  1. I saw the sticker on my Givi outback 42L saying "LIMIT is 120 KPH (which is ~75mph)"...

Cruising speed here is quite high (>85mph), but guess what ? nothing happens when riding >75mph.

Those stickers are just there for the manufacturer to decline all responsibility if anything happen to someone riding over the speed they defined as safe.

Ride withing your skills, and you shall be fine.

Just remember that more weight means longer stopping distance.

  2. Hi all,

I recently (August 2023) moved to the San Diego county (north of the county), from San Francisco Bay Area.

I used to ride in the Santa Cruz mountains, Mount Hamilton, Calaveras Rd, to name a few.

What are the fun roads in the area ?

    Thanks

  3. Here are my 2 cents : if your bike is salvaged and don't think about spending countless hours putting it back together, just walk out with the money and get a new bike! I think you got that already, but, just to reiterate!

Now, new bike, I would say think about what you'd like your dream bike to be and get it!

In another post I mentioned the Kawaski H2 SX/SE-whatever they put after H2 that is the sport/touring version (if you want to get crazy insane perf with some comfort).

If you'd like to keep in the same style Tiger900 is nice and smooth (did a test one the 800 before buying the FJ09), S1000XR would be a nice upgrade (engine speaking), the MV looks awesome, but if you don't have a dealership close to where you live or work, I wouldn't think about it! Have you considered the Multistrada V2? or perhaps a KTM 890 Adventure?

I used one on a previous bike - only because electronic cruise control wasn't available for that bike.  The Kaoko worked well on a flat road, as soon as you encounter any degree of incline you will slow down and any downward grade will have you speeding up rapidly.  I live in an area with elevation changes, I was constantly making minor adjustments to maintain the desired speed.  If you live in a flat region, it should work very well for you.

Now that I have a bike that is compatible with an electronic cruise control I am forever spoiled and will never own a bike without CC again.

Did you find an aftermarket for the 1st gen of FJ09 ? If yes which one?

  5. I've ridden in France during cold winter, and winter gloves were enough for me on a bike without heated grips.

Reading all those comments reminded me that time but I'm glad I live in California now, in SF Bay Area, but at least it doesn't get so cold that I need to think about getting heated gloves.

I ride with mid-season gloves with heated grips on when temperature drops and that's largely enough.

The menu to turn them on is really easy on the 2016 model (with 3 presets), not sure about younger version.

No option vote for both top and side cases? For long touring I use both top and sides. But on commutes and short day trips, just the top. Depending on season, sometimes just the side over the top case. Again depends on what I'm bringing for layers or other items like tools, etc.

If you go aluminum, might add just a little bit of weight. More advantageous with adding more stuff in Al cases since these are rectangular or box form. Downside would be a bit higher cost.

I vote for both.  You can't beat the utility of having lockable cases on the bike for any purpose, long trip or just commuting.  Also you can lock your helmet in either case and jacket which I find is useful when commuting.  When touring I will add a 12L tank bag and a 30 L Motocentric tail bag to carry my shoes and Depends.

I have the SHAD SH45 top case and stock Yamaha side cases.

Well, the question is more if you can get just the top case or just the side cases.

  7. Sorry if this topic was already discussed...

I need some advice on luggage!

I use a Kriega US-30 tail bag which is pretty good for commuting, very light and can accommodate everything I need for a day at the office (laptop, shoes, hoodie, etc), it can also be removed anytime.

I'm thinking about getting more robust and secure luggage on my bike...

It would be either side cases or top case...

What are pros and cons of both ?

Would you recommend the aluminum boxes? or other types?

    Thanks!

I LIKE FLIP-UPS AND ALL OF MINE HAVE A DROP-DOWN INTERIOR SUN VISOR; AS DOES MY FULL FACE.

BUT SINCE YOU HAVE PANNIERS, JUST CARRY A CLEAR ONE IN ONE OF THEM OR A TANK OR PILLION BAG

    SORRY FOR THE CAPS

OH AND YOU MENTIONED SRARWARS, OBVIOUSLY YOUR BETTER HALF IS A MANDALORIAN FAN...

I used to have a Scorpion Exo 1000 which had the inside sun visor...

My Arai doesn't have that... but I love it more 😅

So it's sunglasses/sunscreen and clear visor for me

I still recommend a dark visor!

Well, dark visor is good until it starts to get dark outside!

On another occasion, I also had that issue while riding in broad daylight but under dense forest... Opening the visor was ok until I started to get dust in my eyes!
