On my current bike, I'll probably get 12-13K out of the rear.  I'm at 11K now with about 4/32 left in the center tread area.

I need to ride behind 1 of these folks that get 12-13K out of a rear tire. Maybe because daboo is in Seattle and it's wet and the tires/Pavement is cooler most of the year makes a difference. And here I am in Louisiana, riding in 90 degree plus days almost half my year. Our roads are mostly chip rock over tar which eats up tires too. daboo might have more asphalt roads or cement. I'm changing a rear Dunlop Roadsmart II at 2330 miles because I'm not sure it will make the 1600 to 2000 mile trip I did in early April. At 2330 miles it's a little past halfway gone and getting flat across the center. I was hoping with a lighter lower HP bike I'd get better mileage out of my rears but I think my riding style just eats 'em up. My friends and I call it Spirited Riding. Usually nothing over 100, that's the cut-off. Mostly twisty roads with 25 up to 45 MPH curves that you can almost double the MPH sign for that corner.  Just having fun and using about 3/4s of your skill so you always have that extra if you need it. I didn't think at first it was the riding style. I had a ZX11 Ninja and a ZRX1100 with ZX11 Cams my nephew put in for me. Both those bikes got 2,800 to 3,200 miles. 3,200 miles was cord hanging out. Well come to think of it I am getting better mileage! I hope to get 4,000 out a rear tire now. I was also thinking of the new Michelin 5s. Would be nice to find a tire that gets me 5 to 6 thousand miles, that's a riding season for me. Have to look into Angel GTs too. Keep up the replies folks!

  2. All my Yamaha VMaxes, 3 of them, '94, '95, 99' made that sound/noise/feeling. Even after taking the front triple tree apart, regreased the bearings and tightened to correct specs. to get rid of the VMax headshake. Never had the noise or feeling on my ZRX1100 or ZX11D Ninja. Not sure if it's a Yamaha thing or if it's just the bearing setup in the bikes that make the noise. My 2015 FJ09 doesn't do it and it's a Yamaha. At least I don't think it does. Never felt/heard it. Don't have the headshake on my FJ09 but I took off the handguards right after getting it. reflashed it last year on a holiday for a better deal but never had the weave or headshake in triple digits after the reflash. From what I've experienced with my bikes and the comments here I'd say your OK. Even tho I have the 1st version of the FJ09 I'm very happy with the bike. Does what I want it to in a nice light package with plenty of performance. I am getting a few of the standard things found on the GT like slipper clutch and cruise. I already put the heated grips on and love them.

Just ordered this last night. Long wait for it to ship, but looking forward to it.

    It does work as advertised. Little to no vibration and the ball is a hard rubber so the RAM mount stays put. I use a waterproof GPS case with a sun visor on it. Got it here;

Tried to post a pic but it's too big. Not into getting the software to shrink pix. download, setup, blah, blah, blah. Have ridden in sprinkles so far to test waterproofness. No downpours yet. I usually put the GPS, Radar Detector away if and that's if we decide to ride thru a downpour or thunderstorm.

  5. Stand back and admire your handywork before covering the bike up again because you can't go out and ride it because it's -20 degrees Celsius outside. 😱

That was my question......And now how has the ride changed?  I understand your turmoil, I'm 60 and if it's less than 60 degrees I don't pull the bike out. Remember when I used to ride to work in the upper 30's to low 40's.......oh the humanity!!!!! When you get a chance to put a leg over the bike, write us a line. I'll probably have already bought the shock by then, a couple of weeks, but I'm pretty sure the report will be good.

I think the Tracer is very apt in sport riding and have no problem scraping the pegs on the Tracer. I believe in terms of sport touring the Tracer is more focused on the Sport front than Touring.

While an MT-10 Tracer GT "sounds" intriguing, every review I have read on the bike report quite poor fuel range.  No-go for sport touring.  😪

Betoney, I hear you and I love my 200 mile range on the FJ. That being said.......I'm an ole VMax guy and a longtime member of the VMOA. I rode Gen 1 VMaxes, owned 3 of them and wasn't a big Gen 2 fan. On gen 1 VMaxes you got 127 miles out of a tank. And a Member John Furber made rear ends with Venture gearing. They got 165 miles out of a tank and only dropped the RPMs by 500. And on hard acceleration still yealded a long black strip all thru 2nd gear. But now I ride with quite a few Gen2 Vmxes at 3 meets a year I make. With some of their reflashes, they get 90 miles on a tank, reserve and all. Totally out at 90. But hey we've known each other for about 25 years and really enjoy the visit every year, makes it easy to make lots of gas stops. I'm in that 60-year young group now. I was riding a 1996 ZX11 Ninja before I bought the FJ09. It has a 6.5 gallon tank and got 43 miles to a gallon. I used to get gas every other time we stopped, LOL! I'm more than happy myself with 108 RWHP but those Gen2 VMaxes come out of a corner and nail it with 196 RWHP. They just zip past 150 MPH like the FJ09 zips past 90. Now that I think about it I'm pretty happy they need gas every 75 miles or so. As I get more seasoned, as in a seasoned citizen, holding focus for more than 75 miles of twisties is getting harder. 😵 I almost went with the FZ10 as we call it here when it 1st came out. Then I checked the insurance. $376.00 every 6 months...The FJ09 costs me $78.12 every 6 months.  I don't have to have 143 RWHP and 463 lbs. anymore but 5 years ago I would have. If they could put an FJ in front of it my insurance guy says FJ means touring, FZ means naked bike/hooligan. I can tell I'm almost past the point of entertaining the thought of owning a sport-touring 143 RWHP lightweight bike. A little less hooligan these days.......Still, love the light weight power to weight ratio of this FJ. It puts the sport back in sport touring.....don't tell my insurance agent, LOL!

Too cold to ride. Feels like temp was 11 degrees this morning. I have a heated jacket liner, but damn, that's just COLD!

Hey, I'm 60 and that's the temp I start to think about riding at. 60 degrees or higher these days. Any colder the bikes in the shed that is kept at 55 degrees during the winter don't move. Your talking 11 degrees????? 50 degrees down south is a non-starter, HA!

  9. Waterproof Tour Master Solution 2.0 Boots, comfy enough to walk around in if you ride with a group and they are site seeing also if you yourself like to do a little hiking down to waterfalls, etc. Plus the price is nice on them and they wear pretty well. I also get them in the wide version. I wear an 11.5 EE in New Balance. I wear a 46 Wide in these.

You can change the Lo-Med-Hi values to anything you want.  Be warned though, on the higher settings, they get HOT, like "burn-your-hand" hot.   I believe I have mine set to 3-5-7 or 4-6-8 and normally only use low, on a very rare occasion I might switch it to Medium for a short duration but have never used High.

OK betoney, Went out this morning and set the grip warmers to 3, 5 and 7 from the stock settings of 1, 5 and 10. It's still 29 outside, not in the shed where the motorcycles are, 55 in there. Once it gets to 48 today I'll warm up the bike with the grip heaters on and see what I get. It's so easy to move around in the menu area, even for the 60-year-old inside me. Sometimes he comes out....."Git off my lawn," LOL! But most of the time my 25 to 35-year-old self is in charge. But yeah it is easy and intuitive.

Went out, cranked up the bike. Ran the heated grips. Found 3 to be great for low, moved it to 6 for Med. Not enough difference between 3 and 5 so 3 then 6 then 8 for high.  Still only a high of 47 today, just don't have the will/urge to ride when it's much under 60 degress.

3 5 and 7 was what I thought. I did a search and got 1 guy at 2 3 and 4. I'll set it to 3 5 and 7 and go from there. Seems mid-level setting for each 1. Haven't tried them yet. it's mid 30's and 15 MPH with 25 MPH gusts of wind. Not riding, e en with heated grips, no sir! But I did get 2 layers of electric tape over the handlebars on the clutch side in case there was any difference in heat others had claimed. Thanks for the replies folks!!!

If you think about it, this approach seems very counter-intuitive - soapy water + adhesive = ???   But I've heard of this technique before...  How long did it take for the adhesive to fully cure, betoney?

I've e-mailed the vendor (in Scotland) of the decals I've just ordered asking him if his material is suited to this approach - I hope he says yes, for I'd like to get a better 'fit' and look than hitherto!!

    Cheers...

wordsmith, this is the same technique that is used to apply window tint  on cars and commercial buildings. I use this same technique to put vinyl stickers on my truck windows.

I do hope that this response doesn't imply that I was peeved at your having pointed out the longer pin issue, tktpplz, for although I had certainly noticed it I wasn't overly concerned until your comment opened my eyes, as they say!   I'm grateful for your observation!   If I may - does tktplz suggest 'tickets please'?   If not , it's my warped soh at play!   If so...???

Tktplz is short for Ticket Please. When I first rode the Yamaha VMax I was like a little kid at the carnival saying ticket please, ticket please because I wanted to ride the ride again, and again and again......

    Thanks for this observation, tktplz.

BTW, the OE clevis pins are a good 5mm shorter than those supplied with the new footpegs...  This has fixed it, and since I never carry a pillion the swap won't matter.

Wasn't trying to point at anything Wordsmith. Just noticed in the picture it looked too long, didn't know if it was an optical illusion of the picture or not. Glad you figured out the passenger peg clevis pins work. I have taken those off and put on R & G blanking plates for weight savings. I won't have to buy a brake peg Clevis. As I put on luggage I try to take away any weight I can. That's why I switched to this bike from my ZX11 Ninja, 462 VS. 620 Lbs.  And yes I've gone from 327 Lbs to 222 lbs myself......to save weight. I do kind of miss the feeling of the hand of God coming in behind the ole ZX and push me forward as I twist the grip. Yes the FJ has more than enough power to weight ratio but nothing feels like 150 HP on the loud twist grip, LOL!

  15. All I want to know at this point "WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO FINISH I-12 IN LOUISIANA?" they're working in a third generation of road workers here. BS!
I know, I know fz1rider. I live in NW Louisiana and it's old 2 lane, cracked up asphalt with 6 layers of chip seal over it with grass growing up in the cracks. With many of the roads by my house having no markings. No center line or white lines on the side. Just an old road that's just wide enough for it to be called 2 lanes, well sort of. We pay right at the same amount of gas taxes as Texas but somehow our tax money doesn't make it to the roads.  angry.png   Back to your situation.....I feel your pain brother!

Still wondering where the hell fz1rider had this come out of in a fenda-extenda thread???????    ;)    Guess it just had to come out and this is where it landed, LOL!

  16. This next helmet in the spring will be a Modular Bell Helmet with the transitions visor. They have the inside screen but have the option of buying a transition visor for them. The visor gets darker in the sun and if it's still too much sunlight you can use the sun visor also. Don't have to have a dark visor and a clear with you for day to night riding. Bell has 2 versions/price ranges of their Modular Helmets. For non-modular helmets, they have 1 with the transitions visor included for 249.00. Not sure on the fit or noise yet. Going to go by the local Bell Hemet dealer....Harley shop, and see how they fit. I'm a Modular HJC wearer at this time.
  17. You don't say......now that's funny! Just here to help........
The way I installed it the gate opens up and you have to hold the helmet up to keep it from slipping off while you latch the lock. Of course, it never occurred to me that I may have installed it in the wrong direction - I always thought "why did they make the lock this way?".
Don't feel bad. I had my DOH! moment a couple of weeks ago when I thought Chromebatteries sent me the right battery number but somehow the posts were reversed. Didn't realize that the battery needed to be turned 180 degrees and lay on its side. Yeah, that was me.......DOH!
