great on the bike. Install took about 20 minutes, and I had never done this modification on a bike before. I watched a very helpful how-to video here:

This guy has a ton of how-to vids uploaded for the FZ, which translate over quite well to the FJ. Score!

  2. I installed my AdventureTech light mount and LED light bar the other day.....Freekin love it! The light bar can be toggled between amber/white mode by the switch that was included with the light, which I discretely hid behind the left side handguard. Also, installed a set of Amazon rubber footpegs, which provide a vastly improved difference over the stock pegs. Also kind of hard to see behind the light bar, but I installed a Nautilus air horn....and HOLY MOLY this sucker is loud!!

Can you please post a link to that light bar and mount? Looks great, how functional is it?

    Sure thing.

The light mount is from a sponsor on here, Adventure Tech: http://www.adventuretech.biz/yamaha-fj-09.html
The light bar is from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/MICTUNING-Intensity-Driving-Customized-Harness/dp/B00WGCZZXC?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

The light is very functional, and has excellent output. I am very pleased with it. I had to do slight customizing to the mount since it was made for two individual lights, and not this LED bar I mounted. But it was easy peasy. Install took less than two hours from start to finish. The light comes with a super heavy duty wiring harness, with 3 relays and a switch. It was a bit long for the bike, so I cut off about 3 extra ft of cable running to the light. I think it looks and works great, plus I love being able to have the light amber or white.

Zach, any more info of those would be cool... Direct bolt-ins? No modification needed? Got  link to them?
They were a direct fit, the only modification needed is drilling out the rivet on the left side peg...which is necessary to put any aftermarket peg in. Other than that, they worked out perfect. The best part...the $11.50 price tag on them. Say GOODBYE to vibrations! Feels so much better.

  5. Got my Amazon pegs installed today. The left side peg has to be drilled out since it is riveted, otherwise...they went in without a hitch. I reused the oem pin on the right side. Had to use the supplied pin for left side. I used the OEM springs for both sides. What a vast improvement over the OEM pegs. And at a whopping $11.50, you can't go wrong. Install took about ten minutes.

  6. I have these being delivered tomorrow. I will chime back in on how straight forward the install is. Several FZ09 guys had left good reviews, so we'll see tomorrow. They only cost me $11.50, so if they don't work out, at least I'm only out a few bucks.

  7. You mention you were getting 48+MPG......I used to get that no problem. All a sudden lately, I struggle to get 42-43 MPG average. Nothing has changed in my riding style. Bike only has 4700 miles on it. What do you think could be the cause of my issue? Does the dealer need to be looking at something for me?[span]
    [/span]
Could it be the colder temps? I have noticed that my mileage is lower and the coolant temp gauge doesn't get above about 140-150. The ECU is likely running a rich fuel mixture, thus reducing mileage. Should improve with warmer days.
Here in Arizona, its been in the upper 70's all the way to high 80's for the past several weeks. Doesn't seem to have changed since warming up. Then again, it really doesn't get all that cold here right now. Perhaps it could also be the added weight from my luggage (givi top and side cases), but I really don't think that should have THAT big of an effect on it (5+mpg)
  8. Picked up my FJ from the mechanic. Had the Valves adjusted, swingarm lubed, fork oil changed & new bushings, air filter, spark plugs and cables lubed.
Checked valves before adjustment:  0.0102-.0118 good.  Note those that are lower, are way to low and only two close to being in spec.  Will write Yamaha and advise of this condition at only 26K.  The intake valves were all in spec. so mech. didn't write anything down.

Even with the tight valves, plugs still look good and are only a little out on gap. 26K

All the way thru Dec. I was getting 48+ mpg.  A good indication the valves weren't causing too much problem.  I didn't notice any difference in performance.

Sure was nice to ride it home.  The bike is just so inspiring to go fast and leave the traffic behind you. :)

  9. Serious question:
Why do people post that they rode their FJ for "XXX many miles" as something they did to the bike? Technically speaking, its something you did ON, not to.

This thread should be designated for modifications and tinkering only, there is a sub-section for rides. Post that info there if you feel the need. Let's not clog up this awesome thread with bs daily rides you went on.

Good for another 400 miles and an oil change when I got home..
I changed my oil.. There's a whole section of the forum called "FJ-09 Garage" and multiple subgroups for mods and tinkering messages..  This thread is in the General Discussions section.   Sounds to me like you need to go put some good miles in... It might help your attitude...

Did 435 miles yesterday to Kartchner Caverns outside of Tucson. Through rain, sleet, hail, and snow. Had a blast.
    Thanks :)

  11. ...If you are ever able to ride the Devils Highway (formerly Route 666, now renamed Route 191) ...
Going either way on US 191 is a great ride, especially if you add in the ride along US 60 from Florence Junction to Show Low. I've gone that way myself, and I have to admit that I like it better when I start in the south from Morenci and head north to Springerville and Show Low. It just works better for me, since the more technical curves are mostly south of Hanagan Meadow, when I'm fresher. Mostly sweepers north of there.
A pretty good extension to that ride is to push it east from Alpine, AZ over to US 180 in New Mexico and head south and then west on NM 78 till it curves you back into Arizona south of Clifton/Morenci.

Congrats - sounds like a long day...

It was a VERY long day...but so worth it. Yes, this is the route we took, heading out the 60 to safford, then up to three way, and then North on 191. A great back road to skip around greer was suggested by a local, Route 249. Its a great back road that takes you behind Sunrise Ski Resort. It was amazing, and also cut 30 mins off the trip.
  12. It was a bit nippy this morning at 40*F. My hands were basically frozen solid most the way to work- never thought I'd say that 60*F feels warm!!!
Has anyone fitted factory heated grips yet? Dealers here are saying January 1st is when they'll be able to get them.
    I'm sorry...but is this a serious question?
To answer your obvious question, yes...plenty have.

I opted for less expensive alternatives, Oxfords from Revzilla. I LOVE them. Look back a few pages, I posted a pic.
  13. The fitment over the handlebars was fine once I got the bars cleaned off from the OEM grip glue, which was minimal. Test fitment was easy to fiddle with for fitment and placement, as well as removal to lay down the glue. The clutch side fitment was perfect. HOWEVER, the length on the throttle side, for some reason, is about half an inch short from covering the plastic piece underneath, which is pretty annoying. Not sure why it was designed like this. I'm gonna have to figure something out to cover the plastic that now shows. Also, the bracket to hold the controller will work, just not as intended. I had to bend the bracket a little bit to fit where I wanted it. Then I painted it black with plastidip. It looks really good, and depending on your hand size, you can actually reach it without removing your hand from the grip.

Honestly, for $90, I don't think these can be beat. They get super hot within 2 minutes, and reduced vibrations big time over the stock grips. I could care less when it comes to having to scroll through my menu to turn on the OEM grip heaters, versus pressing a button on my bars. This is just as easy, if not easier since there are no menus to scroll through, just a simple button to press. Not to mention saving $200 and having them now, instead of 6 months from now. The auto shut off feature these have is also pretty sweet!

Here is what the throttle side looks like:
