That is very surprising to hear, I read several motorcycle forums, FJ/Tracer/FZ/MT/XSR, FZ/MT10 and FJR and have never heard anything but praise for their product and service.  Not defending them, just seems out of character.

Well, to quantify that statement, I ordered fork bushings along with the rest of the suspension stuff I got (ktech brand through NorWest). Installed the Stoltec cartridge and new oem seals, went for a test ride, and found the forks to be leaking through the seals. I’ve done dozens and use all the correct tools, never had one leak on me. Upon disassembly, I found out the lower fork bushing was 1mm too small on OD. Had to send a bunch of measurements and pictures, at which point they admitted they incorrectly listed the bushing. They sent me new ones, but wouldn’t cover the measly $50 for oil and new seals because “it should have been caught during assembly.” Not to mention the time to redo the job, diagnose the issue, two weeks of downtime, etc... I didn’t get too fired up about it, I just went on with the reassembly. The new bushings seemed to be the right measurements, but the gap wouldn’t allow it to pinch closed enough to fit in the fork tube. Again had to go through the process of double checking, measuring, even went so far as to machine a “ring compressor” style install tool to make sure I wasn’t just being a knucklehead. Using a piston ring gapper, I opened the gap quite liberally and eventually got it to fit properly, but at that point I wasn’t very confident in the quality of the bushings. I opted to use oem parts.

I get that mistakes happen, and supplier quality varies. I was pretty surprised that they put up any resistance to covering my materials cost for the rebuild, considering I could have seriously damaged my forks, and considering I just spent a wad on the shock. I’m not trying to bash them, but figured I may as well explain my experience. So take that for what it’s worth. And do yourself a favor, stick with oem or skf for consumables.

Funny thing about the K-tech. I talked to them in regards to what spring I should have for the rear. They recommended a 93nm spring but when I talked to a suspension guy he said that was way too light for my riding purposes and recommended I go to something higher. Any ideas @betoney or other suspension gurus? I'm buying the Razor-R off of a forum member and it currently has a 105nm spring on it which, per K Tech sales rep would be too heavy.

I bought a shock from KTech with their recommended spring rate. When my race sag was set correctly, I had 0 static sag, which indicates a too-light spring. I left it alone because I ran into several other problems with KTech, didn't want to deal with the headache and lack of help, and intend to lose some weight anyway. I would recommend using race tech's calculator. I'll bet it's a couple rates stiffer. Maybe split the difference between them?

@Maverick302 Some good reading in here (https://www.tracer900.net/topic/6975-screen-for-tall-rider/#comments) where I've posted before, but to answer your question,  I have the Yamaha Touring Screen (24"?) and the Ermax 20" screen... both are terrible for wind buffeting at highway speed.

Popular option is the Madstad 26" - https://madstad.com/products/yamaha-tracer-900-2019?variant=19992266670193

I did have someone mention to me that the Parabellum is the tallest/biggest you can find (http://parabellum.com/FJ-09-Replacement-Touring-Windshield-P124.aspx) also at 26", but I haven't gambled on it as I'm up in Canada. The only people I've chatted with personally who used the above 2 are all shorter than me, so it doesn't really help :P

Thanks. Madstad is at the top of my list.

I'm 6'3" with a 36" inseam. I have the sw-motech crash bars and they serve as perfect leg-resters on those highway trips. I also have cruise control through my ECU... using that in combination with a pillion bag means I can set the CC, put my legs up and actually lean back a bit onto my bag. Very comfy.

The one issue is I have not found a windshield that gives me clean air; it all ends in buffeting. I got fed up, made my own little fly shield and pretty much ride the bike naked. Its a bit tiring, but I came from a naked bike so I'm kind of used to it. I can do 2-3 hours on the bike pretty easily without needing to stop.

@Husqy - what shields have you tried? I'm 6'4 and on the verge of getting a barn door of some sort, but keep hearing people say they haven't found anything that helps.

  5. Both are great helmets, with the Shoei being slightly more "premium," with the price tag to match. I recently tried both models, as well as Arai, AGV, Scorpion, and Shoei's RF line. When I put the GT air 2 on, I knew immediately the fit was right. That and the Neotec 2 fit about the same, but I have no real interest/need for a modular. I walked in hoping the RF would fit me, since I've really become attached to the photochromic shield, but like I said, once the GT air went on, I was sold. The HJC did fit, as did the other Shoei's, but the GT hugged my noggin just right. I'm sure I'll be able to live with the flip down sun visor as opposed to the leave-it-alone-and-it's-always-perfect photochromic.

Point being, fit is going to be paramount, and features second.

  6. This is great feedback, and much appreciated. Luckily the bike I bought came with a short screen that I can try out (been cold/icy lately), but I think I've been convinced to try out a big screen. I'm thinking Madstad, because it's so adjustable, but I've heard great things about the Givi's and Calsci as well. Anyone near my height (6'4) have any experience with these?
