  1. Guys, if you are gonna post helmets, could ya please post a link or a pic?
OK, you asked for it. The Bell RS-1 Airtrix Meltdown.
Ugliest helmet I ever wore. Good for visibility though, it gets noticed.
Looks like squid wear so makes me feel younger.
Really wanted that in the solid silver, but it wasn't imported here and needs the official standards sticker to be legal..

  2. Smartsox compression socks for long rides! SmartWool socks make boots fit like gloves and keep foot sweat down.  Bonus is that wool works well to keep you warm but breathes.
Thanks for that @bobdog !  Makes sense to use compression socks on long rides, to combat DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis), as on flights.

I've ordered some Smartwool and some Coolmax socks to see how well they'll wick away sweat from hot feet.
    Cheers, Rob

  3. I needed something to ride and that I could stand and walk all day while standing on a parking lot for 8 hours (motorcycle instructor). I found the Sidi Dohar very comfortable http://www.sidisport.com/eng/scheda.php?macro=2&id=44&lng_riv=
When I expect rain, I simply add a pair of these : http://www.sealskinz.com/UK/socks/thin-mid-length-sock. Wore those while ice climbing and I was the only one with dry feet in the group.

I also have a stiffer older pair of low profile Sidi's I like but I have wide feet and they get uncomfortable on long rides.
    Interesting socks !

Does anyone have sock tips ?
Long or short, thick or thin, wool, cotton or synthetic ?

  4. For variety and rides around town, I have just received a pair of brown Italian Falco Volts.
They're short and suitable to wear under jeans, and are reasonably comfortable to walk in.

    .

How comfortable are they to walk? Love the look!

They're pretty comfortable. I'm slightly pronated and they feel fine. There is plenty of room around the ankle for me, I use the 4th notch of 14 on the ratchet. I wouldn't hike in them, but they've been fine around town as I've been wearing them in.

Way more comfortable than my old Rossi's (I've forgotten they're on, unlike the Rossi's) and not as comfortable as old hiking boots.
My leathers are a bit short for these boots when on the bike, but my kevlar jeans and textile pants are fine.

They feel like engineer's boots and are not angled like race boots.
After inserting some "odor-eater" insoles, they're quite snug, and my feet get quite warm. I'm going to try different types of socks to see which are cooler.

  5. After melting a chunk of the right heel off my Australian Rossi boots on an exhaust during a 600km day,
I now normally ride in a pair of RJays Highway boots .

I grabbed these for a great price on ebay from a Spanish company in Madrid.
10 days from Spain to Australia (Madrid-Liege-Dubai-Singapore-Brisbane, fun to watch the tracking)

The buckle has a ratchet for fine adjustment, and the flap is velcro. No laces to catch on levers !
Good malleolus protection, we'll see how well they hold up after some more wear.

  6. A t-shirt !
    But over that:

White/black Icon Overlord leather jacket - well vented and actually cooler than my Dririder Air Ride summer mesh jacket.
I wear an Olympia Blaze hi-viz vest around town, as there are lots of geriatrics and tourists here.

Rhok Gen 4 (EN 13595 certified) kevlar jeans with hip and knee armor. The knees unzip to easily remove armor.

Carbon/Kevlar gauntlet gloves with palm slider. No idea of the brand, but am looking for replacements with the same features.
    Rjay's Highway boots.

. Edit: hotlinked pics have broken, standby while I put them elsewhere  now on photobucket.
  7. New Bell RS-1.
It has great peripheral and adequate vertical vision, but my prescription sunglasses sit a bit high.
It's quiet and is lighter and fits better than the Bell star carbon.

Previous was a KBC, it was light and comfortable but it's vent covers de-laminated after getting wet.
Before that, a couple of AGVs, and before that, a Shoei RF-200.
  8. Just got a new FJ-09 and tried the windscreen at its highest and lowest, but there was a lot of buffeting in both positions. I took off the screen and the noise is gone, and am now just looking for the smallest screen possible that is curved and makes the front look more like other sportbikes.
I read this whole thread and the best looking ones to me are the CalSci dark shorty, but it requires taking off the hand guards which I want to keep for now, and I really like the look of this MRA screen but it isn't available yet - http://www.bs-motoparts.com/en/wind-protection/double-bubble-screen-mra-yamaha-mt-09-tracer-2015-clear-i674-56989-0.htm

Can anyone recommend the smallest screen possible that might offer minimal protection, but finishes off the front end with a nice curved sporty look?
Just noticed that that MRA "double bubble" screen is now in stock. Looks too low for touring with.
  9. This is from my inquiry into MRA windshields for the 09. I had their screen on my Versys and the adj spoiler was the bomb!

    Hello David,

Thanks for your Email. Unfortunately, we have no windshields for this bike
available and no plans for producing windshields for this bike. Sorry.

    Best regards

    This site
has double bubble MRA screens for MT-09 Tracer listed with pictures, but "currently not available". Maybe the MT-09 Tracer/FJ-09 dual name causes confusion.

  10. Just a quick warning about insurance.
I posted some Aussie insurance quotes over in the "Insurance" thread, and discovered some shady tactics from one company.

One company will sign people up and start charging them, confusing "quote" and "contract".
Do not give out your credit or payment details when getting a quote. They can be very pushy and unprofessional.
You know who i mean. O_o
