  1. Brackets arrived today from Greece. Few observations: 1. These are not new old stock. No Yamaha branding, markings, or installation instructions. 2. The brackets are aluminum. Powder coating leaves a lot to be desired. Spacers are raw aluminum and stainless hardware is ungraded. 3. The cross bar piece that the OEM kit came with is not included. Does any of this matter? Was the OEM kit overbuilt? Time will tell. More details when I have a chance to fit them.
  2. It almost feels to good to be true but my set should be here Friday. I’ll report back promptly.
  3. If you don’t mind spending a few more bucks, you can add the catalytic converter to that system which quiets it down a bit. I had one of those on my MT-09 (and an Arrow, and Akra carbon loop). The Ti is one of the quietest on the market outside of OEM…with the baffle and cat. If you uncork it, it gets properly loud. If you ever tire of it and decide to sell…you message me first!
  4. It’s a great point and a significant omission on my part. The description and pictures seem to be in line with what I need, so I’m rolling the dice and will report back in either case. Keep your fingers crossed!
  5. I messaged them and said they can get it, but 4-6 weeks. Which really surprised me considering what I’ve found. But as already stated, I have a feeling that order would fall through. Dude! I searched eBay from top to bottom (or so I thought)! I clearly just didn’t get the right search terms correct. I ordered a set, and if these show up and save me the hassle of making my own, I owe you a beer!
  6. Easier said than done, but that’s an option I’m considering. Unless someone else has any other words of wisdom.
  7. I recently bought a set of FJR1300 panniers from a fellow member. Unfortunately, the foot peg brackets that came with them are for the GT model and won't fit on my 2017 FJ-09. Upon searching, it looks like I need the 2PP-284G0-00-00 which is no longer available anywhere. Does anyone know something I don't about a superseded part number for that OEM kit? I'm coming up empty. Unless I can find someone selling a used kit, I seem to be an an impasse, which is most unfortunate considering an upcoming trip. Has anyone tried fitting the GT model's passenger peg mounts? Not sure if the dimensions will line up to the luggage, but it's all I can think of at the moment. Any help is much appreciated!
  8. I took one ride with the stock windscreen the day I got the bike. As is already super well documented, it was horrible on the highway. My vision blurred from the helmet vibrations! So I took it off altogether and was pretty smitten with the results. Clean air for days! I didn’t look the look of the exposed bracketry and screws, however. So I did this. It’s a touch less good than a complete removal, but hoping it helps channel the fall/spring air around my helmet instead of up into my eyes where it dries out my contacts.
  9. What are those lower shields just above the headlight? How well do they work?
  10. I must have missed the video, thanks for the info. I was about to type into my response that it looked like something got jammed between the teeth. Didn’t know about the failed shift drum, so this is starting to make sense. Not all quickshifters are created equally…depending on the tuning, they can be very harsh on the drivetrain.
  11. My street bikes get 1-2 washes a year with this: https://www.s100.com/portfolio/s100-total-cycle-cleaner/ It works wonders and I’ve been using it for years. It makes dirt bikes look like new, so take that for what it’s worth. The car wash wand does a great job throughout the year when it’s really mucky. Quick and easy.
  12. Your understanding is correct. I suppose it’s possible that smashing a dog could possibly transmit a load spike into a specific tooth, but that sounds like a stretch for me. Constant mesh gear trains are specifically used to REDUCE the wear due to gear change loading. This is not the first time a new motorcycle of any variety had this issue and it’s most commonly the result of design and/or manufacturing defects. But Yamaha, specifically, has had the issue in recent history: https://www.motorcyclistonline.com/recall-news-yamaha-recalls-r1-and-r1m-sportbikes-for-defective-transmissions/#:~:text=Faulty transmission gears could lock up on 2%2C921 Yamaha superbikes.&text=THE RECALL%3A Yamaha Motor Corporation, transmission gears that may fail. But in fairness to Yamaha, none of us know the full story and we can only hope that both the dealer and Yamaha conducted themselves professionally and honestly in this failure. I feel for the owner as this is a very expensive job.
  13. Swapped out the 16T sprocket for a 15T - and I'm totally in love! More snap everywhere and doesn't feel buzzy or stressed on the highway. In fact, the engine lugs less in 6th gear and that every so slight "mechanical groan" sensation is all but gone. Handlebars seem like they may be a touch less vibey, but that may all be in my head. It just so happens to be the first mod I've done on this new-to-me 2017, but what a profound usage of $30. Very happy with the results!
  14. Hard to go wrong with these bikes! Do it.
  15. Nothing wrong with a Race Tech setup! I have a well-functioning RT gold valve setup in my WR250R. I'm sure it works well for you.
  16. Stoltec. GP carts and Penske rear.
  17. The 2015 and 2017 swingarm part numbers are different, but that doesn’t mean the length is different, of course. Could be anything. Not that it really matters at this point, but I’m intrigued all the same. First order of business is a full suspension overhaul, and I never ride with passengers and rarely loaded for touring.
  18. Yeah, I specifically wanted the slipper clutch. So the 17+ was my target. I’ve been a little confused by some other differences, though. Did the fairing or windscreen change at all? And how about the swingarm, I read on this forum that it was 10 mm longer than the 15-16 models…but not as long as the 18-20 models.
  19. Shhh! Don't tell anyone... It's my favorite motorcycle I've ever owned.
  20. Thanks! And yes there is. I’m in NEPA.
  21. About ten years ago, most of my riding friends were bitten with the ADV bug and bought various machines. I was firmly in the street camp and didn't see the point. I definitely didn't want to deal with the compromise of a full size ADV bike, so I missed out on some fun trips. Then I got into dirt riding as a way of "cross training" to improve my track and street riding skills (which I think it did in spades). I dabbled slowly due to other priorities in life (cough - kids). But... I did the full NEBDR last year with a couple buddies. Ran the route in the typical direction (north), and then rode the backroads home. We did all the technical sections, and even recreated the original route that included a more technical section in Maine (was shown in the documentary) and then went on the logging roads to Jackman, ME. Was about 1,700 miles round trip. I've done a lot of sport touring over the years, but if I'm being honest, this was probably the single best trip we've done. We had 2 WR250R's and a DR650. I (on a WR) never wanted a bigger bike, even on the tarmac sections - which were not highway. To each their own, but I'm just not interested in the big bikes for the types of riding I do. They're simply too tall, too heavy, and way too pricey when things break. The little bikes really hold their own in the gnar, of course. That translates into using less energy per mile - which extends the day and keeps my focus sharp. We run DOT knobbies on these bikes. If you run street pressures, the tires wear just fine on asphalt and really don't give up much grip in the twisties. I can easily hold my own on the WR alongside faster bikes with street tires. No BS. Of course, the real benefit is being able to air them down for the technical sections and dirt/gravel roads. Having owned some 'big' bikes before with ADV tires, I simply don't care to deal with the compromise of an ADV tire. Full disclosure however, the tires will be smoked after 2000 miles if you're not on top of the pressure and you're a heavy trail braker (guilty). So, if you're doing a 4,000 mile trip, you'll need to either change the set out half way through or deal with the compromises of an ADV tire. As far as lodging, we did a mix of camping and hotels. The camping was partially to save a few bucks, but mostly to spend time in nature. It definitely adds time to the day to set up and tear down and the gear adds up on the bike. But even bringing our own food and cooking gear, total weight was only around 40-50 lbs total. Not bad for to be comfortable for 8 days! On a light bike like the WR, it's still only about 350-375 lbs when fully fueled and loaded. About 200 lbs lighter than the corresponding full size rig! Should you take the Tracer? I wouldn't. Do you need a purpose built dual sport or ADV rider? Again, no...but the margins are wider with the right machinery which buys you speed, safety, and a piece of mind. Of course, I still love sport touring...but there's something about being in the wild away from people!
  22. Figured I’d chime in officially as I’ve been a long time lurker. Finally picked up a ‘17 FJ-09 this week. Was back and forth on a 19+ model but ended up finding a nicely set up first gen for a great price. Anyway, been riding for 17 years, and have owned even more bikes. Currently have a WR250R and a Sur Ron Ultra Bee in the garage next to the -09 for those other types of riding. My first Yamaha was a ‘14 FZ-09, but also owned a FZ-10, FZ-07, R7, and T700. I guess you could say I’ve circled around the Tracer for quite some time - hoping this scratches the itch for me! Anyway, looking forward to checking out what this community has to offer. Seems like there’s better engagement here than most other forums these days (thanks, Facebook).
