    Guys, I like the effort you did to make this work. Do you think this idea can work to control Gerbing heated gloves and jacket?

    I want to buy them but I am trying to find a better way for the controller.

    I’ve actually read about someone doing that very thing and it worked just fine. That’s part of how I came up with my idea. Unfortunately you would only have the same heat level for your jacket and gloves. This is why I run my grips on the factory menus.

  2. I’m sorry for not responding sooner, but hunting season is upon us so I’ve been busy elsewhere.

    As stated earlier, you can reuse your grips if you’re careful. I did.

    I took the measurements at idle. Since we’re dealing with PWM, the heat output will not change. The heat output would only change if you changed one of the variables in Ohm’s Law. The resistance is fixed, the voltage is fixed, so the current and subsequently the wattage are fixed.

    As for my the uneven heat between the grips, I did put heat shrink on the left grip when I installed it, but there simply isn’t room to put more. My only viable option is to wrap the bar end in heat shrink or electrical tape during cold weather riding. The other option is to remove them in cold weather, but I don’t like that option.

    Does anyone have a recommendation for a on line source for OEM parts. I go to my dealer they don't have the parts I'm looking for in stock and it's a two week wait before I can pick them up, so why am I going?

    I’ve most recently bought from Pro Caliber, but I usually start by looking on eBay and Amazon.

    My buddy loaned me his pocket scope. Guess what? Same duty cycle numbers you posted for the Heat Demons is what I got for Yamaha grips +/- 1%.

    Here's some scope porn from measuring level 10.

    And, yes, heat sink. I will say Heat Demon's are balanced pretty well with the addition of the heat shrink. I remember when these came with a big ceramic resistor  :)

    Thanks for posting that. You confirmed my suspicions that Yamaha only allows 3 heat levels, even with the factory grips. Interesting that they offer 10 levels of adjustment with most being the exact same pulse width.

    If you are planning on doing the Haul Road, I can't imagine why, but if you do, you will have to do lots of gravel.

    Because it’s there, and you only live once.

    Having said that, I only hope that I get the opportunity one day. If I don’t, I won’t lose any sleep over it. I guess I just like the idea of riding in remote places.

  6. I hear the fan run practically every day. It typically kicks on as the temp nears 200 degrees. I would check the connector to make sure its securely connected. I’d also check to make sure the fan spins freely.

    I’ve ridden two up in hot weather and had no problem with overheating. I hope your problem has an easy fix.

  7. Riding home yesterday I got to educate a cager on proper merging. I was cruising along in the left lane in the interstate with a semi in the center lane a couple of car lengths ahead of me. I was gaining on the truck, but not flying past him because we were coming into a heavily patrolled section of road. Cars were merging from an on-ramp, and a minivan decided to merge immediately into my lane without looking. Fortunately I saw that this was likely to happen, so I was already decelerating. When she blindly merged into my lane I gave her a couple short taps from my horn, which is definitely not stock. She immediately thought she had cut off someone in an old Buick, not a motorcycle. When she glanced over her shoulder and saw me she clearly mouthed “Oh $h!t” and proceeded to swerve back and forth like a fool. It was pretty apparent by her behavior that she has been on a motorcycle and knew that she had done something incredibly stupid. Hopefully she learned a lesson to look, not just listen for motorcycles. Loud pipes don’t save lives, conscious and considerate driving does.

  8. I finally had an opportunity to take some measurements of the PWM duty cycle for each of the 10 levels available on the menu, and what I found surprised me.

    10=51.5%

    9=51.5%

    8=51.5%

    7=51.5%

    6=51.5%

    5=51.5%

    4=31.5%

    3=21.4%

    2=0%

    1=0%

    So basically there are only 3 levels of adjustment. I would be extremely interested in taking the same measurements with factory heated grips to see if the percentages are different.

    Also, I figured out why my left grip doesn’t get nearly as warm as my right grip. Can anyone say, “Massive heatsink?”

  9. I did receive my Scorpion slip-on, and I installed it this weekend. It looks and performs great on the bike. I will say that it is actually louder than I expected, especially with the baffle removed. With no baffle, it's louder than my wife's CBR954RR with a Two Brothers Racing pipe. With the baffle in place, it's about the same volume, but has a deeper sound. I'm satisfied with the sound of pipe. Not so obnoxious as to upset the neighbors, but loud enough to be heard over other engine noises.

  10. Hey Chitown,

    I haven't taken measurements yet, but I will as soon as I get my hands on a capable multimeter. That might even happen later this week.

    I also had a chance to ride with my grips yesterday. It was about 60 degrees and cloudy, so I didn't actually need to run the grips, but I did want to experiment with them. I'm still working out the settings for low/med/high, but I do find them to be very warm. In fact, with just leather gloves on, I had to turn them to low and then stop to adjust the low setting to keep from roasting my hands. I find that the left grip heats slowly, which is certainly due to the heating element being in nearly direct contact with the metal handlebar. Other than that, they work just fine. They will be a nice complement for my Gerbing heated gloves because the gloves are an older model with no heating element in the palms. When combined with heated grips, they work perfectly.

    I'll post again once I have the duty cycle readings. Then I'll take the time to create a proper how-to post for this.

    Had a closer than necessary experience with a UPS truck a half a block from home.

    He was driving completely in the wrong side of the road, then got over like he saw me but swerved back to the middle of the road about the time of the first snapshot. For no reason. I don't think he even saw me because he slammed the brakes on when I went by his open drivers door.

    And it still didn't occur to me to hit the horn.

    Thought about emailing the video to UPS but I couldn't find any contact info and I doubt it would do any good anyway.

    If you have a time stamp on the picture and can tell them where you were, they will know exactly which truck it was, who was driving it, and how fast it was going. I would report it.

  12. Welcome to the site, and I’m sure you’ll be able to find the source of the problem with some simple troubleshooting. Check the obvious...fuse, loose connection, bad switch, etc.

    Once you have them working, you should be able to use them as daytime running lights.

    Let us know what you find. We’ll help if we can. Just know in advance that the fuses for those lights might not be located in the main fuse box. There are some additional fuses located behind a panel on the right front of the bike. More details can be found with a couple of searches on the site.

  13. A lot has transpired since my last post, but I'll bypass the pointless details and go straight to the pertinent information.

    I received this email from Chris at pedstop late on Tuesday evening:

    Hi Darrin

    Apologies for the lack of communication and delay in the order. We have changed servers and have missed quite a portion of emails sent to the sales@ address without knowing, this also affected our mobile site which we have realised today.

    Your order is not affected by our closing down statement and we will likely be trading the amount of stock that we have for at least the next 12 months.

    I’ve attached a screen grab of your order which is still pending with Scorpion, as the product description mentions we don’t hold stock, as an order comes in we order it direct with the manufacturer and then send it once received.

    Scorpion are in their busiest period at the moment so they are a little slower than normal.

    We will chase them tomorrow and find out when it will leave. If this is not acceptable please let us know and we get the order stopped before they ship.

    Again apologies for not seeing your mails and for the panic regarding closing, we are a trustworthy company that has a excellent reputation, this will continue to the end.

    Regards

    Chris

    Then this morning I had another email stating that my part had shipped. I checked with FedEx, and sure enough, the part is on its way with an expected delivery of Monday, May 20th. Presuming that the delivery goes well, all is once again right with the world.

    Clearly pedstop was experiencing technical problems, and those happen. Also clearly, they honored their word and the part is on its way. I will now humbly retract my previous rants about Adrenalin-pedstop as a vendor. I will also suggest that members watch their website for bargains, especially members in GB. I don't know how much stock they have on hand for our bikes, but I suspect there will be bargains to be found on whatever they have.

    I'll post an update once I have my exhaust installed, which will likely happen over Memorial Day weekend.

    Thanks,

    Duke

  14. Interesting story for sure. I’m actually still surprised that it had that much damage. Guys drown motorcycle engines pretty regularly, and generally get away with pulling the plug to clear the combustion chamber and changing the oil. I’m not saying that the engine doesn’t suffer some damage, but they can usually be made to run.

    Not that it makes any difference whatsoever, because your engine obviously didn’t like ingesting water. Really a bummer no matter what.

    KLRs die? That’s contradictory to everything I’ve read on the internet, so it can’t possibly be true.

  16. Here's a link to a thread on running the Oxfords with the OEM controls. Lots of good information in there as well, including information about the correct connectors to use.

    And here's a thread on Adventure Riders for the Super Tenere. More good information there that applies to us because the S10 uses the same menus and such to drive the grips.

    WWW.YAMAHASUPERTENERE.COM

    They are $399 MSRP. A 2 hr install by dealer. They are supposed to integrate with the menu rocker switches to operate. I bought a set but have not had them installed...

    As someone who hasn't owned a super sport, I'm considering a 600cc class bike in the future.  I look at the HP/Torque numbers though and wonder if I'll be disappointed in the performance vs the FJ-09 and if I should just get a 1000cc.  The draw for me is that I LOVE the scream of the 600s hitting that 14-16k rpm and I also like the idea of riding the nuts off of one, in contrast to babying the throttle on a litre-bike.

    It’s more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow, so I would choose the smaller displacement and lighter machine.

    That’s just an opinion based upon where I would spend my money. It’s also based upon my level of ability and experience. You might choose differently, and there is nothing wrong with that.
