@foxtrot722 - I use the exact same method as the first 2 photos.  I have ridden many 500+ mile days while on road trips and being able to have foot placement options is a life saver for my old, damaged knees.

About a year ago I found a guy on eBay who makes standard and wide sliders, (contact him and ask for the wide) the wide version is almost an inch wider.

This set of sliders will fit on a 2014, 2015 or 2016 Yamaha FZ-09. Will also...

Excellent; thanks for this.  Been looking for ...this kind of relief, lol.  ...was wondering how sliders might feel as opposed to crash guards & highway pegs.  Not to crazy about adding crash bars to this bike.  Sliders seem like a decent alternative.

I found some adjustable rearsets too, in hopes of lowering the footpegs, but could never confirm if they will actually adjust to lower the pegs.  They seem more track-oriented, which usually = a bit higher so as not to drag in the corners.

Being able to change position, even just for a few moments - can help heaps.

EDIT:  found a link to the extended sliders:

  2. I did the same thing under nearly the same circumstances.  Not the end of the world, but an ouch for sure.

Picked up a new hand guard from a Yamaha dealer for around $40.

Ordered a replacement cover; still waiting on delivery:

Find many great new & used options and get the best deals for...

...crash bars are next, even if just for highway pegs...

EDIT: Probably should have got these, instead..oh well.

I'm shocked that you're shocked, knyte, for there has been a heap of discussion on this very point over the years, with no really good reasons being put forward, tho' plenty of opinions - including from me!   But I note that you are a new member, and you'll surely catch-up sooner or later.   Take a look at these posts:

How is such a great bike so unpopular!?

Heya, thanks, well aware of that thread.

    I can still be shocked!

    Post-winter oil change done!

I still can't believe having Yamaha ship me an oil change kit was cheaper than buying the filter and oil locally or via Amazon.  $50 for the filter, 3l of oil and a new crush washer (also gloves and funnel, actually) with free 3 day shipping.

To the Americans in the group - yeah, oil, particularly MC oil is spendy here.  Typically around $15/l.

It's a downside of winter riding - all the cold starts is pretty hard on your oil, so it's a good practice to change it moving into spring.

A side note.  Wtf is it with Yamaha and stock oil filters being absolutely CRANKED onto the bike?  Torque is supposedly 12ft-lbs for the filter, but every stock filter I've taken off has required basically total destruction of the filter in the process.  Also, 32ft-lbs for the drain bolt?  In that aluminum pan?  Eeeeeeeh.

    <snip>

Thanks for the tip, had no idea that Yamaha would do that.  And, yes, very competitive pricing.

...in a former life I was a lube tech in Calgary for a big-name company.  Oil filters do not need to be torqued on like they're holding the whole damn car/bike together!  ...frustrates me to no end when some shop over-tightens the filter, then I have to change the oil one day and need to pound a screwdriver through the filter in order to un-do it.  GR!!  All it needs is about 1/4 turn past contact with the gasket.  That's it!!  Same with the oil plug...slightly hand-tight is plenty!

    /end rant

Thanks again for the oil change kit tip :)

And what did I add to my FJ-09 ?  Chain/sprockets - then some bugs from Edmonton to Red Deer and back.  Fantastic weekend for a ride down HWY 21.

They look to be nice quality bags. I bought them from revzilla. Should be nice for motel stays while traveling

    Yeah, they're pretty good!

As a follow up, here is what the old bags are looking like, vs the new.  New = rubberized interior and what appears to be water resistant zippers and generally heavier material.  The new seams appear to be constructed similarly as the old - not sure if it's visible in the photos of the old, but I did try to have them repaired - but they just frayed again.  The old bags are nearly threadbare, and have not aged well at all.  The new ones just feel far more substantial.  Yes, they are a bit bigger, but if your touring bags have Rok straps or something, it's no big deal at all to cinch them up, and the lid closes fine.  I like that they came with shoulder straps, too...might be handy lugging them in to work and whatnot.

    Old:

    Really bad seams:

Shot from the inside - pretty much toast, lots of thinned-out material:

New - seams are similar, hope they hold up better over time:

bought some FJR inner bags for my 17 FJ-09 factory FJ luggage

lol and here I am, trying to find FJR liners for my FJR bags for use on my FJ-09!!  I have a pair of Yamaha liners, but the fabric keeps tearing away from the side piping on the 'lid'.  It just begins to fray away from the seam, and there's no stopping it.

    These seem highly rated...ordered.

Thinking more about this topic, I have a view that one of the reasons why buyers - at least here in Oz - shunned the bike from day one was the ghastly North Atlantic Shipping Container Grey paintwork on the first editions of the Tracer.   Worse, it was a matte finish, and looked so drab and - well - grey that it tended to induce suicidal thoughts in onlookers!   The later iterations and GTs have moved ahead considerably in this regard, but first impressions tend to linger...

I have to agree in that the 2015 - to what, 2018 ?  ...had the candy red option, which really pops compared to later colour scheme offerings.  Truthfully, it's what caught my eye in the dealership.  After sitting on it a few times - well, I mean, I'm here now :)
